Ultimately this product did not work for me, but I gave it 3 stars based on the experience with Home Depot. I'm less impressed with Ring. Evidently there are two versions of the Ring Pro. I've attached two images below. I ordered the first one from another large online retailer and it worked perfectly and as instructed. I ordered the 2nd one from HD online, and could not get it to work on a 2nd door. After about 1 hour on the phone, Ring support concluded that the HD device must be defective and I returned it to HD. HD was excellent in providing me a replacement even though the "sale price" was no longer valid. They worked with me to get me a replacement at the sale price. I installed the 2nd HD unit and it displayed the same problems as the 1st HD unit. I spent more than 1 hour on the phone with Ring customer support. They sent me through 3 levels of customer support with each giving me bad advice. I'm an electrical engineer, so I could tell that the advice was scripted and not necessarily relevant to the problem. Finally, I removed the original working Ring Pro (from the large online retailer) and installed the HD Ring Pro at the same location. The HD Ring Pro still didn't work. This removed any concern that the problem was related to my internal doorbell wiring. I then installed the working Ring Pro (from the large online retailer) at the door which would not work w/ both of the Home Depot Ring Pro's. It worked fine. After further comparison, I noted that although both are Ring Pro's, the box was slightly different (large online retailer vs HD) and the 1st 4 serial numbers are different. I returned the 2nd HD Ring Pro to the local store and purchased a Ring Pro at the HD store (much more expensive and didn't include the Chime). It had the same 1st 4 serial numbers as the Ring Pro that I purchased from the large online retailer. I installed it quickly with no problems. Now both are operational. It appears that Ring has 2 versions of the Ring Pro and one must have some issues that made it not work in my environment. Ring support never mentioned this. - During installation, when the white light is supposed to be "spinning", the online HD Ring Pro's would only indicate a blue light at the top. This implies the unit needs to charge. However, after leaving it connected for >24 hours neither of the HD online Ring Pro's ever worked. I validated that the units were receiving >18V at the doorbell. The Ring support wanted me to install a new transformer which would have been a waste of time. I don't fault HD online and I did get what appears to be the "newer" model at the HD store that worked. I would recommend ensuring that you get the version in the pic below that has a serial number that starts with 3193.

The one I purchased from HD was defective and after working with customer support three times, Ring sent me another one the works perfectly. Not HD’s fault but a pain in the rear end.

The main problem is that an internet connection is absolutely mandatory. All data from the doorbell gets sent through the internet, even if both the doorbell and your phone are on the same local network, so any internet issues become the Achilles Heel of this product. Some problems: 1. There is a feature in the app call "Previews". If this is enabled, the camera transmits over 4GB per day in images/video to Ring. If this feature is enabled just once, the doorbell keeps doing this even if the features is later disabled. I found this out about 1.5 months AFTER enabling the feature when I was looking at my internet bandwidth logs on my router. By then, the Ring doorbell had uploaded over 200GB of data to Ring. 2. If the internet or goes down, Ring does not work, even if you are at home, on the same network, the doorbell can only send data to your phone if it goes from the doorbell to Ring's servers, then to your phone. i.e. no "off the grid" operation. Also, this means if Ring's servers are down, the doorbell does not work at all. 3. It really needs a ~3Mb uplink internet connection to work reasonably. If your internet is slower than 2Mb, the unit just doesn't work well at all. Other than those flaws, the picture quality is reasonable as is the sound. The passive IR detection helps to filter out false motion (blowing leaves) from human motion. Appear to be robust to direct sunlight (although it does cause false triggers for motion detection) To see motion alerts, a paid subscription is required. How could this product be made better? 1. Record video directly on the device for playback from the device instead of having to go through the Ring servers. This would avoid subscription fees so Ring is unlikely to do this. 2. Have Ring communicate directly to the phone when the phone is at home to reduce latency of notification, improve bandwidth, and improve reliability. Note that recently, Ring has recently been acquired by Amazon and they filter the reviews there so that only positive ratings get posted. As a result, the data is skewed towards more positive reviews.

First, great idea. Love the concept. Second, there are several updates (years) before it actually works to consumers expectations. It has connectivity issues with the WiFi (Comcast hard wired modem directly downstairs/ also using with chime pro) Third, great picture quality; if you are able to get the app to open in time to view whos at the door or near by(using motion sensor) Fourth, your voice RARELY comes through clear at the doorbell speaker (2 out of 10). Fifth, motion sensor works well and easy setup. Basically, I would recommend but don't think it's going to change the way you answer the door until the technology speeds up.

