I installed these items in order to control the built...
I installed these items in order to control the built in recirculating pump in a RSC199i.
The water heaters circulating control has 3 settings, economy, normal and off. Economy and normal turn on the circulator throughout the day. The unit does try to learn your hot water use but combined with the circulator turning on and off all day wastes a lot of energy. By adding the Control-R and remote buttons the circulator will only start when I hit the button. Connecting the Control-R and pairing the button was easy. It did require a software update which required downloading the Rinnai app. Pairing the app to the Control-R was easy. Downloading the update was easy. However, pairing the Control-R to the in house WiFi never worked out. But I really don’t want another thing connected to my phone. The remote buttons work just fine over a distance of 60’. And my energy cost has gone down.

Garbage, really
It's bad. I had to put a wireless access point right next to the thing to get it connected, but then the app fails to retrieve information from my heater 99.9% of the time. Recirculation never happens. Check the Rinnai app store reviews. Save yourself from hours of hair-pulling frustration.

Doesn't work - app never connects
I knew I was in for a bad time when I downloaded the required Rinnai app and it was full of 1-star reviews. The app is awful and I can never get it to connect. It seems that this is a common problem. Total waste of money.

I have a strong WiFi signal from a mesh router...
I have a strong WiFi signal from a mesh router system at home, so have not had as many issues with the connection dropping as some people have reported, but it has stopped working twice. Also, the app is a little rough around the edges. It's usable, but clunky.

Terrible troubles with linking the Control-R box with wifi. Sometimes it takes days to figure out solution for linking. There are times when I don't even know why it starts working, or not working. Can't figure a clear solution. This can be maddening to have to waste time figuring it out !!!!! The Apps recent update made things worse.

Highly unreliable
Have had 2 fail in first year. Wifi often drops out. Doesn't seem to control the water heater reliably. Most recent software update does not appear to have been tested - it shows linked to the smartphone app and I can adjust the temperature, but it no longer allows me to start or stop recirculation - despite the app showing its running or not running, it may or may not be. Also with the latest update neither alexa, nor google home can reach it (tells user no devices registered)

Poor App/User Design
Just installed and I was able to use the app to get it set up, but what a poor user experience! Rinnai - spend a few bucks to get a user experience designer instead of an engineer to think about the user experience for the app! Examples:
- you can't set a timer for the system to turn on at 6 am and turn off at Midnight (12 am). Instead, you have to say 6am to 11:30pm (because it gets confused by the two am timers).
- using the QR code to register the heater is a great idea, but it couldn't read it and kept saying it was invalid, forcing a manual registration.
- there's an icon in the lower left corner of the app titled "Priority" but there's no explanation of what it does!
- if you have larger text settings on your phone, you can't read the text in the app (it doesn't scroll)
- Product information, which I assume should load if you've registered, is blank
- Demo is useless. Doesn't do anything. Instructions would be more appropriate.
All that being said, the wired controller that I have on my other Rinnai is equally non intuitive. Rinnai really needs to invest in some user-centric designers.

Does not stay connected to WiFi
The device connects and disconnects constantly. Spent hours with support on the phone.
Have two more smart controllers in the garage along side the Control-R (Genie garage door WiFi module and a WiFi light switch). Both maintain WiFi connection, but the Control-R is flaky. Essentially unusable.
