Questions & Answers

ELECTRICITY

Does this water heater need to be plugged into an electrical ooutlet?
Asked by: Bob
If you look at the answer by Rheem - they list a DIFFERENT water heater model than this one...that seems to be creating confusion for people.

if the power is down, can I ignite it myself?

Performance Platinum 50 gal. Tall 12 Year 40,000 BTU Energy Star Natural Gas Water Heater. I wanna buy this brand water heater. if the power is down for a few minutes, can I ignite it myself? Thanks Stella
Asked by: Stella
Yes you can. The "electronic igniter" is a piezo-electric device. No power ( electricity ) is needed to produce a spark. The spark is produced by pushing a button, which causes a spring-loaded hammer, to hit a crystal of PZT or quartz crystal. This produces a small electric spark. It is this spark that lights the pilot lite. So if you lose power to your house you are still able to light this water heater. Hope this helps.

Does this Rheem model require a 110v hook up?

I need to know if I need to provide an electrical outlet near the water heater location.
Asked by: Rich
Yes it does...it is energy star efficient because, in part, there is no pilot light as it is electronically ignited...when needed. This is not an always-on pilot light. One should keep in mind of local building codes in terms of the electrical, not just the plumbing as well. It has to be a grounded outlet or they won't install it. BTW, the width of the tank is 21.34" if close to the furnace. Verify the distance of the outlet distance as I was told the cable was about 19 feet long, but one could buy a couple of feet with a surge protector strip as the go-between.

This product possible installed in attic areas?

Asked by: Jindori
I would not recommending installing in an attic. It is a very big heavy unit. It requires gas and water lines and an expansion tank (required in most building codes). There is always the possibility of undetected a gas or water leak because of attic location. It also requires an exhaust vent to the outside.

Customer Reviews

Performance Platinum 38 Gal. Tall 12 Year 40,000 BTU Natural Gas ENERGY STAR Tank Water Heater is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 904.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The plumber praised it highly I researched other water heaters before deciding on this one. The plumber had no problems with the installation and told me several times how good a model it is. Among other features, it blows exhaust up so that wind has a harder time pushing it back down the pipe and it's so well insulated that Rheem discourages adding a blanket. The dial on the front is super easy to read and even at the lowest setting the water is hot in the shower. The plumber also told me that if they are given the choice they always install Rheem, and he said that my ordering it saved some money. Reviews of other models made it clear to me that spending a little extra on this one would buy some peace of mind. The plumber confirmed that other models have more issues. I can't speak to its durability yet because it's only been a few weeks, but so far I'm completely satisfied with the purchase.

