Efficient? Yes! What's not to like? It's noisy!!
This is a good water heater, it is efficient and will save pretty close to the money Rheem claims, but they do not mention it's major drawback, and that is the noise it generates, both from the fan which is loud and the condenser unit which has a penetrating buzzy, clicky sound. In the average home, this could be deal breaker. I read about it before I bought mine and I hoped it would not be as bad as people made out, but it was. Our laundry/utility room is under the kitchen, the sound easily penetrated the uninsulated flooring. Worse, the noise permeated into the the living space and the bedroom downstairs which have a common walls with the utility room. Something had to be done, so I set about doing some McGyver sound insulation. I wrapped the top half of the tank and the top with some leftover carpet pad - 1/2" dense foam with a water seal backing, making sure to leave the intake and exhaust clear, next I cut a plastic storage box to the shape needed to direct the exhaust downwards and insulted that with the carpet pad. Finally I built a hood with an overhang to cover the intake out of cardboard and wood and insulted that too. My sound meter is bust, so I can't tell exactly how much this reduced the noise, but I would say around 60%, which is better than I had expected. The fix cost me $20 in materials. I researched professional acoustic materials before starting, finding the cost of those materials would have been ~$500. It does look a little funky, but it works and I am am moving on. I do think Rheem should be more upfront about the noise. Maybe I should start a business doing should insulation on Rheem water heaters.

    Very Nice Water Heater
Great water heater for a family of 4. It took about 2hrs to install myself but not overly difficult w/ CPVC. Now all I need is it to help lower my electric bill!!!! I do like the app and it is easy to use.

80Gallon Pro Terra Elec HW Htr
My all elec AO Smith was 15+ years old and I wanted a more efficient solution (plus there was rust showing telling me it was time). Found this Rheem 80G Pro Terra Hybrid Unit on sale at HD. After checking the heights in my mech room I ordered this unit and hired a local plumber to install with Pro Press copper. Unit fired up and the first warm up was all elec coils and heat pump. Holds 120degF easily. The app is weak and glitchy for the first 48 hours. One false alarm on day #2 for a water leak and the safety valve closed like a clam. Cleared the alarm and runs well ever since. We use about 220 gallons total water each day and estimate 120+ HW of that total. Fluctuating in Energy Saver mode and I can see the spike when elec coils called to work. Rheem should have their own app as there is no explanation of the sequence of operations when either elec coil is asked to work. I realized my house using two + long showers while kitchen cooking is the peak. The instructions call for a pan which prevents service to the leak rope sensor when following their installation instructions. I chose the hard pipe connections as the braided soft connection tend to be the weak point. This unit does make noise and is like a larger fridge in my living room directly above the heater. I knew this in advance so this should not be a mystery to you when buying this unit. Very tolerable if you expect it. Pulls the room down 5 deg F and less humid during this summer. A better app or control board would show the three sensors and indicate when the coils are running. Or better yet show tank temperature at the low med high point. This current model is excellent and I recommend it highly for those who need to change their current elec unit. Do hire a plumber unless you own a pro press kit. I could have done this myself however the value speed and peace of mind makes a good plumber worth it. It is a two person install. A friend has the AO Smith version and it is too noisy. I don’t think of this as a payback period although I will see a refund of $400 from my utility company and a $300 fed tax credit this year. I see this as cost avoidance at 200am on a weekend if I waited any longer.

I would definitely recommend this product. The very 1st day I got it the results was absolutely impressive. I had hot water in one hour. can you believe that? Plus a key important feature was the fact that since I live in Florida and you know it's hot in Florida My garage was surprisingly cooler Then what it normally is. So my advice to you if you are in the market for a new water heater this is the one you need to get if you live in a warm environment In order to take advantage of all the benefits that it has benefits daddy has. If you live up North then this may not be the one for you Remember is sucks in the heat from outside releasing cool air out to wherever you have this water heater installed. But if you live up North they have a remedy for that and that is duckwork In order to blow the cooler out of your house.

