Questions & Answers

Can this unit be installed in a crawl space underneath the house? The crawl space is not insulated.

Asked by: JW
As long as this unit is not exposed to freezing temperatures or water when it rains, I don't see a reason why you would not be able to be installed in a crawl space.

What's the Annual Fuel Utilization? At least 95?? - for $150 IRS money..
Asked by: NIck
To: ' Nick' - Re:{average fuel utilization efficiency? ....at least 95?} NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! - - - try 0.68, instead ....that requested [ 95 ] number of extreme, maximum efficiency is reserved strictly for Condensing Boilers with additional heat exchangers for "wringing-out" the very last BTU from the otherwise very HOT exhaust gases!......domestic hot water heaters with this condensing design are on-the-market BUT relatively brand-new, available herein from home depot.com, offered by Westinghouse & Others.....much, much more costly, as well....be prepared to contend with that very-acidic drain liquid, too....eli2

How far does the gas control unit extend away from the outside of the cylinder? I have a tight closet, and this is important -- and nowhere do the specs even mention this depth.
Asked by: DIY5088
eli2: I appreciate your answer. Yes, I'm in CA, replacing an 20+ yr old original water heater. The earthquake bracing was never installed -- a coil of the original metal tape for that purpose is lying on the floor. Although I'm in a low-quake part of the state, I plan on installing proper bracing. I'm also in the ultra-low NOx area, too. My "closet" is on the outside of the house, has plenty of width, about 18" on both sides. It's only the front to back space that is limited. A copper water line extends horizontally across the back, protrudes 1.5" from the back wall. The door to the closet opens to the outside, is properly vented for a water heater enclosure. The Instructions/Assembly in the "Info & Guides" section shows that zero clearance is required on the rear and sides, and 3" in the front. Since there is no mention of the space required for the gas control unit in the specs, and no mention on the gas control unit's dimensions on the outside of the main heater cylinder, I am left to assume that the 3" in front requirement MUST be the space required for the gas control unit. Thanks again.

Does the diameter of 23 inches include attachments or is this for the tank only?

Are there legs on this water heater and if so what is their height?
Asked by: RM
To; 'RM' - Re:{..diameter of 23" includes 'attachments?'}... Not quite certain "IF" there might be a worry of your Heater Closet being too small??? ....once the new Heater has been removed from the shipping carton, that's ALL there is, since those Controls must be oriented for both Installation as well as future Servicing. Your 'Equipment Closet' must have sufficient size to permit the licensed Installer to connect both the natural gas as well as those (2) water lines atop the Tank. AND, the included safety Tempt / Pressure Relief Valve will need plumbing to an appropriate sewer connection with hard plumbing {metal, never plastic}. So, any Enclosure will have to be sufficiently-larger.{...than 23"}....eli2

Performance Platinum 50 Gal. Tall 12 Year 36,000 BTU ENERGY STAR Ultra Low NOx Natural Gas Water Heater is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 250.