I special ordered this because it had a 12 year warranty, was efficient and had decent reviews. Turned out to be a major pain the rear. The contractor installed it and when he plugged in the power supply got nothing off the power panel. Contacted Rheem and after a long hold and runaround, found out that the wiring harness was plugged in backwards at the flue damper. The Rheem rep said that that sometimes happens, along with the wiring harness not being plugged in at all (which would have been preferable in my case). I was at first told that they could overnight the power supply, but after checking stock the Rheem rep said they didn't have it in stock and had no idea when one might be available. I was offered to wait while one came in or special order this heater again (which took 2-1/2 weeks to come in the first time). Returned it and got a floor model instead. Hindsight being 20/20, that's what I should have done in the first place.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gas Pressure Misrepresentation I found the Water softener install easy. When i went to flip the switch to light the pilot I was unable to get the main burner. After a few calls to Rheem customer service they said it is the gas pressure. I had our local gas provider come out and they measured the gas pressure at 5.8. The pressure on the water softener states 5.0 min-12.0max. I called Rheem back and they said my unit will NOT operate at this low gas pressure and unless I can get the gas company to increase my gas pressure i will not be able to get the unit to work. We asked the gas company to increase the pressure and they said they couldn't. I am upset that the specifications state a minimum gas pressure which I clearly meet yet representatives state the unit can not be operated. I have a water heater now that I am being told can not be used. And yes I got the 6 flashes and then 1.......after it cycled for 3 times trying to ignite it gave a final code of 6 flashes and 5. Model # XG50T12DM40UD and serial # Q501506482.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seems like a really good replacement I bought this to replace a 7 year old 40 gallon Rheem. Our city has has 32 grain hard water so I noticed small leaks on the inlet and outlet valves on my prior model while installing a new water softener. My local gas company offers a $100 rebate for this model since it is .69 Energy Star so this made this purchase a sensible one. I used my own plumber who did the job for 2/3rds of what HD's contractors wanted. The unit itself is a nice platinum gray color with a cool automated exhaust cap. You will need electric for this since the pilot is on demand as well. The unit has a really good warranty and I plan to drain a few quarts of water out the bottom every quarter and eventually replace the annode rod to extend the life beyond the 12 year warranty period. I can't speak to reliability as I have only had it for about 8 hours but so far it does its job.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 years and both will not stay lit...... Have had the hot water heaters for 2 years and both have stopped working. Contacted customer support with a technician at my house and they sent out parts because it was coverd under warranty. The first customer service rep was great. On a follow up call after receiving one of three parts in the mail the second cusomer service person was less than stellar. She continued to tell me I was not giving her the information and telling me what was said on my first conversation with cusomer service but once I gave her both serial numbers she said well I must have not heard them correctly. They are now sending more parts out and I get to have no hot water for a few more days now. Asked if I could get a number to a technision and she said no, if I don't hear from someone in one business day I should call back. That would be a Saturday and they are not open. She then told me I could call Monday, so I get another few days with out hot water. Really, you can't give me a number to your contractor? I have 2 units and both do not work so I have no hot water in my house. I guess the upside is that one is in the attic and the other in the garage and with our temperatures in Texas, I have lukewarm water to shower in. One upside to having tempatures in the 100's!

Just had this product installed less a week and very impressed with the performance and SMART features. My Kenmore corroded from the bottom and the replacement was on backorder. Sears allowed me to purchase another product and I chose the Rheem Platinum. I liked the gas saving feature of heating as needed and pilot shutoff. The other feature to protect the home is the water leak sensor which shuts the unit down until the issue is resolved. It also supports wifi for remote monitoring and leak alert. I'm very pleased with the hot water performance...it's hot and I've had to drop the setting down to the next lowest temperature which is hot but not scalding. So far I couldn't have made a better decision with this product. ⁰

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor QA and customer support I bought this and proceed to install this water heater. After installation, I plugged in the power and nothing happened. My heart sunk. My fear, from reading issues others were having, came through. Like many other buyers have gotten, the water heater is defective. It looked like there was no power, so I tried another outlet but of no avail. My installer diagnosed the power input and found that the power wire harness of the transformer has a loose wire. We proceed to solder and connect it back. The water heater now fired up and is working. I'm not sure how durable this water heater will be. I called the warranty number to get the defective transformer part and was first told that it will shipped to me overnight. Then, I got another call next day to tell me they are out of stock. In order to get the part, I have to be continuously calling them to check on the part availability. I should have to be the one to check when they are supposed to ship me a replacement part due to their poor QA. Given the poor QA and customer support, I won't recommend this to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Water Heater I have to say, water heater installation is too easy now. These new press-on connections make everything easy. That said, this water heater replaced a builder-grade 40-gallon water heater that barely gave us two full showers. In addition to that, we have a whirlpool tub to fill (that never happened unless it was 100 outside) and occasional college kids home for the weekend. Needless to say the old water heater didn't cut it. Installation was very straight forward, gas line was the same height as the old one, and we had to cut the water lines anyway for the new fittings. After filling the tank, it took about an hour for hot water at 140 degrees. This water heater along with a tempering valve successfully filled our tub with 120-degree water with no cold water in sight. We can all take showers at the same time with no loss of hot water. This should also help us with the plans for the additional basement bathroom coming in the near future. By the way, if you're in the Midwest and use Laclede Gas, you can apply for the $125 rebate for this water heater due to the Energy Star rating. I verified this water heater is on the list and confirmed the rebate with Laclede. A very nice additional price drop...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Needs Electricity for Pilot to Stay Lit The problem with this water heater is that in order for it to run, it needs electricity. If your power goes out, so does the pilot on your water heater. The display said that it had an electric gas valve diagnostic monitor. I understood that to mean that it would monitor performance through the diagnostic monitors. I did not take that to mean that the tank needed electricity to run. Well, I lost power and the pilot light went out, so I lost hot water. So, if you want a hot water tank to continue to function when your electricity goes out, then do NOT buy this hot water heater. I wish I purchased the Rheem water heater with the 12 year 50 gallon hot water heater without the electric diagnostic monitor. Just a note, when I called Rheem about this, their technical support said that the hot water heater was designed to turn off the pilot when there is a loss of electricity. Rheem's recommendation to me was to install a generator!