I am a homeowner who generally does all my own maintenance and installation of appliances, HVAC, building skills. These are my impressions after having it for 3 months. Pros: The heater was a very easy install. I connected it up to PEX plumbing and had it running within 2 hours. The app is a nice feature although I hardly mess with it, you can easily adjust the heater remotely or physically on the unit with a nice display. Cons: It does put off white noise I would estimate as loud as a microwave. My unit is in the middle of the house so you can definitely hear it when it runs but I am not annoyed by the white noise. The heater produces condensate (water from the heat pump). This requires drain access of some sort. While I don’t have a drain in the room I have plumbed this to my water softener system. The heater had an intake and exhaust which cannot be blocked. I have it very close to a wall and it’s almost an issue. The heater wasn’t in stock and took 30 days for it to be delivered. If this unit isn’t in stock, don’t expect it in a hurry.

Will pay for itself I hope
First impressions: It came well packaged, delivered by a trucking company. Installation was done by a licensed plumber. The LCD display is hard to read looking at the same level, you must look at it from slightly below or the display is unreadable. I finally got the app working after several attempts, somehow it was working with lots of great information and abilities the day after installation. The heat exchanger is quiet and it acts like an air conditioner in my garage, nice cool dehumidified air This hybrid type of water heater is not designed for small enclosed spaces, it needs lots of airspace to function properly, read the manual for details. The low energy usage is the biggest reason I bought this model. If you compare estimated annual costs of this system to an all electric, it pays for itself in 3 years or less.

            Decent water heater BUT
I'll have to admit, I was super excited when we purchased this water heater and had it installed. It worked great from November to March. This month we have been receiving error codes every afternoon. EcoNet Alert - A005 Heat Pump Water Heater Gen 5 Compressor Shutdown: Discharge Temp High and a Hardware Alarm. The unit itself is set to Energy Saver mode. I have called Rheem twice and still to do this no one can give me an answer to what's wrongs. The installer isn't familiar with the units, so thats also a dead end. I was told this unit works efficiently between 40-145 degrees. Yet once the outside temperature nears 70 degrees we seem to get these errors. Any help from Rheem would be greatly appreciated.

              Noisy
I do believe there would be a significant cost savings over the long term, but we will likely be paying a plumber to move it. The unit sits in our garage, but we can hear it through about half the house. The noise is not just fan noise which would be ok, but there is a definite hum.

                great efficient water heater
been running this hybrid 50 gal for 10days now. according to the app energy use is super impressive . with 3 people each taking one shower per day this unit on eco mode os using about 2.5 kw in each 24 hr period. used 27kw in 9 days thats 3$ in electricity. on that note its awesome verse a standard 4500watt unit. little confused on why the water input port is at almost the front of the unit and the hit output is about 45 degrees to the left of it makes no sence to me. made install harder as trying to put it in spot witout running a bunch of piping the should have been adjacent to each other on the side or rear. the fan does put out cold air so keep that in mind. prob be great in the summer. i love the wifi app for phone. very easy to use.

My first review wasn't good due to receiving a defective unit. I've now have the second water in service for three weeks and it is working great. The heater, set at 126, is providing adequate amounts of hot water. I'm impressed with the low electric usage. According to the ECONet app it has used less than 10Kwh over the last 6 days. Of course there is only one person using hot water in my house so that helps. So far, I'm very pleased with the water heater. I'm hoping it will prove to be a reliable unit and a good investment. Time will tell.

This is great water heater with only one thing that's really upsetting
The water heater works as expected, installation is not complicated (only it weights more than standard water heaters). But I'm giving one start to this item because I set water heater mode to "Heat Pump", and still it's engaging resistance heating elements that are using 3Kw+ of energy. Causing huge power consumption. I would expect that heater would run the only heat pump in "Heat Pump" mode.

Bought this to replace a GE Geospring hybrid water heater that was about 10 years old. Only had the water heater installed for a few weeks now. Installed the water heater myself. Everything went smoothly except for 3 things. 1st, when the manufacturer installed the automatics shut off value, it leaked, this was Rheem's connection, not mine. I was able to tilt the water heater back a bit while tightening the value about an 1/8 of a turn. It ended up stopping the leak. The 2nd issue was that in the process of switching out the water heater, some water got on the floor. Well, this water heater has a automatic shut off vale when it detects water on the floor, so the automatic shut off kept closing. There doesn't seem to be an override on the display on the water heater itself. This brings me to the 3rd issue, I had some trouble setting up the app. I could not get it to work on my android phone at first and so I tried my wife's iphone. I got it to work on the iphone and them my android app started to work. There was a shut off value override in the app. It would have been nice to have an override on the water heater itself. Overall, I'm happy with the water heater. Hopefully I won't have any issues for a long time. I currently have the condensation drain just draining into a bucket. I'm contemplating whether to drill a hole in my wall for the condensation drain.