LONG TERM TEST. I've had this Ring Doorbell Pro camera and Chime Pro combo for three months and can highly recommend it. WHAT YOU GET: Ring Doorbell Pro Camera unit itself, Chime Pro Wifi Booster, screwdriver, four changeable face plates, install screws, retrofit plate, window sticker, drill bit for masonry, screws, install wiring kit, full color manuals and help guides. WHAT YOU NEED: Existing doorbell with 16-24VAC wiring, or a 16-24VAC transformer to direct wire this to. Drill for using masonry drill bit if installing on masonry. Android or iPhone smartphone. Download the Ring app onto your phone before install. INSTALL: Remove the existing wired doorbell and simply attach the existing wires to this new doorbell pro, wire the Pro install kit to your interior chime box using the simple wire clips provided and you are all set. Total install time even if no doorbell is present and you use a transformer will take 30 minutes. Plug the Chime Pro wifi booster into any AC outlet in your home between the camera and the wifi antenna for your network. Download the Ring app and it walk you through the install and setting up the doorbell camera and the Chime Pro. It's as easy as that. Step by step using the app as your guide, just click yes or no and answer a few questions like wifi password and the app does the rest to set up the system for you. This Pro model must be hardwired to a power source, it is not cordless like other models. USE: Using the app and setting up the camera for alerts along with the chime pro unit is flawless. It works well and it works fast. The app allows you to set all the features of the doorbell cam and the chime pro operation right from your phone. From the app you can adjust motion sensitivity, custom motion detection zones (up to three) as well as motion detection time limits or exclusions on a calendar. You'll also decide what ring tones you want the chime pro to make when it gets a doorbell push or a motion sensing trigger. You can tell the camera what kind of motion you want to detect, from people only to all activity and in between. You can view old videos, new videos as they happen and you can also select a live view at any time from your phone, anywhere in the world. The speaker and microphone work fine, it picks up even bird sounds. If you live in a very loud area the speaker can be hard to hear at times, but most of the time it works perfectly. Images are clear and you can easily make out faces. Full color during the day and grey scale at night. Night vision works out to about 50 feet. Crystal clear video in either mode. Once motion is detected in the zones you set up in the app or a doorbell has been pushed you'll get a notice on your phone immediately. You can view the video as it happens or open the saved videos in the app which allow you to review past footage. SAVING VIDEOS: Videos are automatically saved on Ring's user website for viewing as well. They are easy to access with your password, Ring allows you to share the videos via email, social media and they can be downloaded directly to your device. You can save videos up to 60 days back. After 60 days they are deleted unless you download them. You'll get a free 30 day trial of the website upon installation, after that it is a paid service, but it's very inexpensive. We subscribed immediately and love being able to email a link to a video to anyone we choose at any time. OVERALL: Overall this is a great package. Customer service was great when I had a question about wiring this to a transformer. They even include the tools needed for install which was spectacular. The Doorbell Pro camera, included Chime Pro wifi booster and motion sensor settings and being able to review videos online and share them is outstanding. I highly recommend this package. It's much simpler to use I'm not sure what I did without it before. You can later add as many cameras, chimes to the app and system as you want for full coverage of your property.

This Thing is Cool
When I picked up this product, I had no idea on how simple it would be to install this product. Out of the box there isn't much to this product which is great. To install all you have to do is open your doorbell chime in your home, disconnect two wires, insert those wires into the ring transformer, and then connect the two wires back into the door bell chime. Then replace the door bell button at the front door, then run the app to finish installation. One thing to note. when the product is first installed, it will take a couple of minutes for the doorbell to power up. It's not immediate, so be patient with it. I really like that you can set up a motion zones that will identify where the camera should pick up movement. I was able to set up the zone to exclude movement from the sidewalk, and road so I am not being notified every time someone walks down the street or a car drives by. Once movement enters the motion zone, you will be notified via the app that the camera is picking up motion. This will notify you that someone is at your door before the doorbell is rang. Once the doorbell is rang you are able to talk to the person at the door if needed, which is pretty convenient. This also comes with a one-month free trial to Ring's online support that will archive your video files from each time there is motion detected at the door, or the doorbell rings. Overall this product is pretty awesome.

Everything Works As Advertised
I wanted to connect to my existing doorbell chime and transformer but also wanted to have a chime that could be located on any of the 3 floors in our home or even in the garage on rare occasion. I located this unit at our side door and the ring wireless unit at our front door. This unit is narrow enough to fit on standard "brick molding" that acts as the outside casing on most exterior doors. It is just a bit narrower. The connection directions were clear and simple for the unit that mounts in my existing (mechanical) chime. Supposedly that is the tough part but there was nothing particularly daunting about it in my case. While the instructions say to connect the transformer and front door wire I knew that I would need to connect to the back door wire in my situation. In addition to the WiFi setup was simple. So was the setting up of the motion detection in my opinion. While the color and finish of my doorbell aren't a big issue to me, it's nice to have the option to use any of four covers without ordering and purchasing anything extra. Ring seems to be putting a good deal of thought into everything--packaging, installation, operation and integration with other devices. I am using both this and the ring wireless unit, (which is considerably wider, BTW), with Windows 10 on two notebook PCS, an Android tablet and the Nucleus intercom system. (Nucleus just recently added ring support as beta software and so far it works just fine.) Since I have two Chime Pros and two ring units as well as a variety of devices for viewing visitors at the door I have great flexibility of how and where to detect visitors. In just the first 10 days I have been able to tell when FedEx and UPS have made deliveries and when unwanted solicitors have come to the door. The fish eye lens makes it virtually impossible for someone to escape being caught on camera as they approach the door.