I will admit that the support line is great and they are really helpful however the challenges with this water heater. The first unit that I installed, had a bad gas sensor, while it was provided in two days that unit only worked for several hours before another problem cropped up. Two days later and another part to replace, call support, wait another two days. This required taking apart the entire lower part of the heater, once replaced the same issue occurred. Support determined that this was a bad heater. Rheem paid for a plumber to come out and replace the entire water heater. Well two days later and the same problem again. Currently waiting for the next part to be delivered. If this part does not work I am going to request a full exchange.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY. You will only get 1 shower with hot water. Right out of the gate we had problems. Day... DO NOT BUY. You will only get 1 shower with hot water. Right out of the gate we had problems. Day one after being newly installed by a local plumber and the thermostat didn't work properly (this was diagnosed by Rheem while on the phone with us taking the water temp, etc.). Rheem sent out a plumber to replace the thermostat. But the next time we tried to take a shower we only got about 9 minutes of hot water. Rheem sent out another plumber to check the dip tube, but it was fine. Out of our own pocket we paid the plumber to remain and try to figure out what could be wrong. He checked out lines... he checked everything... and said the only conceivable thing that it could be was the water heater itself. We called Rheem and said it only produced a single 9 minute hot shower. They said that's what we should expect! We did another test showing we get around 25 gallons of hot water. We have a normal shower head and not multiples that consume inordinate amounts of water. Rheem said you only get about 70% of your tank's total capacity of hot water at any one time. Huh???? We paid over $1000 for a heater and plumber that performs far more poorly than the 17 year old heater it replaced. BEWARE if you want more than a single nine minute hot shower, do not buy this heater. If you must buy from Rheem, consider the 70% above and what size tank you would need to get the 4-5 consecutive showers that are advertised. What a mess.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Only 24 hours old and not working I have been on the phone with Rheem for most of the morning (talking and on hold). My hot water heater didn't even make it to its 24 hr birthday and needs a part replaced so there is no hot water here. Rheem will be sending it out and I may expect it in a day or two. They are unable to say exactly when. Once I have the part, I have to find a licensed plumber who is willing to do the work for $125 or less and is also willing to wait 4-6 weeks to be paid OR I get to pay the plumber and wait 4-6 weeks to be reimbursed by Rheem. They are unable to provide a list of plumbers who work with them or are willing to accept this deal. Looks like hot water is too much to expect with a brand new Rheem . It feels like I paid quite a bit for nothing and the hits just keep coming. Well, I do admit the kids had a great time with the box. It worked just fine. One more thing, the user manual is VERY VERY POOR.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very pretty, but avoid it. I normally don’t write reviews for products. Normally the product just works and an additional review of hey it works doesn’t really do any one any good. This hot water heater is not one of those products. The Rheem is a very good looking hot water tank, that’s about it. After doing the install the igniter system would not fire. No spark equals no fire. Kind of important for a gas hot water tank. After calling customer support on Saturday ( day of install) Rheem scheduled a service technician to come out on Monday. Monday afternoon the repair man arrived and reported that it doesn’t ignite. ( Thanks ). He then called customer support and had to have an igniter assembly overnight shipped out. The entire time the Rheem hot water tank is trying to ignite there is a heavy smell of natural gas. Which makes me think what will happen if the igniter stops working in a couple of years and I’m not at the house to turn off the hot water tank? Will the basement fill with natural gas? So I decieded to return this Rheem water tank and go to the other big box store and get a Whirlpool hot water tank. Home Depot returned the hot water tank no problem. So high marks for customer service at Home Depot, low marks for carrying such a poor product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the Effort As all of the other positive reviewers stated, this hot water heater is above average in all categories pertaining to quality, ease of installation and