I there a maximum distance the transfer switch can be placed from the main circuit panel? Due to my room design, I need to place mine approximately 25ft. away. Will that require up-sizing the wire connecting the transfer switch to the main panel? Can anyone suggest an alternative?
Asked by: Radman
This will void the UL listing and will not pass an electrical inspection. You may get away with it but it is not permissible. You must not rewire or try to lengthen the factory pigtail between the switch and the main panel. If you need to add length once the individual conductors have entered the breaker panel, that is permissible. There are limits in the NEC as to how many current carrying conductors may be run inside a single raceway for a given distance. This is has to do with being able to dissipate the heat of bundled wires. Just because the manufacturer got a UL listing for their bundle, this does not mean that it is OK to extend it to fit your needs. They come that length for a reason. If you don't believe me, ask your local inspector.

I have a Black Max 7000 watt (8750 surge) generator. It has a single 240 V 30amp outlet and 8 120V 20amp. outlets. Each 120 V outlet is GFCI protected. Will this transfer switch work with GFCI protected circuits? Will it require any modifications?
Asked by: Radman
If you mean you have gfci circuits in your main panel then yes it will work with them.

This transfer switch, plug, 10' 220 line came neatly packaged in one box - everything needed is included and it's is pre-wired, and easy to install. It took me about three hours to hang the switch on the wall near the breaker box and get it wired - it is a heavy box, so I used a piece of plywood secured to the wall and then attached the switch to the plywood - it's rock solid and doesn't look bad (didn't feel like dealing with the flush mounting option). Take time to decide which breakers you want to wire beforehand as it will save you a lot of time and energy during the installation. I did have an electrician take a look at it to make sure it was installed correctly and test it with me. The only real negative I encountered was that the flexible housing tube is too short (11") and as a result, if you don't purchase a long flexible housing then you have to mount the switch very close to the breaker which can be inconvenient. Overall, very happy with the product and with Home Depot's on-line experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install After purchasing my house the first thing I did was to setup my electrical system in case of power outages. I got estimates from local electricians and it was between $900 and $1100. After reading several other reviews stating how easy it was to install I decided to purchase it and give it a try. The most important part is the planning, I took the time to out through each circuit to determine the load (the supplied work sheet helps with this) then created an excel spreadsheet that stated each circuit number on the main pannel to the circuit letter on the transfer switch along with the load and location. Using tape I then assigned each letter to the actuall circuit. Once that was done, making the connections was quick and easy. Took less than an hour, and I checked each wire 2 or more times to be safe. I was quickly able to test the generator on the system and it worked flawlessly. This weekend SANDY came roaring in and I was able to setup the generator in just minutes and waited it out knowing my family would be safe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This transfer switch is easy to install This switch is easy to install and provides 10 circuits of electric power when the primary electric power fails. It took about 3 hours to run 100' of 8 gauge cable from the garage to the main power panel and wire the input plug and the 10 circuits to the main panel. The wire pairs were well marked and the directions were clear. Everything worked like it was supposed to when I started the generator and plugged it into the transfer switch. I don't have to worry if the main breakers are off or not. The transfer switches are double throw switches - they have generator, off and Transfer positions -no way to make a mistake. The 10' power cord is a little short - I had to make a 20' cord to get the portable generator away from the house. I'm running a 8,000 watt generator so I have enough power to run the 10 most important circuits. I have 27 circuits in total, so it took a little planning to determine which ones to wire into the transfer system.

I would have rated this switch as Five Stars/Excellent - IF the documentation in the box had been complete, but it was not. After getting onto the company's website, I found the documentation there that contained the information I needed to do the installation w/o having to guess at some of the items. The product is well engineered and manufactured. After getting the information I needed of the company's website, the installation went well. I do recommend this company's products, but their documentation needs work.

I bought this transfer switch after hearing about all of the horror stories about people losing power for more than a week because of hurricane Irma. I was one of the lucky ones that never lost power due to the storm but I realized that even though I was ready with a backup generator I was not fully ready for a long term power outage. I also wanted something that would be easy for my wife to use while I was away at work during an outage. This unit was just what I was looking for. I have all of the most necessary circuits wired into it. My refrigerator, water heater. pool pump. security system, computers and modem, Television and cable box circuits. These are now ready to use with just the flip of a switch and they are running. Another added bonus of this switch is that by not having to turn off the main power breaker to the house I will be able to tell immediately when the main power has been restored. It was very easy to install and I was able to do the install all by myself. I highly recommend this transfer switch for anyone that is looking for an easy, economical, way to be ready for a long term power outage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ready for the next Power Outage. So it turns out I had to wait a while (like a good majority of you, after Sandy) to get a hold of this device. I ordered a 10-circuit kit (for a 8000W generator) and a transfer switch by itself for a 10kW unit. First I mounted the unit on a plywood panel (relatively easy to do) and then I did all the wiring myself. I have never done any electrical installation myself, so that being said, the accompanying installation info, and the DVD was a great help. Also, there are other detailed installation videos on YouTube which can be referred to. A few pics of the 8000W unit installation is included herein. After installation, I had an electrician look at the installation and certified that it was done correctly. I highly recommend this product for the quality, and price.

The directions are very clear and straight forward. This is definitely something a homeowner can install in an afternoon. It's pretty basic, turn off the breaker you want to put on the transfer switch, remove the wire from the breaker, connect the red wire to the breaker, wire nut the black wire from the switch and the wire removed from the breaker together. Repeat 9x. The hardest part will probably be mounting it if you're putting it next to a load center in a finished area. Mine is in my utility room so I just hung it next to the panel and was completely done with the install in about 3 hours. You'll need to pick up some AWG 10/3 romex cable to connect to the remote box and a panel knockout cable clamp for the transfer switch. My only gripe about the product is that the remote box housing has a lip on the back of it that makes a completely flush mount to the exterior almost impossible.

I removed bars so I had all 10 circuits since I did not need the double poles. You do need a magnifier glass if your eyesight is like mine to be able to see the lettering on the black and red wires to match them up. Everything went well to install.
