Questions & Answers

What does it mean to “charge” the biochar? Is it necessary and how do you do it?

Answer This Question

Many in depth videos on YouTube. Very educational.

To charge biochar, you "inoculate" its porous structure with nutrients and microbes by soaking or mixing it with rich organic materials like compost, worm castings, manure tea, urine, or liquid fertilizers for a few days to weeks, preventing it from pulling nutrients from the soil initially and turning it into a slow-release fertilizer

I ordered and received 5 - 22 lb bags. The size of each bag is roughly 16" by 16" by 6". I would say these bags are about 1 cubic foot or maybe a little more.

I am ready to buy. Too bad you don't specify is this 100% biochar or mixed w/compost or soil? Is it raw/empty biochar or filled with microbes. Your prices are great, esp. since HD is out of Wakefield. But you won't keep selling if you don't givesome specs

I’m really impressed with the quality of this biochar. The texture is finely crumbled but still has visible structure—perfect for mixing into soil without creating dust clouds. The carbonization looks thorough, with a deep black sheen that tells me it was fired at a good temperature. When I moistened it, it absorbed water evenly and held it without turning muddy.

Great consistency bio char.. long lasting
                    by
Exactly as described, good quality, nice granular size. This was the best pricing found per pound, 22 pound bag. Shipped in thick polyethylene plastic within a regular shipping bag, foot high, 8/12 inches deep. Will be "charging" this biochar with compost juice, etc. before use with the rest of Gary's Toppot soil recipe. So far, excellent all around.

for my use, this is exactly what I need. Rather than soil amendment, this is used for a composting toilet which requires biochar for breakdown of organic material. The granular texture makes this product perfect for this use.
