Questions & Answers

Can this be converted to propane gas instead of liquid propane?

Asked by: Geff
Propane gas is the vapor from liquid propane. This water heater, like a gas grill, works off the vapor from your LP tank. So to answer your question, no "conversion" is necessary for this water heater to run on "propane gas".

When measuring height, are you measuring top of tank, where water lines atratch, or top of vent cap? 60.25?

Asked by: Wynotme307
When measuring for 60.25in. You are measuring from the bottom to the top of the tank, (where the water lines attach).

Customer Reviews

Performance Plus 40 Gal. Tall 9 Year 36,000 BTU Liquid Propane Tank Water Heater is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 1480.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pilot/Ignition Switch Goes Out Periodically I got this heater 12 months ago and have had AT LEAST 10 occurrences where the pilot light has inexplicably gone out and I have had to go up in the attic and re-ignite it with the switch. We only find out when we turn on the water (shower, kitchen sink, etc) and it's totally cold. So frustrating! This started happening about two months after we got it and is totally unpredictable. Sometimes we'll go a week or two with it being fine or sometimes several months. There are no environmental factors that seem to be involved and the heater set-up was checked and passed by a city inspector at installation. Weird. The heater itself works fine -- as long as the pilot light and switch don't go out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superior Performance I bought this 1 year ago and so far the performance of this gas water tank has been great. I installed the tank with the help of my nephew and it was easy to install. Draining of the old tank took about a day and remove/install took about 1 hour. I can hear when the tank's burner goes on if I am near it otherwise the tank is quiet. One major issue I have would that there is no hood over the controller to protect it from being accidentally bumped or something accidentally falling on top of it damaging the controller. Another concern I have would be how reliable is the plastic drain valve. So I rating this water heat as four stars instead of five.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perceived Quality Its about three weeks old and too early to give it an accurate review. We bought it over other brands because of its perceived quality and reviews. A negative aspect is the lack of a service manual. This was enough for me to consider another brand. I understand some different reasons for this, such as keeping business for dealers, the technology is too dangerous for the average do it your self people, and others. All people are not created equal in abilities, education, and skills. These review questioners come within a week of purchasing a product. This is much too early If you want a quality review.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from looks good,Rheem quality At first I was disappointed because of the pilot light not lighting issue that Rheem has been experiencing however I have discovered the problem and had it fixed in seconds without the thermopile kit and gasket that is being mailed out to customers to repair their units, I had mine working perfect, blue light blinking and tested my fix with relighting my pilot 10 out of 10 times and it lit first time, every time without getting into the sealed pilot and burner area and the "fix kit" that arrived a couple days after I had my unit working perfect is still in the box, not needed at all!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rheem quality and reliability Purchased a home built in 2000. It had a Rheem WH with a born-on-date of 1998. It just started leaking a very small amount last month. This puts the tank at about 19 years old with a service life of 17 years! I know the developer didn't put top-of-the-line WH in the subdivision, but 17 years out of a "cheap" tank?!?!? When it came time to choose a new tank, the choice was easy. Rheem. No question about it. BTW, I installed it myself in under 2 hours and was inspected by the city. I really like this WH.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Installed easily enough. A bit more noisy than previous 20 year old heater but noise means turbulent airflow which transfers more heat. It got me a bit worried when I looked up specs on the gas control valve and saw lots of issues but those were for an earlier version of the valve. Bottom line though, after a year of use, zero problems. We are on city water wth very minimal mineral content and I drain a few gallons off every few months to avoid any sediment buildup near the heat exchanger or thermowell (where the temperature sensor is located). The drain valve is a bit awkward but is typical of most water heaters. I use a quick connect hose coupler to allow the valve to turn while the attached hose stays stationary. It's important to open the valve enough to get a high flow and clear any sediment from around the valve seat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Warranty date I bought this unit on 1/27/17, I installed it late in February. I went to register it in early March. I found out that the warranty would start on the day that it was made (12/06/17) because I installed it myself. I contested then, and still do, that the warranty should at least start on the day I purchased it. That would be a full month later than the day it was made. I recommend your product to my son and he bought one, but that was before I found out about the warranty issue. I am not happy!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No FULL Warranty from purchase date. 3 months lost Bought this 3 months after manufacture date. They won't recognize purchase date for Warranty. I'm not that impressed with our natural gas unit. We seem to smell a 'hint' flue gas in the alcove (probably sourced from top of tank outlet to chimney). Not looking forward to junk email coming and shall stop them once they start.!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed after a year and a half of use The pilot light went out this winter. I tried to light it while following the instructions but it fails to stay lit. Neither the blue or red indicator lights come up... It has been only a year and a half since it was installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprised This water heater is 18 months old, and frankly I never paid much attention to a water heater before. The heater is impressive looking and has performed very well. My plumber just performed a yearly check and gave it high marks, there was no sign of any build up on the rod thing in the top of the tank. I am able to lower the heating control and the water is just as hot through out the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best I could find from retail store Fairly easy to install with some intermediate skill level and a friend. Replaced a GE 50 gal (made by Rheem) that I installed 17 years ago. Considering the good service out of the old one and positive data on line about Rheem, replaced it with another Rheem 50 gal nat gas. Something I think Rheem could improve on would be packaging. I had to return first purchase due to damage to tank not readily noticeable on exterior of box. Looked like it had been dropped on it's side, two dents on upper and lower part of tank. It was frustrating, it weighs 165 lbs and waisted a lot of time and effort. There appears to be no protective packing to prevent damage during transport and handling even from store to home especially if laid on side rather than in upright position. Inspect (open box) before leaving store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Efficient After our water heater from 2003 died we purchased this one and I can't believe the difference. It is very efficient and has a lot of features our old one did not have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Water Heater I was having trouble with the controls on my old water heater of 12 years. The Rheem equipment was a perfect replacement of superior quality. Very pleased with the blue led pilot indicator light. Great control system. Only regret, I waited too long to make the replacement. For tech lovers, consider the WiFi model. Kind of regret not going WiFi on mine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Install-Quiet I decided to purchase about a year ago after reading mixed reviews. I was replacing a 15 year old Rheem that came with the house, so I figured it should be OK. Most of the mixed reviews pertained to issues with the control module. I think the year I have has the updated version of the module and I have not had any problems. From everything that I read, when there was an issue with the control module, Rheem would send out a replacement free of charge. I must admit that I am always glancing at the heater when I am in the basement to make sure it is flashing blue (blue = everything is fine), I hope it lasts as long as the previous Rheem that was replaced. I actually relocated my water heater, so the new size regulation was not n issue with my install. Very straightforward install, fired right up.

