Directions say 30 amp circuit breaker recommended. I have 25 amp. Will I be okay or am I going to be constantly tripping the breaker?
Asked by: Paine
Breakers are not designed to protect the device they power but the wire that feeds them. They are designed to trip when the current running through the wire is too much, it is in danger of over-heating, causing a fire. The issue is your wire. National Electric Code specifies #10 copper wire is rated for 30 amperes (with a built in safety margin of 20%). As long as you have #10 wire the unit will not over-heat the wire, start a fire and you can use UP TO a 30 AMP breaker to protect the wire (the circuit from over-heating). You can use any SMALLER ampere breaker --- your 25 AMP breaker, if you wish, so long as it does not trip, keep disconnecting your device. If you have smaller WIRE you have a problem. You DO NOT WANT TO DO is put a breaker that, for example, trips at 30 AMPs on wire that catches fire at, for example, 20 AMPs. If your wire is good you can keep the 25 AMP breaker - provided it does not trip the water heater in normal use - which it probably won't - it draws little over 20 AMPs.

what is the voltage rating?

Asked by: alex
240 volts, should use the same breaker and size conductors that you would use for an ordinary electric water heater. At least 30 amps, If ever used with an DC - AC inverter, inverter should be upsized generously and must be a full sine wave inverter NOT a modified sine wave inverter. It could theoretically be used with a smaller inverter if it only ran on the compressor, but than you rely on correct configuration or unwire the heating elements, and that is for a handyman who knows what he is doing.

Does this allow me to set time ranges when it shouldn't run? I am on a time of use plan and electricity from 1-8pm costs 3x as much as it costs during the rest of the day so being able to limit energy use during that time is important. ~7 cents/kWh during offpeak instead of ~21 cents/kWh during peak
Asked by: Blake
Not available for this unit. What you can do is interrupt power supply by adding on a timer control that also comes with pin settings that allows you to have multiple setbacks on 24 hr.

Was very pleased to see the newest version has wifi built in and no extra hardware or subscription is required. Just download the app, connect to the wifi coming from the hot water heater to configure it, enter the password for the regular wifi, and then let everything reset and it worked. Very nice to see the very low power consumption in a daily, hourly or monthly graph. While I was changing out the old hot water heater, I added a 28" drain pan, a pressure tank, and earthquake straps that had never been installed in my house. Seems like cheap / simple protection and the pressure tank helps avoid high pressure spikes. This thing requires a bunch of connections - 30A 240VAC electrical connection, cold water in, hot water out, a condensate drain line, a line for the overpressure (T&P) valve (which I pointed into the drain pan), and then the drain pan line to the floor drain. It shows a lot of status information on the screen - I showed some examples.

I have a family with 2 Audits and 2 kids that take long showers. I tried to use ECO Mode but the recovery was too slow for 4 consecutive showers. In High Demand mode, hot water recovery was fast. During my vacation I left my water heater in High Demand mode. The daily kWh consumption is between .70 and .80 per day with no usage. My average daily kWh used is about 5. This water heater definitely saves money compared to my GE electric only water heater. The best reason for going Hybrid is the AC! My water heater is located in the garage, and now I have free AC/Dehumidifier in my garage. While not substitute for real AC, it uses a lot less energy than say a wall unit and does drop my garage temp 5+ degrees and remove the humidity which makes the garage feel much crisper. If I need more AC, I can put on the water heater in heat pump only mode; however, heat pump recovery is slower than electric. The install is easy. I used PEX pipes and Shark Bite.

Although I have had this unit for only a few days, the drop in electric usage is amazing. In my case, I replaced a 15 year old 80 gallon water heater with this hybrid. To keep a higher hot water capacity, I had a tempering valve installed. This combines hot and cold water to create water at whatever temperature you need. I set the valve to 120 degree output, and can increase the hot water temperature to higher values if the demand increases due to visitors, with the tempering valve ensuring no one is scalded. This unit uses less than 1/3 the power of the old electric resistance water heater, Living in Florida, we use a lot of air conditioning. The unit was installed in a closet with vented doors. After extracting heat from the air, this unit blows out cold air, which means the air conditioner does not need to work as hard. And this hot water heater also lowers interior humidity. It is like a free dehumidifier. Combined with a recently installed SEER 16 Rheem air conditioner, the savings in electricity are just great.

Had it delivered "over the threshold" into a back door near the installation site for small extra charge. The Home Depot installation bid was absurdly expensive, so I ordered the unit myself and once delivered, had it installed by a competent plumber in my community - easy and quick. While some plumbers warned that Rheem would blame any malfunction on the plumber, Rheem confirmed the unit does NOT need to be installed by a Rheem-certified plumber and they will honor the warranty. We're getting plenty of hot water in heat pump mode. The technology is well tested and the savings substantial - the extra cost for this unit compared to a conventional heater pays for itself in a few years, and the reduction in energy use cuts emissions. Highly recommended. No rebates from my utility, but there was a $250 price drop at HD that went off and on over 6 weeks, so watch the price and order when discounted if you can.

I was glad to get a 65 gallon tank, as most other options come in only 50 or 80 gallon versions. One important note to those buying the new Gen 4 models is that WiFi is built directly into the water heater unit, meaning that you do NOT need to purchase the EcoNet module separately. I had no difficulty setting up the WiFi connection. Also, the app (I am using an iPhone) now allows you to track energy usage on a daily, monthly, and/or yearly basis. Other to dos for installation: i) an expansion tank is needed, ii) I used a thick yoga mat as my "vibration isolation kit", and iii) I installed wide-spacing louver inserts that I purchased online into the oddly shaped door to the room with the water heater. The unit is quiet, but not silent, and it does lower the temperature significantly (as well it should if it is working). It heated the water swiftly even on "Heat Pump Only" mode, and no problems with the installation. I haven't had it very long, so no word on reliability or durability.

While this unit does tout 4x energy savings (I have not calculated it yet), that too comes with a price. Hot water recovery is very slow in either of the two efficiency modes (Heat Pump, Energy saver). In either of those two modes, if we shower our two children at 8:00, there is barely enough hot water at 10:30 for one adult to shower, so the other is stuck with a cold water shower. Therefore we have to DAILY change to High Demand mode just before the kids shower, and hope to switch it back to an energy saving mode afterwards. I could accept this if Rheem would have provided capability for a programmable schedule. You can't claim 4x energy savings over older models if the throughput is not the same.

It is now March 2019, and I wanted to update my previous positive review. Over the two years prior to installing this water heater our electric bills averaged $247.16 per month. For the 25 months after installation our electric bills have averaged just $150.85. The average monthly savings is $96.13. So, the bottom line is that this water heater completely paid for itself in just 25 months. I am impressed!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Still unresolved This is an update to my previous review in January. As many of the recent reviews state installation may be easy and it may lower the electric bill but it does not provide adequate hot water, it makes our basement freezing cold and it’s impossible to regulate the inconsistency of the temperature fluctuations. A representative did reach out to us to tell us a technician would be calling to come and assess the problem. They did call only to tell us they did not have an authorized technician within 30 miles. We do not live in a rural area and we have a major city nearby. Furthermore they told us we need to find a technician and they would allow a $125. reimbursement for the service. Not only do I recommend not buying this unit I also recommend you put effort into finding another manufacturer and one that has authorized technicians nearby in case something like this occurs. Needless to say I am still having trouble with this and I have been unable to locate someone to fix this new water heater.