Ring , Ring
Ring Doorbell with chime Pro My experience with Ring products has been a good journey. Is it the best money can buy ? No but it is a great system to give you a layer of security for its price point and very easy to install without having to hire someone to install. Important factors. Good wifi and internet. . You will need a good wifi signal in order to get the highest quality performance out of the Ring. For the Pro Ring your existing Doorbell must be powered by a 16-24 volt transformer. A simple test with a multi meter with the existing Doorbell wires can give you this information. Another would be to find the transformer and read the specs. Transformers are usually in your garage, basement or other utility areas. Knowing your router and wifi logins and passwords makes things go much faster. Plus pre loading the Ring App. The position and location of your Doorbell ,will it give you the view you desire or will you need to Relocate with a new system or buy a mounting position bracket by Ring to get the angle you desire. The Ring Pro, claims a 1080p camera. In comparison to my first Ring Doorbell 720p and Ring Security I'm not really seeing the difference. The 720p is sufficient but I was hoping the 1080p would provide better quality to a true 1080p . According to the units dashboard thru the app I have excellent wifi to the Ring . My internet is above average I'm able to stream HD video with No buffering and meets the requirements for bandwidth for all the streaming companies. Ring claims poor internet for the degrading 1080p . By assigning a specific channel on my router I'm able to get a better picture but still not 1080p. maybe it's mega pixels of the camera. Another benefit is the ability to use 2.4 GHZ or 5 GHZ . All this is not a deal breaker as the product evolves it's becoming better . Setting up the Ring Pro is straight forward if your house is able to meet the requirements I've listed above. Wifi, internet and. 16-24volt Doorbell system with hardwire to the Doorbell button. Getting the app was painless and Free. Loading the new unit to an existing account took about 2 minutes. My install was a bit challenging doing a custom mount in my double doors second handle dummy mount. The Ring Pro comes with interchangeable face plates to match your taste and exterior. Optional angle wedges can be purchased if you need a different angle of view from you button location. The Pro Chime which came with this package is just that a chime that can be used in place of your door bell or in conjunction. It also is a extender to your wifi system . Of course it needs a 110 wall socket to plug into. For my application it's great since I've left my original Doorbell in place and using the Pro as a standalone system. Warning unlike the Pro Doorbell the Pro Chime only works on the 2.4 GHZ . The Ring Doorbell is a great system if your looking for a system that will identify action at your door and the view from your door. It works very well and doesn't miss much not even birds flying by. The Chime pro is a great benefit too. The enhanced picture quality , hardwired power (no Battery Charging) make this a winner. Add on to your system and now can get the cloud service with multiple units for a flat 100.00 per year is awesome. We have 2 pros, one regular and one security camera it now makes sense and keeps the economics in check. So now you have your Ring installed here is what you really need to know before diving in. Yes the system works. With just our original Doorbell we have stoped 1 person from entering our house, one thief from taking a package and getting a package replaced by proving it was not delivered with care. With the Ring security we have also seen all the activity going on in our court. The system is basic but gives you a level of comfort when your not home. Live view is awesome. As the product evolves some of the issues will get better. Probably my biggest issue is the clarity of the picture when your trying to get details. Yes you see things but most cases you can only recognize a shape etc. like a car you can see but not read the license plate . Or you can see a person but not good detail to really identify them . The Doorbell pro is the best at a max of 10 feet. Response time between letting the user know and recording lags sometimes . For the door bell sometimes if they don't ring the bell you don't get them approaching but maybe when they turn around. Lastly here the big thing at first the Ring is cool it works great and something your showing off cause it advertises itself every time it scenes motion. When your phone makes the Ring noise and you get a notification there is motion. But after time it becomes an annoyance. Your phone is making noises when you least expect it. Most times it's just motion in our busy court of 5 homes, I get an average of 50 notifications daily .Cars, kids, birds, even the heat coming off my black SUV when a cloud covers the sun and it reappears in my driveway. Yes it's sensitive. I've had to turn off and dumb down my units moving zones etc. . With 3 iPads 4 phones with the app and my neighbor drives into his driveway OMG our house comes alive with the Ring Ring Ring. All in all it works it's economical . You decide.
