Hi, we've had a tv on ours for close to three years and there's been no issue. The fireplace doesn't heat up the top of the unit (where the tv is).
It is not a screen. There are 3 dimensional logs in the box. The flames are created with different lights.
The mantel surrounding the firebox has to be assembled. Email CSRep@realflame.com if you would like a copy of the assembly instructions.
