This Wood Door Trimmer didn't save me time or effort and won't be used again.
This tool has such promise. Use this trimmer tool with your existing power drill to shave the edges of sticking doors without even having to take the door off its hinges! If only it worked that way… Let me back up a bit and say that I am rehabbing a recently purchased vacation home. Over the colder winter months, I did mostly indoor work, including adjusting doors and painting doors, walls, and ceiling afterwards. Now it’s summer -- the heat and humidity have caused some previously fitting doors to stick and require some additional adjustment. The Ryobi Wood Door Trimmer arrived just in time to help me with this project. Preparation is simple. Just place the trimmer’s protruding spindle into the chuck of a power drill and tighten, then adjust the trimmer width guides to accommodate the door thickness. Because my offending door edge was the latch side, I also needed to remove the entirety of the doorknob and latch assembly. Power up the drill to its highest speed and with one hand holding the drill and one on a T-handle on the back of the door trimmer, push it along the door edge to be trimmed. This is where the problems began. I needed a third (or a fourth) hand to hold the door steady. Working vertically along the door edge with just one hand on the back of the tool, I couldn’t apply enough pressure, and the cutting bit bounced along, leaving uneven gouges in the surface. With the door still on its hinges, the tool couldn’t reach the two inches of door edge nearest the floor. The drill chuck loosened twice – though I didn’t have that problem when I later tried the trimmer with a corded drill that employed a chuck key. Despite my best efforts, the edge guides also opened up and allowed the tool to be something other than perpendicular to the work surface. I pulled the door from its hinges to work horizontally (and get the bottom edge of the door) and got marginally better, but still not satisfactory, results. The edge guide also left black marks on the white painted slab surface of the door. Those marks couldn’t be removed with a Magic eraser, so I needed to then repaint the entire door. (Fortunately, it was already off its hinges and stripped of hardware at this point.) The instructions indicate that it may be necessary to do follow-up sanding on the trimmed surface. In fact, I needed a belt sander with 80 grit sandpaper to work through the uneven gouges this tool left on the door edge. The manufacturer specifies that this tool is for wooden doors – obviously not for metal nor fiberglass – and these doors had a composite Masonite core that may have skewed my results for the worse. I also wondered if I was using the tool incorrectly, so double checked the instructions and tried using it in the opposite direction, but got similarly bad results. Ryobi makes some terrific tools, but I don’t think this is one of them. When I was ready to take on the subsequent two doors, I took them down and went back to using a hand plane, getting better results with less time and effort.

Clever device
The RYOBI Wood Door Trimmer is the perfect solution for fixing sticking doors in a hurry. If longer hinge anchors won't cure it, then this should be your go-to. This clever device acts like n electric hand planer but requires only a standard drill, to shave off excess material along the edge of the door. It uses a captive multi-flute edge mill to remove material within the jaws with each pass. The tool can be adjusted to work on 1-3/4 in. & 1-3/8 in. size doors. This tool makes a sticking door an easy fix if the standard fixes fail you. Keep in mind though, that once material is gone, it's gone. If you do re-anchor the door later, you will now have a gap where you shaved material off.

It worked but...
I needed to trim off a section of the bottom of a door to allow clearance for a small area rug. I practiced on a 2 x 4 to get a ‘feel’ for how the planer bit cuts into the wood. I found that moving the trimmer along somewhat quickly while applying firm downward pressure worked best for me. If you find the trimmer gouging into the wood, trim in the other direction. My door is just over 1-1/2 inches thick (not the standard 1-3/8 or 1-3/4 size) this had no ill effect on the operation of the tool. As some reviewers have pointed out, there are other means of accomplishing what this tool can do. e.g. electric sander or a hand plane. For me, the Ryobi door trimmer provided an easy solution for the job at hand. Bottom line is that it worked but the tool is limited in scope to trimming doors. At roughly the same cost, a hand plane may prove a more versatile tool.

One of the smartest tools available
The Ryobi Wood door trimmer is a quick and easy solution to an annoying door that sticks. We had that problem in a bathroom caused by humidity changes. I've always has trouble trimming doors, even after taking the door off. The Ryobi Wood Door Trimmers puts an end to chisels and planers. This handy dandy tool attaches to your drill allowing you to skim a little or as much as you need off the door. It works on standard 3/4" and 3/8" doors. It removes up to 1/32" per pass. And most of all, you won't have to remove the door. It worked great and solved the problem. Brilliant job Ryobi. I recommend it.

Handy and easy to use
The RYOBI Wood Door Trimmer is a great solution if you're hanging doors, or if your current doors stick. The trimmer uses a standard drill with a 3/8” diameter chuck and takes off about 1/32 inch with each pass. With this tool, the doors can be trimmed without taking the door off the hinges. Like any new tool, it takes a little practice to get it to move smoothly and apply the correct pressure. It fits on wood doors from 1 3/8 inch to 1 ¾ inch. The Trimmer is compact and fits easily in your hand. If your door sticks close to the bottom of the door, the door may have to be removed to trim it because the trimming part of this tool is in the middle leaving a margin of more than an inch. I also found that the surface after trimming is rough and could use a quick sanding.

Useful tool
The old method was to take the door off the hinges and use a planer and hope that you get it right. This useful tool allows you to keep the door in place. Using a drill and this device allows to keep the door in place, with a lot less effort. The drill takes a lot of the muscle out the job and with more detail. We shouldn't in the real world worry about wooden doors jamming in the frame, but this is definitely makes it easier when you need to address it.

door trimmer/shaver
Nice little idea to trim down door edges. Has a shaver bit installed and you hook up a drill to the 3/8 inch shaft. as you PUSH away with right hand you operate the drill at full speed and go along the door. It trims one 32nd off with each pass, so nice tool to slowly shave a door down and check for fit after each pass. The drill shaft is round so need to use in a drill with a chuck. It does work but I would suggest practice first on a junk board as I did to get the right feel of moving along the door jamb or edge.

A lifesaver- practice first though
This is such a blessing. We've rehung doors around our house with new hardware. They were snug to begin with, and several are now slightly off and will not close. This allowed me to trim the problem area so they would. My one negative would be the learning curve. It takes a minute to figure out how to move it & apply pressure, so you get some noticeable divots as you go. :(

This well-designed and substantial plastic Ryobi Wood Door Trimmer adjusts for doors from 1 1/4" thick to 1 3/4" thick. The adjustment is very precise and is accomplished by jiggling the device handle left-to-right, a notch at a time. The shank that fits a drill is 3/8" diameter. Each pass of the trimmer takes off about 1/32" wood. The device is roughly 3" x 4" overall and has a 3 1/4" comfortable handle.

Sticking doors are one of the tasks that many of us ignore because of the perception of difficulty of fixing the issue. The Ryobi door trimmer is an excellent answer to this problem. I was able to correct the issues with two doors within fifteen minutes including the sanding of the roughness left after use of this trimmer. The trimmer will not go all the way to the floor while the door is hanging. If the door sticks at the bottom you may need to remove the door from the hinges.