My plumber had never put one of these in before, so it took him awhile, but he got it. We have had it a couple months now, and really like it. It has very good capacity for hot water and we keep it about 112°. The only thing I don't like is when I put it in vacation mode, it doesn't stay there. It switches back to normal. So I just turn it down as low as it will go. The app is also pretty worthless. It also does not keep it at whatever I change it to. But other than that I am extremely happy with it! If I could figure out how to fix those issues, I would give it 5 stars.

Best home efficiency investment ever! Replaced a past end-of-life oil-fired 50 gallon water heater that burned a gallon a day ($2.00) for domestic hot water with a new 65 gallon Proterra that consumes LESS THAN 2 kWh ($0.35). Finding the right installer was important, but the unit went in easily. Minting savings as I review this!

Have had unit for about two weeks and it works perfectly. Bought partly because it fit perfectly in the tight space where my electric unit had been due to diameter being the same. Would have liked 60 gallon version but it would not fit. Have been running it in heatpump mode only, instructions are a little confusing as it says the most efficient mode is hybrid mode and app keeps asking me to switch, but that is false. In heat pump only mode it is most efficient but some might have problems with recovery as heatpump only is slow to recover. We only have two people in the home so there is no problem with two showers and dishwasher and washing machine. Energy usage is at or below the estimated $104 in electric per year versus the same DOE sticker on my old electric which was $565 a year. The only thing I don't like is both the display on the unit and the app show the setpoint temperature but not the actual temperature, but not a big deal. The data from the app is very useful. I have the unit installed in my Florida garage. That area is quite warm in the summer so I expect it to use even less energy then, and the unit will also provide some cooling of the garage. Those in a northern climate may have to use the hybrid mode as the incoming water temperature is probably much lower and this size unit might not be big enough in just heatpump mode especially in the winter.

The Rheem heat pump water heater works great right from the install I have a utility room that gets a little warm because of the radiant floor heating. When I read that this water heater was a heat pump I knew it was a good fit for my situation. Installation was easy the start up was easy and has been working great for a couple weeks.it also cools down the utility room. Only problem I have been having is the app for your phone will not link up but I need to call I am probably doing it wrong but when hooked up I can monitor daily use and energy usage. Can't wait to watch my energy savings...

MISLEADING SIZE ACTUALLY ONLY 45 GAL
The actual tank capacity of this hot water tank is only 45 Gallons. Say so on side of it under energy ratings. The way the do it is advertise it as 50 gallons nominal. Definition of nominal: 1. in name only; · 2. minimal in comparison

Setup is mostly like a regular heater. So far I'm running in the engery saver mode and my basement is staying nice and cool. I may setup a vent to dump the cool air outside during the winter months. First full month was 91 kwh and second month will probably be a little higher since it's at 87 Kwh and there is 7 days left. Usually we average between 2 and 4 Kwh per day. There are 4 of us here and we work at home so water gets used all the time. I believe I should save between 20 and 30 dollars a month compared to my old water heater. App works pretty good too.

I haven't owned this product long enough to comment on reliability. I previously owned an older version of this product, which failed after six years. Rheem replaced it under warranty. The new unit appears to be of much higher quality, and I hope that whatever caused my earlier unit to fail has been corrected. The newer unit was more expensive; I had to pay and additional $380. It is very quiet, not louder than a refrigerator. It is amazingly efficient. It draws only 350 watts! You can select modes of operation via Wi-Fi. If you expect high demand, you can combine resistive heat with the heat pump. You can disable it while on vacation.

not for everyone - you need soundproofing or enclosed area away from house
I have never been so excited about a product and so disappointed once it was installed. I suspected it was gimicky and it is. You will never use the hybrid portion because your wife will not put up with the noise. I purchased this instead of using storage tank on oil furnace. I thought furnace would be too loud (52db for System 2000). Sure, I would accept the noise of a low CFM fan, but that's not what you get, you'll get a high-pitched and low pitch whine (it changes if you push on control panel, showing just bad design, vibrating parts and its not even the fan itself perhaps). measured 75db from 10-12 inches. So if you don't mind a sound as loud as a vacuum cleaner running in your house, 24/7 for hot water and you were looking forward to getting a divorce soon then go ahead buy this thing.

