          NOT EnergyStar Certified
This is a wonderful appliance - but I feel cheated. The 'energy guide' from this page shows the EnergyStar logo. The Manufacturer web page shows 'EnergyStar rated'. However, this particular model XE80T10HD50U1 is not certified. Its (slightly older?) kissing cousin - XE80T10HD22U0 is. This caused my NHsaves / Eversource EFI Rebate to be refused. I had expected a $600 for the 80 gallon model, but did not get it (thus far) making the whole value proposition completely different. It will probably also not qualify for the Federal tax credit. Now it will take many more years for return on investment, and knowing that I would have look around for alternative instead of buying this.

            Best Water Heater We've Owned
Over 18 years of marriage this is the best water heater we have ever owned. We have two dishwashers, two washers and dryers and four bathrooms. The six of us heavily use hot water and we have rarely run out. Smart programming is excellent and saves us a bundle of money with schedules that meet our needs. I would absolutely purchase this water heater again.

I've been using this for 2 years now, and we would buy it again in a heartbeat. Initial install took a little extra work to plumb in the condensate drain lines, and the unit is significantly taller than my old 80gal. Performance is great, it heats water up much faster and keeps it warm longer (when not on). Only gripe is that this should have included the wifi module instead of making you buy an add-on after spending this much for a water heater.

Even though Rheem claims a UEF of 3.50/3.55, which surpasses the >2.0 for the federal tax credit, Rheem refuses to offer the required certificate for claiming the $300 tax credit. Countless e-mails back and forth; their final statement was, "I'm unable to answer the specifics of why this model is not included on the list of qualifying models on the Manufacturers Certificate." So either their claim on the UEF is false or they did not qualify this unit for some other apparently unknown reason. I would recommend going with the other brand if you would like the $300 tax credit. The system is pretty loud when the heat pump is functioning. We can hear is running from the basement while we are on the middle floor. Other than that, it heats the water.

I don't give praise lightly but this is an awesome water heater and I love it. Its a smart machine and it has several easy-to-set modes to get it to perform however you like. Has vacation mode, heat pump only mode, electric element only mode, energy saver mode, and high recovery mode (runs both heat pump and elements at the same time). I also love the excellent status information it gives you about what is running or not, bottom tank temperature and top of tank temperature, lets you know exactly what is going on. Only problem was the difficult installation. I installed mine in a utility closet, so I had to install ducting for intake and exhaust air. Water inlets and outlets were in different position than old standard electric water heater so had to reconfigure my plumbing, too. Was quite a bit of work, but well worth it. Best situation for installing this water heater would be in an attached garage, so no venting or ducting required then. I love this water heater, performs well.

From a user experience standpoint, the most poorly engineered appliance I have ever installed in my house. The water inputs are on the front of the unit, requiring a complicated snakes-nest of pipes over the top; but they can't go RIGHT over the top, because the filter has to be removed and cleaned every now and then. The drain comes out the front, too, and so does that overflow safety valve. You can't install it backward because there's an LCD readout. So it's a nightmare if you're trying to replace an old-school electric water heater with this thing. If it's going in your garage and you don't care, fine, it's a peach. If it's replacing a water heater inside your home, don't do it. I wish I hadn't.

                  Response from RheemDec 5, 2017
                  Hi finnzo,

Thank you for purchasing the Rheem Performance Platinum 80-Gallon Hybrid Electric Water Heater and for taking time to leave feedback on this unit. After a lot of research, the design plan for this unit was to minimize clearance needed / required while at the same providing ease of serviceability by having everything in front of the heater. This unit was also designed with a duct ready feature that allows the unit to be installed inside the home in a closet with a minimum space requirement, a huge improvement from the previous generations.

We hope you are enjoying the many features and benefits if this heater, if you have any questions or concerns please call Rheem Technical Support at 866-279-4566 between the hours of 7 A.M. and 7 P.M. CST and one of our experienced analysts will be happy to assist you.

                  Thank you,
                  Jennifer rheem

Only had the unit for three weeks, but so far so good. It was easy to install and except for a dent in the top from shipping it is a nice looking unit. I saved $200 by ordering online. It took a few weeks to ship it but My heater was still functioning so to save cash I ordered on line and shipped it to the local store. I haven't gotten a electric bill since its been installed and hoping this will be a huge difference from our old unit.

It looks very nice. The hook ups are on the front, so it's hard to make it look clean. Because of the hook up locations, it takes more time than average to hook up. The heat pump is laud. The control board is nice, you can set the temperature and the mode you prefer. 12 year warranty is a plus. Your room will get cold on heat pump mode. It is actually an air conditioner. Not bad for the summer but I keep it the heat pump mode off during the winter. For some reason, braided hoses kept leaking for my application (I tried 3 different types) so I had to use copper pipes throughout with unions. I installed a pan to catch any water. Added 2x3 under the unit to promote air flow underneath. I also added a water filter system with shut off valves on both sides. The clear line is for my humidifier. I also made a cabinet to protect and cover the pipes (not shown). I used Pex for the condensation lines rather than plain tubing that get moldy. Make sure to keep the drains separate from each other, otherwise it defeats it's purposes. Because of the laud compressor, I do not recommend this unit in a home. Maybe a garage or an unfinished basement. Don't forget about the tax credits and the electrical rebates!

Initial Review after one week of operation
After researching on-line about hybrid water heaters I decided on the Rheem 50 gallon unit. As expected no hybid water heater had perfect ratings. I have had Rheem water heaters (natural gas) in the past and they performed well. I replaced a natural gas water heater with this hybrid. I installed the water heater myself in my basement which has an average ambient temperature of 68 degrees. I was pleased with the ease of the installation. With the unit set to heat water only with the heat pump, hot water was ready in less than an hour. I was happy with that result. The unit has a touch screen to make adjustments to the operation. This makes it very easy to change the temperature or mode of heating and I really appreciate it. The unit is also wi-fi ready. To enable a wi-fi connection you must purchase an additional component for approximately 49.99. I choose not to purchase it. After 10 days of operation I am very pleased with the unit. Recovery time after showering is acceptable even using the heat pump only mode. There are only two people in our household so larger families may have longer recovery times or choose to use a faster recovery mode of operation. I will update this review after six months of operation.
