Questions & Answers

Will the PivoTrim X4 trimmer head accept larger than .095 line and is it made out of plastic or metal?

I'm looking for a trimmer head that will accept larger line, such as 1.30 and/or 1.55 because I have to trim several acres of land. For the same reason, I'd like a metal head that will last longer than plastic. Thanks!

I have two of these purchased about 2006. I put 0.095 line cut to 11" (5.5" of swath) in one and use it on a 33 cc Ryobi 4 cycle. It works great. I tried longer pieces, but they require too much power for the Ryobi. The string I use is the '+' shaped material and it lasts a very long time except on rocky areas where it hits the rocks and fences, cement walkways, etc., where the swing back feature is used the most. The line wears out until it breaks off at the holes in the pivot, but still last a lot longer than with a regular trimmer feeder. The red smooth stuff that comes with the unit isn't worth messing with! I took the other unit and drilled the holes larger so that it would hold 0.130 string. I tried it on the Ryobi, but it was too much for it. So I used it on my 1970s vintage Brush Whacker 42 cc. For it, I cut the string to 14" so that the total swath was about 18" and wow did that work well. Nothing could stop it. Unfortunately, that machine died after many, many years of rough service so I transferred the pivotrim to an Echo 230. I had cut the length down to about 11" for a 15" swath, but the pivotrim didn't last long. I think the major abuse while on the Brush Cutter had already stressed the drilled-out plastic rotators. I had forgotten that two of them were already broken. I ran it in grass and large weeds with no problem until I hit an obstruction that broke another plastic rotator and then only a little bit later i hit a utility conduit and broke the last one. I think that the rpm of the Echo was too high and even though I tried to limit it, I kept allowing the speed to climb up. The Echo would have been better using 0.095 string, based on the other Ryobi trimmer, with an increased length where it had to work harder to tern the head. Whatever the case, that 0.130 string is nearly indestructible, but when it breaks, the break is near the rotator. I am going to try to put metal rotators in their place (probably two brass rotators) and see if they will take the speed of the Echo 230. It sure mashed the big stuff just as my old Brush Cutter had so I'm thinking that I needed to load it down a little and make a bigger swath. Don't be deceived however, the 0.095 string works very well and is much better in the '+' shape than the round stuff they send with it. That stuff lasted only a few minutes in tough going. With the 0.095 and the 0.130 string, I could go for two blocks against a curb edge before the string would wear out and all morning if I didn't hit something that damaged the string. The 0.095 actually wears out by getting shorter and shorter so the trimmer speeds up and the swath gets smaller. I prefer the 17 - 18" swath - you can to a lot of cutting in an hour. The main use now has been around the church building where we attend. I also use them on five acres where much of the trimming is done where the mower cannot go because of the rocks, etc.

Gas vs Electric

It mentions several times in the description that this is for GAS trimmers, will it work OK on an electric? What's the difference?
Asked by: coonster
In general, electric models I have had have a spool that fits into a cup or rotating drum housing. Gas heads are fit tight up against the debris shield or transmission. That's problem one. Next, you would have to find someone witha set of nuts and remove the electric spool and try the reverse head treads. IF, IF, the nut fit, you could THEORETICALLY cut off the drum and use this head. You might be able to make an adapter spacer but that means the debris shield might be too high and not cut off any string you just installed. The answer is mostly likely, "No or impractical." I tested my Toro electric 1400 12" trimmer and it won't work on it. None of the nut set fit. Gas trimmer are really high powered and throw a lot of debris. They have small shields. Electric trimmer are less powerful, have larger shields, and usually don't throw large amounts of debris at high speeds onto you. For thick shafted or tough weeds, a gas trimmer is a must have. Using all 4 strings in the Pivotrim, I could feel the engine lug as the RPMs dropped. Removed one of the strings, a little better performance for awhile but worried about the "lopsided weight of the head and how it might affect performance. Sure enough, after running it awhile more, I began to smell something burning. I looked down and saw that the plastic trim guard had completely melted near the bracket. The Pivotrim puts too much load on the engine, causing the shaft to heat up and eventually melt the guard. Would have been nice to know the engine capacity requirements prior to purchasing.

The self feeder type even when new from the best manufacturer never seemed to work well for very long. The secret with the Pivotrim is in the heavier gauge line and of course the pivot. It lasts an incredibly long time so you are not constantly stopping and changing line, or with the self feeding type, trying to keep it from getting stuck.

My only issue is that my 28cc Husqvarna weed trimmer wasn't strong enough to spin this through tough grass. The 2 line head works much better because it can reach faster speeds. This head makes it easy to replace the line and I do believe the line lasts longer due to the design. I would recommend this product if you have a powerful weed eater.

This one cost more than any in the past and is very noticeably cheaper quality. I don't think it will make it through this last part of the season.

I do not have to change the string nearly as often as with a standard weedeater head. I do a lot of heavy brush weedeating, but the RIno-Tuff lasts for several years.
