Questions & Answers

ELECTRICITY

Does this water heater need to be plugged into an electrical ooutlet?
Asked by: Bob
If you look at the answer by Rheem - they list a DIFFERENT water heater model than this one...that seems to be creating confusion for people.

if the power is down, can I ignite it myself?

Performance Platinum 50 gal. Tall 12 Year 40,000 BTU Energy Star Natural Gas Water Heater. I wanna buy this brand water heater. if the power is down for a few minutes, can I ignite it myself? Thanks Stella
Asked by: Stella
Yes you can. The "electronic igniter" is a piezo-electric device. No power ( electricity ) is needed to produce a spark. The spark is produced by pushing a button, which causes a spring-loaded hammer, to hit a crystal of PZT or quartz crystal. This produces a small electric spark. It is this spark that lights the pilot lite. So if you lose power to your house you are still able to light this water heater. Hope this helps.

Does this Rheem model require a 110v hook up?

I need to know if I need to provide an electrical outlet near the water heater location.
Asked by: Rich
Yes it does...it is energy star efficient because, in part, there is no pilot light as it is electronically ignited...when needed. This is not an always-on pilot light. One should keep in mind of local building codes in terms of the electrical, not just the plumbing as well. It has to be a grounded outlet or they won't install it. BTW, the width of the tank is 21.34" if close to the furnace. Verify the distance of the outlet distance as I was told the cable was about 19 feet long, but one could buy a couple of feet with a surge protector strip as the go-between.

This product possible installed in attic areas?

Asked by: Jindori
I would not recommending installing in an attic. It is a very big heavy unit. It requires gas and water lines and an expansion tank (required in most building codes). There is always the possibility of undetected a gas or water leak because of attic location. It also requires an exhaust vent to the outside.

Performance Platinum 38 Gal. Tall 12 Year 40,000 BTU Natural Gas ENERGY STAR Tank Water Heater is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 900.

Blinking LED plus troubleshooting chart indicated vapor sensor lock out. Called Rheem, who helped me reset this sensor - easy to do, and the unit immediately turned on - cool! 5 minutes later, it stops working again. Per Rheem's questions - there are no paint or gas fumes of any kind our utility room. Repeated the reset process three times, and got the same result. Now the hard part - getting Rheem to answer questions on the warranty process. Rheem's online form does not function - one of the "required" fields does not accept an entry. Calling Rheem for warranty guidance - on hold forever - arghh!! Meanwhile, I have a cranky wife and kids, because there is no hot water and I don't know how to get this fixed under warranty. Rheem warranty support - a total loser.

