Answer This Question

A:  My location in Pittsburgh. Search around. Very good water heater

A:  I ordered mine through the Home Depot website. I had it delivered to the store, and picked it up. I installed the unit to replace 2 50 gallon heaters. The install was straight forward, and I could mot be happier with the purchase. Hot water reaches the faucets faster than brfore. Great upgrade!

Q:Hi, the 85 Gal. says out of stock. Any idea when more will be arriving? I installed a SafeStep walk-in tub fro my mother-in-law but our 50 gal electric water heater just can't provide enough hot water to fill it. So we're ready to upgrade to this one.

A:  The robo-op fielded this question to me, a former purchaser, to answer.  Unfortunately, it obviously needs to be answered by your individual HD store staff.  Good luck.

A:  I don't know about your area, but I spoke with a Rheem dealer that I know of and they said 85 gals won't be around until May. Don't know about for Home Depot though

                  Answer This Question

A:  Hi Brian and thank you for your question. Standby losses are those related to keeping the hot water standing by in a tank or keeping your water heater ready to fire again at a moment's notice.

Repeat Buyer - Couldn't Be Happier
Our house has two main water heaters. After replacing the west unit with a Rheem Marathon 85-gallon a year ago, I replaced the east unit with this 105-gallon unit this month. Both are working flawlessly, and I'm happy I shouldn't ever have to replace either. If only Rheem would make a Marathon small enough to replace the little unit under our kitchen sink, I'd be in water heater heaven. : ) p.s. Don't worry about a small amount of water that leaks from the vacuum relief valve during initial filling; that's normal. Rheem may want to add information that to the Use and Care Manual.

                              Plastic JUNK
I ordered and waited 3 weeks, without hot water, to receive the 85 gallon Marathon tank. I Installed it and the “Vacuum Relief Valve” blew out causing major damage to my drywall. Rheem sent a new valve and I repaired the drywall. After installing it, It also blew out causing more drywall damage. I called Rheem, again, and was told that “I would have to take it to an Authorized Rheem Service Technician and pay to have it repaired”. I returned it to Home Depot for a refund. This is absolute JUNK.

                                Plastic Junk
Purchased a Marathon 85 gallon Water Heater from Home Depot on 4 AUG 21. Received an email from Home Depot stating that “it is on its way” and would be delivered to the Columbus GA store on 9 AUG 21. Call the Store on Tuesday and spoke to the manager. She informed me that the water tank would not arrive until September 3. So I contacted corporate who escalated the issue. I guess it takes Home Depot 4 weeks to ship an item from the east coast of Georgia to Columbus Georgia. A couple of weeks later, I received the tank, and installed it. The “Vacuum Relief Valve” malfunctioned, saturating my drywall (which I had to replace). I called Rheem and was initially told it would be 5 to 7 days for replacement parts. Having explained my situation, they overnighted the parts. 30 minutes after receiving the NEW PARTS, I installed the new Vacuum Relief Valve. Wouldn’t you know it, it Malfunctioned and once again all over my drywall. I emailed and called Rheem and told them what happened with the NEW valve and was informed that I would have to pay out of pocket for an authorized rheem service technician to come out and fix the NEW water heater. So, I remove the hot water tank and returned it back to Home Depot. While at Home Depot, I received an email stating “ Your case has been reviewed and based on the information provided to us, your water heater is unrepairable and will need to be replaced. Please contact a local Rheem professional plumber who can assist you with locating a replacement through a Rheem distributor”. If you are in the Columbus Georgia area and in need of a large water heater, do not buy a Rheem 85 gallon Marathon hot water heater that is discounted in price. It will cost you more than you know. The Rheem Marathon 85 gallon Water Heater is a piece of Plastic JUNK. I suspect at Home Depot will remove this review because it does not paint a flattering picture for neither Home Depot nor Rheem.

Much less efficient than claimed. Much.
It's big but a terrible energy hog. I installed it in a not yet occupied house, so the water draw is zero. My unit has 3800 watt elements. I noticed the unit turning on for 5 minutes every half hour. This would equate to an annual energy cost of $555 if electricity costs $0.10kwh. Kind of a normal use case but this with NO use. This was after I turned off the recirculator. Before I did that, the unit turned on every 15 minutes for 5 minutes. The product brochure claims it loses 5 deg. F after 24 hours in "standby." I'm assuming that means "off." I tested the temperature by putting a probe thermometer in the outflow spigot at the bottom and opening it up. It was 133 deg. F. I then cut the power. Exactly 24 hours later the temperature was 104 deg. F. Nearly a 30 degree drop! This was in a 67 deg. F room.

                                    Stopped working after 2 months
I originally installed this unit on 12/31/2020. It started acting up just 2 months later and after some troubleshooting I identified the upper thermostat was faulty. I reached out to rheem but got no response back. I ended up going to home depot and buying/installing the thermostat because I couldn't have my kids taking cold showers. If rheem responds and stands behind their product I will update this review.

Practically brand new and it's leaking
After installing the 50 gallon unit at one home and having no issues I got the 85 gallon water heater for my other home. Shortly after it was installed it started leaking. There is no water collecting around the top of the heater near the cold water inlet/hot water outlet and there is no water around the pressure relief valve or the drain valve BUT there is water collecting below the unit.

Old heater was on the outs so we looked at all kinds of replacement models. Decided on the Rheem Commercial series. The reviews were not bad on Home Depot but other sites were less than stellar. The bad reviews seem to coincide with earlier versions. We purchased online and picked it up at the store. Store helped with loading and we lugged it home. Word to the wise this thing is huge, so pay close attention to the dimensions if your replacement is smaller ours was 65 gallon. I installed it myself and this thing is working awesome. My girls are not complaining about running out of hot water anymore and the recovery time on this sucker is quick versus my 15 year old previous heater. Time will tell but so far we are happy with this heater. Do not forget to register your warranty you do get the lifetime if left unregistered.
