    Gravel in mortar?
I bought this to parge the side of a concrete wall because it is advertised as a good application for this product. As soon as I opened the bag I could see gravel/pea stones up to 3/4" all through the mix. I went through half the bag to see how bad it was and the gravel was all through the mix. I tried to sift the gravel out but there were way too many and the sand grit was course and larger. Repair mortar should have fine plaster sand to be used for tuck pointing or plastering, not this stuff. TERRIBLE product. Lost a day of work dealing with this trash. Checked another bag at the store during the return. Same garbage. HD doesn't sell stucco or parge mix in our area. Unless you custom mix your own, use Quikrete Type S mortar mix over bonding slurry. Much finer sand and no gravel. Quikrete Repair Mortar with polymer was actually better, but it only comes in caulk tubes now, what a shame. Sadly, this is what "Made In America" has become. No pride in your work. HD did accept the return with no problem.

When I'm leveling up an Industrial machine up on shims and have it bolted onto the Floor, this is what I use to fill in gaps under and around. In the one picture, you can see a little blue. That's from being run into by a CHEP Blue Pallet. It didn't break YET. I had just fixed it as they broke it up about half of that. People like to run into things. This is the second time I've had to fix that one. To get a smooth look, you wet your Metal 3-4" wide knife. Puddy knife or drywall knife. Dip in water and run across. If you want more of a ruff look with the small bits of rock, you and wipe and dap with a sponge. Mine is the smooth look in the picture. The less water you use, the stronger it's going to be. It has to be wet and mixed wet good, but it can't be thin and runny. Just enough so it's all wet, and there is no dry mix left. A little water goes a long way. It is Rapid Set and so you have to use it pretty quickly before it starts drying. Then it's to hard to work with. So you can only do small sections at a time. In my case, mix enough for 1 or 2 Legs. You have maybe 15 minutes to work!!!

I used rapid Set Mortar Mix to make 3" thick step treads. Each tread was 4.5 bags of Rapid Set Mortar Mix. I used the Rapid Set Flow control and Set Control for a perfect consistency and to give more time before it set up. The result was very few voids.

This is a excellent material to use for our stomwater system work. It will stick to concrete and brick and stay in place. Although the cost for the material is higher, your wait time to setup and cost for labor time decreases then the regular, cheaper mortar mix.

      Stone Wall Mortar
Used the mortar to build a stone wall . Attached the mortar to concrete cinder blocks and then attached field stones to the wall and mortar . Used a common trowel bought at Home Depot to work the mortar into cracks . Bought from Home Depot a mixer and an orange pail Mixed small portion at a time as the rocks need to set before adding more stones . The set up time was quick. Was very happy with the product

A co-worker mentioned to check out Michael Builds on YouTube for making concrete countertops. It looked too good to be true, but wow I made my first countertop this weekend and it worked great. Everyone that is making concrete countertops should look into using this. Add the flow control and it pours like pancake mix. I am going to have a pretty sweet looking bar when this project is done. I still need to install the first one in the bar. Will update images once I get the other 2 made and get them installed.

I read thru a couple of glowing reviews on this product, but I did not have a good experience with it. I read in the product description it sets up in 15 minutes; in my case I would say two to three minutes. I mixed up a small batch in a little bread pan & could only use about a third of it before it set up to a point it was unworkable. The consistency out of the box was very gritty, more like small gravel. I wouldn't call it mortar! Possibly this box was sitting on the shelf for years & absorbed moisture ??????

I used this rapid set mortar mix to make a concrete bar top.. I had a bid for almost $2,000 for just one large bar top, and that just wasn't in my budget... So, I ended up online, doing research, and found I could make my own bar top, back bar top, and counter top for a sink at a HUGE SAVINGS using Rapid Set Mortar Mix (and flow control)

Being kind of sloppy and impatient Rapid Set mortar mix fits my work style. I used the mortar to repair the sides and sill of a basement window. It hardens quickly and I was able to put in a new 70 lb glass block window about 1 hour after fixing the old basement window sill. Yes it costs more but I didn't have to wait an extra day to finish the project. Yes I would use this mortar mix again.

first time working with mortar - not a bad experience
Before I go into my experience with this product, I’m going to suggest that if you haven’t worked with something like this before (as was my case) you go watch a video like the one I’m going to link to, just so you have an idea of what the consistency of the mortar mix should look like for your desired application. There’s lots of links out there, but the one I found (and reference below) was done by a representative of RapidSet: So, as you can see from the pictures, I had a couple of holes in my basement: a small one at the juncture of 2 walls and the floor, and another where the wall, floor, and stairs meet. You can’t tell from the pics, but the larger hole also extended a little under the bottom stair. The mortar mix was pretty easy to work with. Obviously i used goggles and a face mask, to avoid getting the dust in eyes or mouth. And the drill mixer was key, especially as the mix got thicker. I initially started to try and measure based on the water:mix formula on the bag, but realized that the consistency was more important, so i just added more mix until it looked and felt right (going by what the video showed). And working with the mixed product was no chore. I double-gloved with nitrile gloves, hand scooped it into the holes and packed it in, then smoothed it with a small trowel. Since it’s a basement that doesn’t look so spiffy otherwise, i wasn’t too worried about a finished look, hence the slightly rough look in the “finished” picture”. Also, the after pic was taken about 24 hours after the “after” picture. I know there’s some part of that that looks still damp, but its not. The whole thing is rock hard and dry. Also, the Installation Guide and Specification docs that are available on the product overview tab for this product are much easier to read over than trying to read the back of a 55# bag of mortar :-) If you’re someone like me that is not intimately familiar working with this stuff, a thorough read of the spec sheet was key. So, yeah, all in all a good experience.

Smooth, Easy to Work With, Dries Fast
This mortar is smooth, easy to work with and dries fast. I needed to re-mortar the lion to the pillar. The moss/mold had eaten away at the mortar (30+years) and the lion stayed there because of sheer weight. Any one who gave it a shove could have made Humpty Dumpty out of him. He is now secure on his pillar hopefully for another 30+ years.

            BEST MORTAR EVER MADE!
Trying to save a deteriorating cellar foundation wall from the early 1940's. The walls were power washed and had/have areas that have lost 2" to nothing over the years from water and plain lack of maintenance. I purchased a couple 55 lb bags and started repairing the cracks and loose areas that required mortar repair prior to parging. That time consuming task did cause me to loose 3/4's of the first bag. Then I re-read the instructions and went and purchased the "SET CONTROL" packs and used one per 55 lb bag. Then two per bag. You must add it to the water BEFORE you add the mortar. Once I got the directions correct it went on like butter and I have since used 25 - 55lb bags and almost 50 of the Set control packs. Let me tell you, there is nothing out there that works like this. The walls are like steel and I am showing a few tradesmen the difference between this and just using standard S or N type mortar for walls in this condition. I have also replaced 1 pint of the water with 1 pint of concrete latex bonder and sprayed the wall prior to applying the mortar with bonder following the manufacturers directions for that as well. Finished well with spraying with light water and using a mag float but you must be appreciative of the set time. See the before and after pics of two of the walls we are working on.