Hello. For the past 6-9 months I have been experiencing some issues with this Rheem water heater Model Number:M461412891 Serial Number:XG50T12DU36U0 MFG. DATE; 13NOV2014 I had a local licensed plumber install this water heater from Home Depot in end of November or beginning of December of 2014. For some odd reason I need to constantly reset it by turning it off electrically as it has a 110 plug on it for something. I guess this is for the Honeywell LED gas control valve, which seems to be the weakest link. I do this for about a minute then turning it back on from the switch on the front. This sometimes corrects the issue as it will cycle through and I hear it beeping then igniting then firing up to heat most times but not always. The LED has a constant blink heartbeat that gives no indication of any problems detected. I do this as it won't always fire up and reheat on it's own and once we all realize the water in the house is lukewarm to cold we now know the water heater needs to be reset. Is this due to some faulty part you think or is there another reason you may be aware of? My guesses are, the Honeywell gas control valve and or the flame sensor rod. I have since learned that a lot of other plumbers use nothing but Bradford-White or A.O Smith water heaters as most of them tell me Bradford-White and A.O. are the best. I am sorry to say most plumbers do not care for Rheem at all as a brand. But as I spent a whole lot of money on parts (this 12 year Rheem over $800) and labor $325 and I am thinking the plumbers may just be biased as they may just be brand loyal. I do sincerely hope Rheem makes a great product in your opinion as well as the opinions of all that work for Rheem. If you need further information and or explanation, please email me back at your earliest convenience. THE ABOVE EMAIL is from August of 2016 I had to call Rheem to follow up and as they only warranty parts so they sent me another Honeywell LED replacement gas control valve. I had that installed by a licensed plumber at my expense. ($150) MY LATEST CONTACT EMAIL to Rheem on Feb 09, 2017 via their website an so far as of March 18, 2017 no RESPONSE as this terrible water heater is doing the same thing like before, now for over a month. I am writing this review as I tried to call today but alas they are not working weekends like I am. I am so dissatisfied with this inferior product you cannot even imagine. Feb 09,2017 email below; I currently have this 50 gallon gas Rheem water heater from Home Depot, not even 3 years old and it seems Rheem is one of the worst brands I have yet to encounter... My issue is that we have to reset the electronic pilot light nearly all the time as the ignitor will not fire until reset and this is if we only realize if we lack hot water. This silly water heater requires a 110 outlet to work, I hope the new ones have no such need. Rheem has last year already sent me another Honeywell valve that I had replaced at my expense and it is doing the same exact thing as before. The model# is XG50T12DU36U0 and serial#M461412891, MFG. DATE,13NOV2014. Rheem Performance Platinum 50 Gal. Tall 12 Year 36,000 BTU High Efficiency Ultra Low NOx Natural Gas Water Heater-XG50T12HN36U0 - The Home Depot 1. What are my options? 2. Is there a non Honeywell LED electrical gas valve available? I think the ones from years ago even with a standing pilot were far superior to this problematic to sophisticated new type... I am am not very happy with needing a 110 electrical outlet for a gas water heater, I hope that is not needed for all new water heaters as once we lose power we also lose the ability to heat water via the Home Depot Rheem. END OF EMAIL to Rheem on Feb 09, 2017. Since there has been no response from Rheem via their website I am ready for a refund. I AM NOW READY FOR A FULL REFUND AS I AM ALREADY IN CONTACT WITH LOCAL LISCENSED PLUMBERS FOR A REPLACEMENT.I WILL NOT CONSIDER RHEEM EVER.

Home Depot would not remove, pick it up and exchange it for another one. Cost for my plumber to uninstall it and re-install another one was $400. Rheem sent out repair person who had to order a new control module and new damper. We had to be without hot water for 4 days while waiting for parts. Repair person said this model is notorious for failure. He recommended a standard, non electronic water heater with pizzo electric igniter. It would be cheaper in the long run to spend monthly on a pilot light than to pay for high labor and parts costs for electronics that will break long before the water heater rusts out.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from My previous Rheem manufactured water heater broke just 4 years... My previous Rheem manufactured water heater broke just 4 years after installation is a red-flag toward any Rheem's water heater; but waiting a week for replacement parts was not an option. This water heater is easy to set up, the electrical plugged-in starter which eliminate pilot light is especially helpful but time will tell if this heater will last til the end of its warranty period. As of now, I cant say Rheem is trustworthy quality wise; and my experience with Rheem while trying to get replacement parts for the defective heater was not helpful either. No, I do not recommend this product or any other Rheem products. Just because they are not very helpful when their product are defective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from recovery time is better After 15 years with our old water heater and running out of hot water more often than I thought we should have, we looked around and found the Rheem platinum series. Although the new heater is a few inches larger in diameter than our old heater, our contractor did a terrific job of installing it. We now have loads of hot water plus the peace of mind of being able to lower the temp with the app when we've forgotten to do so before a vacation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great features on paper but cannot be trusted I bought mine a month ago. It works fine but one day it gave a lot of cracking sound. We had to call PGE guy at 12 midnight because the sound was so much, that we first thought, someone is bursting fire-crackers. The sound has subsided by the time the PGE guy came. He found no issue, but he only checked a few safety valves. Something is seriously wrong with my water heater and it was expensive to have it installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My second from Rheem, and both are working great. Had this installed about a month ago to replace a very old tank heater. The installation was painless (I didn't do it), but I was confident the Rheem would work well, because I have one installed about two years ago in a vacation house, and the water heater has been functioning flawlessly. So far, the new one is working great too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This unit is working as I expected it too! The water heater has been in operation for two weeks. It is operating flawlessly. Purchased the WiFi option. Wife loves the ability to change the temp setting. I wish there was some place to view the actual water temp not just the set point. Something to consider!

The installer said he preferred Rheem over many other brands because they were more reliable (he didn’t have anything to do with the purchase). I like that I can change mode (scheduled vacation) and the temperature from my iPhone.
