What good is a Ring Spotlight Cam Wired if a burglar can just walk up to it and unplug it?
Asked by: VinceLA
It’s very hard to get near this wide angle camera , without being caught on camera , and once your on camera your picture is on the cloud which no one can delete , only you. If the plug is a problem cut it off and hard wire the unit.

Can the lite be disabled?

Asked by: Steve
The light on the spotlight cam cannot be disabled. You can turn it off on the APP to not have it on all the time, but the light does come on with motion. We love this option. The light only stays on for about 30 seconds once the motion kicks it on. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Can this plug in flood light/cam be converted to a hard wired system. I mean cutting off the plug and wiring it directly to a junction box? And if so can anyone explain the process. Thank you!
Asked by: RickP
YES...That is exactly how I installed my camera. It is a basic three wire system.

Spotlight Cam Wired Outdoor Rectangle Security Camera, Black is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 86.

This is the perfect wifi security camera for our driveway gate for both day and night time use. We have installed both wired and wireless security cameras in various places around our home and garage. Recently we’ve learned through a neighborhood message board that prospective burglars are becoming more brazen and are casing out local homes in broad daylight. We decided to try out this Ring Spotlight camera and have found it to be the perfect solution to our needs. Since our driveway has a sliding electric gate, we already had a suitable electrical outlet to connect the camera to nearby and we found the installation process to be very simple and straightforward, resulting in a very discrete installation. Despite the fact that our gate is about 90 feet from our U-Verse wifi gateway, the camera connects well and provides good images and notifications although they can be a little pixelated at times which is probably due to the distance involved (Ring recommends 30’ for the best results). See the video in this review for examples of the picture quality. The Ring app works well with our Android 8 (Oreo) and Apple 5c phones and it allows a wide range of customization for the functions of the camera including creating motion zones which allows you to exclude motion from areas of the camera like the passing traffic on the street outside our home. When someone or something enters the motion zone, the camera begins recording and the Ring app sends a notification to your mobile phone or tablet. Even though we don’t have a doorbell at our gate, the Ring app has let us know that people or deliveries had arrived so that we could deal with them so it has uses that go beyond simple security. In the evenings, the camera will switch into night vision mode however if a vehicle or person enters the motion zone, the built in floodlight illuminates which provides a brightly lit view of whomever or whatever has set off the alarm. It is also useful as a motion light to light up our driveway when we got home after nightfall. The light can also be switched on and off using the Ring app. If an unwanted guest shows up, you can communicate with them through the two way speaker/microphone in the camera and your mobile phone and there is even a built in 110 decibel siren that can be activated from the mobile app if you want to scare someone away. To me the most impressive aspect of the product was the simplicity of the installation. Ring has thought of everything by including a special mount that includes a built in bubble level, a masonry drill for the wall anchors, cable clips and a very simple and straightforward set of instructions. Before you even try to mount the camera, you plug it in close to the home wifi server (we use U-Verse) and download the app and link the camera to the app and your Ring account. After this, you can take it outside, complete the mounting of the camera outdoors and switch it on and it will pair with the wifi server automatically. The power lead is about 20’ long however in our case, we had an exterior electrical junction box on our gate pillar, so I cut off the surplus cable and simply spliced the Ring power cable into the junction box with a watertight connector and some wire nuts. When you strip the cable’s outer sheath, the internal wires are colored green, black and white making it easy to join the neutral, live and ground wires properly. The power cable is even paintable if you want it to blend in more closely with your exterior décor. I’m sure that snipping the plug off the power cable probably voided the warranty but I got the installation I was looking for! I probably spent about 2 hours on the entire installation. The only gripe I have is that even on its least sensitive ‘People only’ setting, the camera can still misinterpret the movement of tree shadows in the afternoon sun on a breezy afternoon and send out false notifications. The camera comes with a 30 day subscription to Ring’s server storage system however if you don’t want to subscribe, the system still sends notifications and allows you to download them to your phone or share them within a shorter time frame much like other security camera systems. This means you can continue to use it for free which is a good thing considering its price. According to Ring’s website, the cameras come with a 12 month non-transferable warranty, so if you sell your home and the camera fails in the first 12 months, the new owner doesn’t benefit from the warranty.

