Questions & Answers

When grilling does this have a charcoal grilling taste like kingsford

Asked by: Connie
This is all natural. Kingsford has a lot of ingredients, some of which affect the smell. This is better.

lighter fluid is an option, but not the best. I recommend taking cotton balls, soak them in a jar of isopropyl alcohol, place about three balls in the charcoal and light them up. Store the jar and cotton balls for future lighting. Cheap, no odors, no wax smell from cube starters and safe. Cheers!

Asked by: Anna
You can light this like any other charcoal, with a chimney, electric starter, lighter fluid, or starting blocks. Weber starting cubes work better than other blocks I have tried. I noticed Royal Oak sells their own starting blocks but I have not tried them.

It all natural? Or adding something to made easy burn?

Asked by: WX
The "Royal Oak 15.44 lb. 100% All Natural Hardwood Lump Charcoal" is the only hardwood charcoal that I use. It is all natural and very easy to start. To start the fire I use a chimney(*) and newspapers; never use any kind of fuel to start. I was a big fan and big promoter of Royal Oak for years but that all changed with the last 2 bags I purchased. I put a pork roast on my Kamado after bringing it up to temp and noticed a pronounced acrid smell from the smoke and noticed it was still considerably more white than usual. Two hours later I pulled the roast and it was horrid tasting. After the cooker cooled I took a look at the remaining lump and found that a good 25% of it was not completely carbonized. I inspected the rest of the bag, same thing. Opened the other bag I had, same thing 25% not carbonized. I then looked at the bag and was surprised to find it was now produced in South America. I don’t know what type of wood they use in their South American operation, but I can assure you it is not what was used before. This stuff is the worst smelling wood if not totally carbonized you could ever imagine. Almost any hardwood is acceptable if fully processed so I have to assume they have a major quality control issue.

I usually purchase Central Market brand lump charcoal and do not experience this issue. It got the job done, but I won't purchase again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another "Less for More" US company... ... Another "Less for More" US company... I LOVE to use real lump charcoal and did a lot it research when I switched back to charcoal from gas 10 years ago. This WAS one of the brands I loved for many years, but noted they started doing the same as some other companies in the US to get the most out of us... They cut down in the weight (amount) of the bag for the same basic cost... I think it is a good quality, but low value now because of this.... Where I live, I find the same (or in some bags BETTER) quality, but BETTER value from the Supermarket brand. The bags are slightly smaller to begin with, but the supermarket is always having sales on it so we pick up two at a time when it is on sale... "Two can play the game"... If you are a BBQ nut and really into your charcoal, do a Google search on "charcoal rating site" and you will get a hit on "The Lump Charcoal Database". They rate ALL KINDS AND BRANDS of charcoal around the country. They provide a very detailed review as they get a bag, dump it out, sort sizes, take pics, cook with it then write the reviews... All very interesting (and some may say strange) and helpful... Especially your local brands. I note some people asked then to rate brands they did not have a rating for and they obliged...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality charcoal & here are some tips Here's how I use this in my Weber grill. For those complaining about small pieces falling through the charcoal grate, remedy that by adding a 2nd charcoal grate & install fireplace/woodstove insert bricks. Place the 2nd grate over your 1st to create a waffle pattern. The fireplace bricks tremendously help with making the fire burn more evenly, & prevents you from adding too much charcoal. I use a cheap colander to sift any small charcoal pieces from the ashes then dump those bits atop my charcoal. Doing this fills the gaps in your charcoal so it burns slower. To maximize cooking space, add a 2nd cooking grate upside down atop your existing grate. If you cook your food atop the 2nd grate, it'll smoke better. There, you just turned a Weber kettle into a smoker. This works very nicely & won't hurt your wallet. Enjoy!

After being a Kingsford charcoal briquettes customer for years, switched to this lump charcoal and was pleasantly surprised. First off this lump hardwood charcoal lights easily with a chimney and once lit does not give off as much smoke as Kingsford charcoal briquettes, which gives the neighbors a break. Of the pieces some are large (6-8 inches) and the small are of a perfect size. Another thing I like about this is that when done grilling and shutting down my Weber grill by closing the vents, saves me like about 50% of the remaining charcoal lumps that I can use next time. The coals themselves burn hot and clean making cleanup a breeze. Love this charcoal and though a little more expensive than the briquettes with all the advantages it’s a no brainer which is better. I will never go back to regular briquettes. If you never tried this give it a shot, I am sure you will be as happy as me and my family, this is a whole new level to grilling. Try it, you’ll like it.

I bought these because I did not wish to purchase a double bag of Kingsford charcoal briquetts at regular price. The Royal Oak product gets hot faster than the briquetts, but because of the uneven sizes it does not lend itself to using both sides of the kettle for fire and cooking the meat or fish indirectly. When I have finished the bag, I will go back to my Kingsford.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lump Charcoal I have a BGE and have been using their Lump Charcoal. I got tired of paying almost $30 for 1 bag so I decided to try Royal Oak's Lump Charcoal and I couldn't be happier. It performs just as well as BGE's and is half the price. I'm done with overpaying for the BGE Lump Charcoal and am sticking with Royal Oak's
