Yes they are laminated and if you cut them you would have an unfinished edge to deal with. I that edge isn't exposed then you would be able to have them cut in the store.

These are not real wood. They are press-board with a print of wood on them. They look nice, but have the limitations of press board (strip easy, warp with heavy load).

I actually like being able to buy these shelves rather than making my own. Just know what you are buying and if it fits your needs, get it. They are NOT made of beechwood. That is the name of the color. The picture makes it look pink, but it is just the regular light wood color found inside most kitchen cabinets. Pressed wood is another name for particle board. These shelves are only 5/8" thick, NOT as thick as the typical cabinet shelf, which is 3/4". If you have a long shelf, it will sag of its own weight eventually. If you put heavy things on it, it will sag quickly. The laminate is very thin and the edges chip easily, so be careful. If you cut them to shorten them, use a fine blade to reduce chipping. Also, when you wash them, make sure water doesn't soak into the cut edges since it will make the particle board swell. Most of the low-cost kitchen/bathroom cabinets don't have enough shelves, so these are good for adding extras. The transparent plastic clips are a bit of a pain until you learn how they work. The only problem is that HD does NOT sell these in-store. They have to be ordered for pickup.

They also come in 72", but only in 12" width. I have 10" shelves above the 12" (I was planning on trimming them down to 10"), but ended up really liking them!
