Are these effective against mice? The larger version is not.

This product is recommended for rats.

can I use the rat zapper outdoors in a protected area...a shady dry area off the ground on a tile

For the trap’s sake, as long as it stays dry, it should be fine. However, for wildlife’s sake, PLEASE turn off first thing in the morning! (I failed to warn a friend and the first day she used it, it killed a bird, blue jay, I believe.)

I know it says Indoor, but can these be used outdoor at all? Like under a sheltered space?

Thousands of volts. It will draw an arc 3/4" to 1"

Can this be used over and over again or are they one time traps?

Yes, until the batteries are lower. They claim 20 times before you have to put new batteries in. The unit will tell you the batteries are low when you turn it on.

I'd prefer not to kill squirrels outside. Any ideas how that could be done?

Not sure what you are trying to do. Mice? Rats? I would think that you could simply attach, in a variety of ways, a 'mouse hole' sized plastic cover that would only allow smaller sized rodents to enter the rat trap. Depends on how close in size your targeted critter is to your typical cute squirrels. We have both where I am and reducing the size of the opening should work, although I haven't tried it (or caught any squirrels yet).

What kind and how many batteries does this require ????

The device takes 4 'AA' batteries. That's double A. When you use Lithium 'AA' batteries you will get more 'zaps' per set of batteries. You can get 4 alkaline 'AA' batteries for about a dollar at the 'dollar' type stores where I am. I read the Lithium (more expensive by far) last about 30 zaps, while the alkaline battery sets give 20 zaps.

what size lithium batteries

We just used standard AA batteries that came in a 16 pack. Is the upgrade in batteries worth it? Our opinion probably not, but if it is difficult to check the trap daily, but you should, as decomposition occurs quite quickly, then the pricier batteries might help. But with the "flipping" the top power button, it gives you a visual indication whether the batteries are or are not up to snuff.

Hello, what is the little black stopper in the hole on the top for? Thanks, D

Don't know what you are talking about, there is a switch to turn on and off the power to the plate that shocks the rats on top of the unit.

Easy to use. I used garden gloves during the process of unpacking the trap, adding the batteries and food, and placing the trap appropriately. There is a long metal plate at the front that surrounds a smaller plate near the covered rear grate. When you turn the device on the bright red LED on top shines brightly for a moment then dims to nothing, waiting for a visitor. If you see the LED blinking slowly you can assume something tripped a high voltage discharge. I got this because I saw a huge rat going after the few remaining dog food pellets in our dog Daisy's dish, and I didn't want to use regular snap traps because they are such a nasty hassle. I placed the Rat Zapper where I saw the rat come from. I dropped 2 small pellets of food to the back of the trap and a couple more outside the trap near the opening. I turned the trap on. When I checked about 20 minutes later the light was blinking slowly. Hmmm. Yup. Gloves. Big rat in box. Turn switch off. Carry box to big green trash pickup can. Dump rat. Noticed a drop of pee, otherwise the trap was clean. Wipe pee with paper towel. Repeat process. 20 minutes later? Junior visits the trap. No pee this time, just dump the mouse. See the picture!

Better than most typical traps
I have(had) a few chipmunks living under my back and front porches and expanded their territory to under my backyard shed. I pre-baited this trap with dried corn and gave the critters a fee meal for the first day. After that I armed the trap and in two days I had caught 3 of chipmunks. I'll probably get another of these to use in garage during the winter when the mice move in from the cold. Great product and easy to use. Just be aware that it is not waterproof and will need to be protected from the rain if used outdoors.

Love this!! No mess easy kill. I placed it on the top cross rail of my fence. Killed and easily disposed of 8 rats in 5 days. No poison to worry about - I have several dogs plus didn’t have to deal with the anguish of rats caught in the old type traps that weren’t killed and screaming!!
