Will this type of cap cause water to be left in the system after winterizing? Blind hole?

Asked by Hefe August 14, 2020

Thanks for your question. The answer is yes, depending on your system layout and location of the sealed caps. Picture the case of a zone on sloped ground, with the water supply from the irrigation valve feeding the highest point on the slope and the zone dead-ending on the lowest point. The pressurized air winterizing tries to blow out the water through the spray heads. The water from the point of the last spray head to the end of the zone will have trapped water that might freeze, depending on your climate. Removing the cap during winterizing and replacing afterwards will avoid this potential problem.

You'd have to check the diameter. But the insides need to be removed on the 1800 series pop ups. Ask your Rain Bird dealer.

Does this cap screw on top of the entire sprinkler body head or does it replace the nozzle?

When you install this cap you remove the popup mechanism, spring, head, etc, you wind up screwing the cap down on an empty shell/housing

Precisely what I needed. Easy to install, works with all my 1800 series heads. Certainly a much better alternative to digging up nozzle, installing taller riser, then capping off with PVC cap. Which in retrospect, is a silly method of capping off a sprinkler head.

After replacing some parts of my yard to rocks, I needed some sprinkler heads to stop watering. 3 of them propped up and splashed water all over the place. Two didn't pop but leaked. I'm sure some of them are 1800 series but some others might not be different (I don't know because I inherited from the previous house owner). I could use the caps by buying and replacing old sprinkler with the 1800 series bodies but I rather replaced with risers and PVC caps instead.

While the concept is good, the design of the cap is not. The first try to fasten leaked. Had to wrap teflon thread-wrap on the very limited thread area of the sprinkler head, then gently tighten the cap with slack jawed grip pliers, while holding the sprinkler body from turning (after having to dig to open access to the sprinkler body). Eventually it worked. It would have been less time consuming and effective to simply cap-off the riser.
