Product Overview

This 10-circuit, 30 Amp manual transfer switch kit includes everything needed to make a professional transfer switch installation in a home, office, or small business. It is completely pre-wired and designed for fast installation. The transfer switch enables the electrical system of the building to accept the power of a portable generator to run up to 10 single-pole (120-Volt) circuits or 5 double-pole (240-Volt) circuits or any combination of the 2. It allows you to power electrical appliances, lighting, and many other household circuits during a power outage. This transfer switch is completely code compliant and keeps the generator power isolated from the utility power at all times.

A better and safer option is to use a longer power cord from the generator to the switch. I placed mine within the 18 inches recommended. I was lucky that I could place my outdoor plug in box within 4 feet of the transfer switch.

You can use this Transfer Switch with any 10 circuits in your main panel. You can only use one 30 amp double poll breaker on circuits A and B only. (That's because those wires are 10 gauge) The other eight circuits are 12 gauge wire. You can switch/add more 20 amp breakers if needed. You will have to decide if 10 circuits will run the things you need most and how much power they all use. Under stand that you can't use this Transfer Switch with your 50 or 60 amp breakers. This kit comes with the 240 inlet to install inside/outside. You will only need to buy the (4) 10 gauge wires to connect the inlet box to the Transfer Switch.

This kit is only available with a ten foot cord, but longer cords are available separately. Please look at internet no. 202216499 for a 20 foot cord and internet no. 202216500 for a 40 foot cord. Both have lighted receptacles.

Breaker box must be installed indoors unless you purchase the outdoor model. This model does come with an Outdoor plug for the generator to plug into when needed.

How big of a generator could I use with this transfer switch

Asked by Bill April 16, 2020

As big of generator as you want as long as you stay below the capacity of the cabling. Based on a rating of 30 amps, 7200 W is the max everything would be rated for (240 volts x 30 amps = 7200 watts). If this is the specification equipment was design to, anything more than that could result in damage. That being said if you use a 10000 W generator at 70% load you should be good.

How will this not backfeed onto the grid?

Every connected circuit is interrupted by the individual upper switches. Every circuit is either powered by grid or generator. It cant be both (unless you wire it wrong)

Well Appointed Kit for the Savvy & Brave Homeowner
Happy I could do this installation myself. But only because of the super-helpful videos on YouTube produced by Reliance AND the excellent reviews of this product and their pictures posted here on the Home Depot website. As you will see in my pictures, I'm adding this transfer switch to a house built in 1979 and the breaker panel was a mess! I first had to map the breakers so I understood which ones I wanted to transfer. The instructions that come with this very well appointed kit help you determine how to assign the fuses/breakers so that the load is balanced (but I also used an excel spreadsheet). A run to the internet to look up wattages of household items also helped. I knew I wanted the well pump, refrigerator, kitchen outlets and a couple bedroom outlets at the minimum to be powered by my 5500W portable Generac generator. But if you have a gas furnace or water heater, I'd add those breakers as well (mine is a heat pump). I've installed outdoor lamps, fixed indoor lamps and installed ceiling fans, so I know my way around the breaker panel and electricity basics. As stated, these reviews and the Reliance videos gave me the confidence I needed to work inside the panel. Working the 10/3 Romex cable I used from the generator outdoor receptacle to the transfer switch was a pain inside the plastic conduit but that outdoor receptacle is SOOO convenient. I've used the setup a couple times now due to power outages and works like a charm - I love it!

This is an excellent, extremely well built transfer switch that is easy to install if you are an advanced DIY’er. Due to the configuration of my power panel, it would have been nice if the leads to the breakers were 12 inches longer. I needed to add extension leads to 4 wires to reach the top breakers on my panel.

Easy install
Decided to install this after losing power for 5 days after hurricane Irma, having to run extension cords all through out the house to power everything is time consuming and a big pain, now 10 minutes after losing power I'm up and ready, did all the rough in installation myself, just hired a electrician to do the actual hookup, could do myself but electrician can pull permit so everything is legal

Not for the weekend warroir. That being said, if you understand basic 120v ac circuitry and panels, this was a breeze. The kit comes with everything you need to connect to your existing electrical panel. I would suggest buying additional tan Ideal wire nuts as the yellows that come with the kit are a lower quality.

Relatively easy to install. Did not encounter any problems. Installation instructions were easy to follow. The entire install took about six hours, and a good portion of that was reading and planning and then testing the system. I'm glad I got this done.

Easy install and awesome addition to any home!
I installed this transfer switch myself to serve 10 individual 110v circuits. Install time was about 4 hours and went smoothly. You will have to supply your own 10/3 wire to run from the exterior outlet back to the transfer switch. I opted for the armored cable which looks nice and protects the wiring. I also added an interior metal box and cover to have a nicer looking pass through in the wall. Highly recommend and would definitely buy again.