We got this one installed in April 21 2017 and within 2 years we have water smell issue. We have well water, but have iron filter, softener before water gets to this heater. Installer, homedepot folks never told not to install this if we have well water, not even Rheem doesn't say that. Before installing this one, we had AO Smith and it lasted ~10 years in the same setup without any issues. I have had bad experience with Rheem water heaters in my condo where I stayed 10 years and had to replace 2 times with Rheem in 7 years (they covered tank as part of warranty) before I switched to Kenmoore brand and no issues for ~7 years (I am renting that place now, so still own it). I don't recommend this product for the people with the own well as this is not a good product and Anode rode issue seems to be not covered in warranty (their 3 years FULL warranty doesn't cover Anode rode as they say its sacrificial part, not covered)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Works good for a month the constantly shuts down I've installed 6 water heaters in the past 8 years in my parents houses, some rentals and finally this one in my own home. Never had an issue with any of them except this one. This has been the worse one I have owned! It worked great for the 1st month or so, and then it started shutting down. Calling Rheem, they try to blame everything from gas pressure to something about your house. Once you finally satisfy them that everything on your end is fine (had to purchase a $60 gas gauge and also call the gas company in to verify it) and then I had to send them pictures of how the heater was vented, etc...they finally try to work with you to fix it. They first sent me a new gas valve. I put that in and it worked again for about a month then started shutting down. They finally sent a plumber (after 2 weeks of cold water with a 4yr old in the house) and they had him replace the pilot assembly ...that worked for about 2 weeks and now it is shutting down again. Replacing it after 3 months of wasted time and cold water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Energy savings understated The most important feature of this water heater, which is not explained here is that during periods of stand by the flu is entirely closed off by an electrically-operated vent damper that exactly fits the inside of the flu. That there is no pilot does NOT save money because in a normal gas water heater the pilot replaces some of the heat that is constantly escaping from the flu. The energy savings is in the electronic damper. When the water heater is not operating NO heat escapes up the flu (at a rate that would otherwise approximate 1,000 BTU per hour - thus the absence of need for a pilot light). In addition the tank is well insulated so it is like closing all openings to an ice box. The 10' cord is long enough to reach many plugs and though code would not recommend it, the heater uses little electricity so a 3-wire extension cord could be used. Otherwise the unit will likely replace exactly your own unit. While there are many variables, assuming a therm of natural gas costs the consumer $1.00, it is possible to recover the higher cost of this unit in two years.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rheem Customer service was terrible We bought the Wi-Fi unit so we could lower the water temp while we were away. Super excited about this convenient, money saving feature. The first time we tried it, the flammable vapor sensor and the gas control valve failed. We lowered the temp to 95, with the app, but the temperature would not go up again, then stopped working all together. After the better part of two days on the phone with Rheem, and a visit from the plumber, we were ready to call it quits. But Home Depot would not pay to have a replacement installed, so we had to press on. We showered at the gym while the parts from the east coast made their way to Montana. After 5 days of battling with the problem, the plumber installed two new components on a 6 month old heater. It works again. Three different customer service people at Rheem varied from just competent to rude. One guy accused us of lying. Nice. Should have given more weight to the other reviews about the flammable vapor sensor.

Bought the water heater on Friday, had it installed the following Tuesday, and discovered a leak at the bottom of the tank on Wednesday. Yep, brand new and defective. I should have listened to the other reviews. Now for the worse part. Called Rheem, who told me they'll have a technician call within 24 hrs. 24 hrs came and went so called Rheem back. They informed me the technician they assigned the job declined it due to a "lifting" restriction and furthermore they can't find any technician in our area (we live in Westminster, CO. a major suburb of Denver. REALLY!). So now I must locate a plumber, pay $800+ out of my pocket to remove the defective unit, return it to Home Depot and install the new unit - AND HOPE ITS NOT ANOTHER LEMON, and then submit a warranty reimbursement claim. Yep, I should have listed to the other reviews. On the bright side, Home Depot was helpful finding a plumber and supposedly the work will be done tomorrow. But no one wanted to deal with the Rheem warranty process. Take it for what its worth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install, started right up We replaced our 14 year old 40 gallon unit before it crapped out just to be on the safe side and I'm not sure why we waited this long. This Rheem unit is priced well and was very simple to install. It was almost the same size so I had to cut the existing water pipes a little bit and trim the flue just a little to make it fit. Other than that it was practically plug and play. I used the sharkbite braided supply lines to make the connection from the water heater to the house water lines. It was so easy it almost seems too good to be true. The gas took just a few seconds to light and the thing was in service. No problems at all right from the get go. The electrical cord is about 10 feet long so I didn't even have to run a new electrical box to where my water heater sits. The supply stubs are already installed which makes the setup even easier. Just attach the gas, attach the pressure release tube (reused from my old water heater), attach the hot/cold lines, and plug it in.

I purchased this water heater to replace my old water heater that was 12 years old and half its life was used with well water. I also was concerned it was past its time and could start leaking and had no pan under it. The new unit was easy to install, gas line port was the same height as the old one. This unit has a 12 year Rheem warranty and qualified for the 100.00 dollar energy rebate from the gas company making the purchase even better.