I wanted to try out this camera. Installation was simply. Before installing, you set it up on your existing system. It took no time at all. It says to install it 9 feet high, but the highest I could was 7 1/2 feet. It took under ten minutes to install. I adjusted the range for both the motion and the lights via the app. I also adjusted brightness of the lights. It comes with two-way communication and a loud alarm. You can manually turn on the lights. They have great customer support. I had a question so I called at 9pm and someone answered and helped me. I'm extremely happy with the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rings new product the spotlight cam wired is a smaller footprint security camera that requires no wiring just plug in the 10 foot long cord to a receptacle and follow the instructions and your up and running. It has all the features the camera needs to operate. Two way voice, bright led lighting, siren, 1080 hd camera, motion detection, night vision. This units hooks up to your wifi and is operated via free ring app. The mounting bracket with enclosed level just takes four screws and a couple of minutes for mounting. Too easy. The camera comes with all the tools and hardware necessary for installation.

Provided that you have an outlet that is easily accessible, this camera is relatively easy to install. The picture is clear, however the lens is a very wide angle lens. You can see people in the picture but they would practically have to walk right up to the camera to be able to recognize them. My only real complaint with this camera is that the motion detection is not very sensitive. I have my camera pointing at an entry door inside that is 12 feet away from the camera, and the camera doesn't pick up the motion until you are about 3-4 feet from the camera.

Setup as always is basic, well described, and all tools are included (for most installations). Packaging is well thought out making unboxing easy. There are illustrated paper instructions in the box but the Ring app will walk you through mounting the camera, both by written text and videos. Mounting the camera consists of four screws that depend upon the surface. For my purpose I used the included drill bit to place four holes into stucco that hold screw anchors. The mounting base has a built in bubble level making hole placement easy. The camera then slips into notches in the base and a security screw holds it in place. This version of the camera is wired via a standard plug (if you want to replace a traditional wired spotlight see the floodlight cam). The cord is 20 feet long with included cable clips so you can place it in many areas. I mounted it directly next to its outlet and ended up simply wrapping the cord around its base. This camera is a step up from the prior "stick up cam" in that it has a motion-activated spotlight and audible siren. Both the light and siren can be manually activated from the app, even when viewing the live feed. Motion zones can be adjusted for both the light activation and video recording and can be altered in zone size and sensitivity. I had initial over activation due to bugs attracted to the light but was able to limit those by minor adjustments. Video feed is high resolution (assuming a stable wifi connection) and gives a wider than anticipated viewing angle. As with other Ring products all live video can be viewed without any additional charges. But if you want to view stored videos (even from just a few minutes ago) you will need to subscribe: only $3/mo or $30/yr for one device or if you have multiple you can pay $100/yr for unlimited. Well worth it. I highly recommend.

After having them for awhile, I have discovered both good and no so great issues with the cameras. The mounting is limited, there is limited travel that the camera can do. Ring tries to make up for most of it with the wide view of the camera. You must have fast Wifi and a strong signal to the camera. If not, the cameras won't work or will have issues like very slow to come up and very poor video. This can be a challenge is you own a brick home. Customer support is just fair. When you call, the tech can help with simple questions, but when comes to the more technical ones, you are out of luck. Firmware is an issue with my cameras. They don't always upgrade automatically and there is nothing in the software to force the issue. When it comes to a possible firewall issue, the support is unable to help. The information given to the consumer is limited.

While installing the second unit in another location of my house, due to weak WiFi signal, I had to reset the unit multiple times to the point it will not allow me to go forward with the connection anymore. Deep reset does not work!

My rating is low because I thought I could install this where I have an outdated wired outdoor light now. Please be aware that this security camera says WIRED; however, it cannot be wired to an existing electrical outlet. Instead it has a long cord and a plug to plug into an outdoor electrical receptacle. All anyone has to do is UNPLUG it and in my estimation is very insecure. The Ring company makes this spotlight cam where it can be used with a solar panel to keep it charged or a battery powered one which will be released in September 2017. I will wait until they, hopefully, make one that I can install in my electrical outlet.