This hybrid saves over $400 a year in energy use, will pay for itself in less than 5 years. It also helps cool my garage while saving me that money.
I installed this 80 gallon Rheem Hybrid Smart water heater myself 189 days ago (April 10, 2020.) I have been so impressed with how little energy it uses. Using the app on my phone I can see a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly energy consumption. I can also change the water temperature and turn off my water heater where ever I am in the world using my phone. Of course since I live in Florida and my garage is usually about 88 degrees or hotter, this hybrid is able to convert the heat in the ambient air to use for heating my water, and when it is doing that it blows out cool air into the garage, which is now around 10 degrees cooler which helps a lot when I have to do any work in the garage. I can't wait to see how much energy it will use in the next 6 months. I would imagine the colder climate it is the less efficient it is, but if you live in the south I recommend this as a no brainer. My old water heater energy-guide sticker showed an annual energy cost of $544, the hybrid water heater energy-guide sticker showed $161 a year both are using 12 cents per kilowatt hour. If you look at my usage so far for 189 days (See Photo) I have used a total of 241.45 kilowatt hours that if you double that number to show one years use, my usage would be about 483 kilowatt hours per year. If you multiply 483 hours at an average of 12 cents per kilowatt hour it comes to $57.96 for the year, which is less than $5 a month for 80 gallons of hot water. If you subtract the Hybrid water heater annual cost of $58 from my older water heater annual cost of $544 it would mean this saves me about $486 a year, or after 4 years it would save me $1944, more than I paid for the water heater and all the parts to install it. and it would have 6 years still to go while under warranty. And I have noticed my electric bill compared to last year has dropped about $30 to $40 a month since I installed it. If my next house doesn't have a hybrid, I will replace it right after I move in, because I know it will pay for itself in a few years. Buying a regular water heater will save you $500 to $1000 that day. But if you look at annual cost for both water heaters for the next 10 years and add the purchase price you will see which one really costs more. My old one would cost $5400 in energy plus $1000 for the water heater. Compare that to the energy sticker for the hybrid which equals about $1610 in energy plus $2000 for the hybrid. $6400 minus $3610 and this cost at least half of the regular water heater. I have never installed a water heater before, I watched a few YouTube videos and decided I would try it myself. It took me about 1 hour to drain and remove the old water heater, and about 4 hours to modify my plumbing to attach to this new configuration. If you look at the pictures it shows the old water heater pipes cold and hot were on the top of my old water heater, where the Hybrid heater has the Hot in the front a few inches above the ground and the cold water connected on the side a few feet above the ground. I decided to use metal flexible tubing so the next time I replace it it will be easy to disconnect and be able to slide the water heater in and out as needed. I will check back next April to update this review after a year.

Exactly 1 year in and savings are exactly what was advertised...$400
I installed this amazing 50 gallon water heater myself 1 year ago today. I attempted to have it installed by a local plumber, but the 3 I contacted were not familiar with hybrid water heaters and tried to talk me into buying a conventional style. One actually said, "Why would you spend twice as much for something that's going to last half as long?" That's when I decided to buy the PEX tubing and Shark Bite fittings I would need to complete the install myself. It wasn't very difficult at all. I even cut a hole through the wall to draw consistent 70+ degree air from my laundry room. This helps in the winter since mine is installed in my garage. Well after 1 year, it has consumed a total of 1003 kWh of electricity. At 11.4c/kWh, this is about $115. My old unit was estimated @ $514/year, so this water heater has a ROI of 4 years! It'll even pay for the next one before the 10 year warranty expires. I've played with the heating modes a bit and found "Energy Saving" works best for me. It will automatically kick in the electric heating elements as needed to prevent you from running out of hot water, which WILL happen with rare high demand situations. I would highly recommend this Rheem Heat Pump Water Heater to anyone who's considering replacing their unit, as well as those who aren't.