I installed this Rheem hot water heater a month ago and it has performed very well. It provides plenty of hot water for showers for a family of 3, dish and clothes washing. It is easy to light. It's smaller diameter allows a better fit for the small closet space it is installed in. I have had no issues with it and I am pleased with it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk This review is not for the water heater, it is for the one that it replaced. The heater only lasted 3 1/2 years before it rusted through and started leaking. The only reason I got the same brand again is because it is the only brand natural gas water heater that I could get in my area without special ordering it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features I bought my water heater on 1/31/18, the best decision I ever made.
Date published: 2018-02-20
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Short Life This is a replacement water heater. The tank on the first Rheem started leaking in 3 years (on a 9 year warranty). The first replacement heater would not light after it was installed. To their credit, Rheem and Home Depot replaced both the failed tank heater and first replacement heater.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy hook up I installed my new water heater with ease and minimal effort. My old unit lasted twenty years, far beyond my expectations. My new Rheem is quality through in through with the end user in mind. Performance is excellent! Only one suggestion, a better description of the status light would be helpful.
Date published: 2016-11-28
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Jury is still out First one only last 22 months, it worked until the pilot light went out while we were out of town. Then continued to do so once a month until the gas control valve blew. Rheem didn't have the replacement in stock so they allowed the exchange to a new one. We shall see how long it lasts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid, very well built. I haven't had it long enough to rate it's performance. My previous water heater was a Kenmore witch had the air vent at the very bottom of the unit . Hard to keep clean. I like the blue light flashing on the control valve letting me know the unit is working fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Let's see if I still love it in a year? I like the look and color of my 40 gallon heater. I love the blinking blue light to indicate everything is okay, and the matchless pilot. Plenty of hot water on the lower setting. If you have basic skills, know a little bit about codes, it's a fun project to install. Take your time and enjoy. A brass drain valve would have been a nice upgrade. It is taller and a little wider than our old water heater so everything had to be modified. One tip would be to check inside your flue piping. It may look good on the outside but ours was very rusted on the inside. It's cheap and easy to replace. I would also shim it to sit level. The foam pipe insulators was a nice freebie. I agree that the packaging needs to be beefed up. The first one we brought home had a huge dent in the top although no box damage. We brought it right back and the salesman at Home Depot said they get about one a month like that. This dent had to be at the factory before boxing. Shame. Remember this is my first impressions as I've only had the water heater up and running since January 14, 2017. Rheem's survey is a little premature. I hope I love it in the long run and I'll post again if given the opportunity.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Already Leaking We have not had this very long and it's leaking out the top and around the top seam. I'm not a fan of any tank due to several that have given out long before their warranty. It floods our basement and creates a mess. I may try tankless next.
Date published: 2016-12-29
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality Issue --- Dielectric nipple The dielectric nipple on the hot water outlet leaked (rusted) in less than 1 year. Nipple was obviously of very poor quality. That is what the dielectric feature of this part is supposed to prevent, RUST.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rheem's Name Replacing a well known brand 9 year warrantied unit after 17 years of service - "began to leak". Would liked to have seen a metal control casewith a metal knob and a metal drain valve as "protective features".

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Broken Drain Valve out of the box I read reviews on this product before purchasing, the majority of them were good & a few read issues w/parts. I decided to take my chances & purchased anyway. After opening the box & inspecting, I noticed the lower drain valve plastic treads were cracked so draining the tank through that valve during maintenance would not be possible. The box was not damaged so it must have gotten by Quality Control prior to boxing up, assuming they have a Quality Control Dept. I called Rheem Tech Support & the gentleman was very helpful, I emailed the picture of the broken part & he offered to overnight the part & dispatch a Service Tech in the area to install it. Since this was a self install it told him that was fine, I didn't want to break what appeared to be "cheap plastic". Here's a catch, the Tech Support Rep. stated that the 2yr parts/labor warranty started at the DOM date, date of manufacturer, not the purchase date. The DOM was OCT. 2016 & purchase date JAN. 2017. I don't agree with that. My advise, if purchasing this product, ask for the newest box that particular store has (assuming you can see the DOM)! Otherwise I'very only had it in for a few days so I can't really say anything more about this product.