reliability. With that said I only had one complaint, buyer beware of the rebate offer made on these energy efficient units. The state of Oregon will not allow a home owner to install a gas appliance, insulation or any other energy savings devices and insist that it must be done by a licensed contractor. Say what????? We used all of the latest plumbing accessories i.e. shark bite connectors, a replacement ball valve and new gas fitting. The fact that this hot water heater has a sealed combustion chamber and can be installed in your hall closet and on a combustible floor does not matter to the energy trust of Oregon. What boils my blood is they could not really give me a good excuse as to why a home owner cannot connect two water lines, gas line and exhaust pipe to a new tank without paying a contractor big bucks to do it. I even offered to pay for an inspection to check out the install, nope! no can do.. Go figure.... at least we have a new high efficiency hot water tank for the next 12 years and it did not cost us double the price by having it installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nicely designed unit. This water heater replaced a 50 gallon unit that was at the end of it's life. The insulation must be better as this unit was not quite as tall nor as large a diameter as the one it replaced but this one is Energy Star rated. The T&P valve is located on the side, above the drain cock. This makes installation a bit cleaner at the top and you can easily toggle the T&P valve if you want to make sure it works. Access to the top of a tank is usually difficult. The base of this unit is flat, it does not have three little feet on the bottom like a lot of tanks do. I prefer a flat bottom as it spreads the weight of 50 gallons of water better. This unit does not use a standing pilot light. It has electronic ignition so it gains some efficiency overall. It has a exhaust flue damper that opens when unit is running and closes when off. The control unit has the ability to troubleshoot and will flash a fault code if there is a problem. There is a fault code chart located on the case. The power cord that comes with it was certainly long enough. It plugs into a 115 vac receptacle and has a screw tab you can use to make sure it stays in place. I pluged mine into a surge suppressor that also feeds the HVAC unit. I just wish they would put handles on the sides of the tanks to help you get a grip when setting them in place. As far as I know no one provide handles. It fired right up and had a hot tank of water in very short order.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buyer Beware! The unit was purchased from my local HD store. When installed concurrently with a new central heating and air system, the unit failed to start. The technician (the local RHEEM servicing vendor) tried for two hours to troubleshoot the system to no avail. As a last resort he contacted the RHEEM "support" center for assistance. The were quick to point out he should contact the local RHEEM servicing agent and he indicated, "I am the servicing agent". After another thirty minutes the RHEEM tech support center indicated that there was a faulty gas valve and would need change-out before the system would work. When I asked when we might expect the replacement part RHEEM indicated that the part would be put in "expedited" FEDEX with no known arrival date to my home. I am both perplexed and frustrated. My home is now without hot water for washing clothing, dishes and moreover showering. When I contacted the local HD manager there I was told "there is another unit in the store and it could be changed out" (at $375 cost to me). Not exactly the best or customer sensitive offer. I noted that on the tank (new out of the box) that the unit has "PASSED INSPECTION"; really, now!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great water heater, but beware the installation costs I recommend the water heater, I don't recommend Home Depot installation. The price I was quoted on the phone ended up being half the amount I actually paid. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with paying to have the job done right, and they did have to do some extra non-standard tasks during the install (replace corroded valve, correct expansion tank placement, replace flue vent). I just feel like if I had several people come out and give me quotes, they would have given me quotes for "the job" itself, not line item me to death after someone stayed home from work to meet an installer based on an initial quote that was WAY off. The installation of this water heater ended up costing me almost $900, an insane amount by any standards. Home Depot customer care was nice enough to offer me a marginal rebate via gift card, but overall, I am not very happy about it and will definitely not ever use Home Depot installers again.
