Answeruse rubber maid (pre packed 'white') or a #10 flat head wood/metal screw with 3 to 4 inch. Pre drill the whole in the stud or wood.
Can the rail be cut to a shorter length? If so, how?

AnswersI have cut the hanging rail. Make sure you are hitting the studs so the shelves will have good support. If the holes do not line up to the studs, drill holes in the hang rail where the studs are. At least 3 studs with 3 to 4 inch #10 screws, especially if going through sheet rock. Use a grinder, with a fine grinder blade. An inexpensive one from Home Depot will do the job. Tape where you are going to cut, helps with the mark to cut and with some of the shavings. Use painters blue tape.

Rail isn't long enough for the 8 foot wide shelf
The rail is only 80" long and the first holes are 4" in from the ends. That is where your first stud will be and hence your first upright and brackets. So assuming you center your 8' shelf on 80" rail you will have 12" of shelf on each end that is unsupported by the brackets. The shelf is way too flimsy to have that much unsupported length unless you don't set anything there in that 12" on each end. It would be better if the rail was wider so it could extend the full length of the 8' shelf and have brackets and uprights at the ends as well so that the entire length of the shelf is usable. I ended up buying a coupe extra rails and cutting them into shorter pieces and added them onto the ends of the shelves so they were supported.

I've used this before so I know that it works...
I've used this before so I know that it works very well. This particular one did not work for me because I could not get all of the parts that I need to put together a shelf system. This is very frustrating. I am returning all of the parts that I bought and starting with a totally different brand. The frustrating part is that I can the parts that I need online, but they don't ship.
