The connection ports on the top, right and left side fit more installations. Collector feed and return fittings are conveniently located on the front of tank for easy installation.

AnswersI have used this water heater for over 13 years in conjunction with my solar panels on the roof. Read the description people! It is not confusing. This water heater is designed to work with solar panels and not as a standard, stand alone water heater. Whenever my Richmond fails, I am happy to know that I can get an exact replacement from Home Depot.

AnswersYes, there is an heat exchanger. In the lower half of the tank is a solar fluid inlet and outlet to the heat exchanger. This is where you connect your solar collector panels.

AnswersLiquid solar panels. It is designed to use a closed-loop glycol (anti-freeze) solar heating system. The glycol is heated in the solar panels and transfers the heat to the water in the water tank via closed-loop heat exchangers.

Very Nice Solar Hot Water Storage Tank!

I have two 3' x 8' Alten 1980 vintage solar hot water collector panels on my roof which feeds food grade glycol antifreeze to the heat exchanger on this water heater tank via a Watts circulator pump with a small expansion tank. The pump is controlled by a Mysol solar controller.
So far this winter I'm getting 120 degree water temperatures most days this February with this Richmond 80 gallon solar water tank. The insullation on this tank is very good as we recently had a two day power outage and we were able to take showers for two days even though the circulator pump was unable to run and add heat to the water. I also have not connected the electric heating element yet although I plan to in the near future.
I can see why some people have bought this water heater by accident thinking it was an electric only water heater as the box has large letters which read "80 Gallon Electric Water Heater".
This tank only has 1 heating element but that's my fault for not thinking to check. I just assume...

This tank only has 1 heating element but that's my fault for not thinking to check. I just assumed this size tank would have 2 elements. Also there are 5 drain plugs on it and it doesn't come with enough plugs for all of them. We had to run back out and buy extra plugs. Only 2 people can take a shower at a time or you will run out of hot water. We have 4 shower & 4 adults in our house so its an adjustment for us. Now that's its up & running ,so far so good.
