What size is the tank? how much room do I need below the sink?
Asked by: Al
The tank is 9 3/4 “ diameter and 14” tall. The “pop off” valve and inlet & outlet are on top of the unit. You need a minimum of 4” to accommodate hook up. The drain and access panel are on one side which needs to be pointed out for access. So you need 18” of vertical space below the counter bottom or sink.

Can this be installed in an enclosed outdoor environment? I am having an outdoor kitchen installed and would like an under sink POS water heater. I have discussed tankless with my plumber, but he recommended I install a small standard type water heater. Is sounds like a reasonable idea, but Rheem states that this is only for indoor use. Has anyone used one of these in an outdoor setting and if so, what results have you had?
Asked by: VetteMan60
I have a bathroom in my garage and installed the water heater in that bathroom. Then I ran pvc pipe to my outdoor kitchen sink. This way the heater is protected better than if it were under the sink of my outdoor kitchen even though I have a patio cover over my outdoor kitchen area. Perhaps you can install the water heater in a similar way.

Performance 2.5 gal. 6-Year 1440-Watt Single Element Electric Point-Of-Use Water Heater is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 213.

About 15 years ago I installed a GE 2 1/2 gallon point-of-use hot water heater under our kitchen sink so we would have a satisfactory supply of hot water to our sink and the dishwasher. Worked great and solved the problem. A few months ago, however, age caught up with the heater and it started leaking due to corrosion. GE no longer makes that heater so I had to do considerable research to find a replacement. The problem is that the heater has to sit behind our garbage disposal in a very tight space. At nine and 1/2 inches in diameter, the Rheem water heater is the only unit I could find to fit in that tight space. Been in place and working for several months now and am very happy with the heater! The reason I am giving this only a 4 rating is that it was not completely ready to install. Our sink, as do most sinks, uses flex water lines with 1/2 in. NPST fittings. Had to make a second trip to the store to get two 1/2 in X 3in pipes to be able to hook our water lines to the heater. As our fittings are the most common method, it would be nice if Rheem included those pipes with the heater; they're not that expensive. The second reason is that while the heater does include a pressure relief valve there is no fitting on the valve to which you can fit a drain hose. Had some trouble finding an adapter and hose that would work. Overall though, I am happy with the heater as it provides us with a dependable supply of hot water for our kitchen.

Easy to adjust thermostat (90-150 degrees if I remember correctly ). 2.5 gallons seems like it might be too small but it's plenty for a full size family. Mine is installed under my kitchen sink and I love it. My dishwasher is working better than ever , and that's without the expensive detergent! Super hot water > fancy soap. Disregard the pocket change in energy costs this little Rheem consumes in a year, look at how much money you save by buying standard dish detergent instead of the expensive alternatives. This thing will pay for itself in no time. Hotter water, cleaner dishes, AND saving money. It's crazy every house doesn't have one of these in the kitchen, most people dont even know these tiny water heaters exist.

Temp control is accurate, straightforward, and accessible. If flex tubing is used, the unit is easily moved even if full. I like the idea of having a drain valve. It can be wall mounted, though I didn't need that. Allow ~$30 for fittings (that would be true for any unit). Folks at Home Depot were very helpful with this. It' great having instant hot water!

Used two 3/8”x1/2”x16” flex hoses and a 3/8” nipple to connect the hot water line to the tank and then from tank to hot water on the faucet. Plug into 120v and now I have instant HOT water at the kitchen sink. Works Great.

The 120 degree default setting is perfect for avoiding yelping children. It does a great job providing piping hot water long enough to rinse a few plates, and a good job of bridging the 4 min gap until the main hot water arrives at the tap.

This Rheem 2.5 gallon, under the sink, H2O heater replaced an identical Westinghouse brand, as Westinghouse no longer manufactures the 2.5 gallon product.
