Q:Hi there! Can I use this product as a top coat over Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Garage Floor Kit? If not, what top coat can I use?
by|May 6, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Peter! Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer is intended to be used as a primer between a previous coating and a new coat. This product will have a gray tone to it and should not be used as a final topcoat. If wanting a clear finish, we recommend Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Premium Clear Floor Coating. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-EpoxyShield-90-oz-Clear-High-Gloss-2-Part-Epoxy-Interior-Low-VOC-Premium-Concrete-Garage-Floor-Paint-Top-Coat-Kit-365188/314107317 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Once this has been applied and dried, what are the next steps? Does an epoxy paint go over it, then a clear coat? Or is it just one of the two? Please advise. Thank you.

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Kim! Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer must be topcoated with an opaque paint or epoxy within 48 hours to ensure proper adhesion and durability. We do not recommend applying a clear coat directly over this primer. If wanting to clear coat your epoxy, make sure to follow the listed dry and recoat times for the epoxy. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Kelly! Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer can be used under most floor coatings. This primer is intended for use on concrete surfaces only, and we do not recommend it for wood. Make sure the paint you are using can be used with water-based primers. This primer can typically be topcoated after 6 hours, but you want to ensure it is topcoated within 48 hours for full adhesion. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

          Garage previously epoxy used
Garage floor epoxy has peeled badly and looking for something where I did not have to etch and sand. Found this used on 2 and 1/2 garage 2 cans covered with extra left over I let it dry overnight and half of next day then added the top coat rustoleum and let sit for 3 hours and applied a 2 coat for kicks and giggles I did add the ATI skid one package in each can of top coat. So it dried and looks wonderful let's see how it does after a week for the car tires to drive in.

No sanding, no grinding, no etching.
Pretty impressed so far. Day one and I used the Rock Solid grey high gloss on top of the primer and so far setting in nicely. I used the primer over top an epoxy garage floor I did 10 years ago. I don’t have a before picture, but it looked pretty similar to the one on the can. Slight peeling in 8 spots. Where the tires of our cars sat. I cleaned the garage floor with soap and water. I patched the cracks and peeling spots with the rust-oleum 2 part crack repair. Then used the primer. Let that sit for about 24 hours and then used the rock solid epoxy kit. I have a 3 car garage. It took 2 2.5 garage kits and 1 single. I also bought 4 extra bags of paint chips. Ha. Buy more than you think! I will add an update after 1 week of hot tires. But gonna wait a full week before we park in it.

              This stuff is thick
Goes down thick and easy. Went over previously stained concrete Got only 150sqft out of a gallon but dried nice and solid. Power washed and let dry first. Using it in backyard well see how it stands up to the elements. Used it as an undercoat for Behr 1part epoxy. Actually liked rusto’s color better. Now making sure it cures well 72hrs. Comes out a beautiful slate blue grey You may want to just add a finish over it and call it a day Adds some serious new life to old concrete!

                Great Stuff
It looked so good I took the exopyshield back. No hot tire pick up so far, and held up to water pool. I used a degreaser first.

                  Does the Job!!!
My wife and I were looking to finish our garage so we decided to go ahead and attempt the job ourselves when we received fair high quotes for the job. I would say we both have a fair share of experience when it comes to DIY projects but we are both far from pros and have never painted or epoxy a garage floor. After reading some of the reviews over and over I started to become more and more nervous about us doing the project and wanted to call back the pros. After realizing that my concrete wasn't bare and that it did have a sealant on it I called Rust-oleum who then directed me to this product so I didn't have to worry about renting any heavy duty tools to sand the floor for the epoxy that I was using to bond to it. They were super helpful and answered every question I had with all my nerves before we started our project. So we prepped the floor by cleaning all the grease spots and dirt then I went ahead and swept and vacuum the floor numerous times but almost impossible to get every speck of dust out. Then I power washed the floor and then from there I used the Rust-oleum concrete repair kit to patch up the few cracks we had on the floor. After waiting for the floor to dry the prep work was done we then went ahead and put down the recoat primer the next day in about 2 hours time. It went down very easy and came out great. From there we waited the til the next day well within the time frame of 48 hours that you have to apply your next layer for proper bonding. When it was all said and done everything came out real great and both my wife and I were blown away with the job that we did considering neither one of us have ever done it before. Everyone attempt is different so I wouldn't let someones bad experience steer me away plus the folks at Rust-oleum were only a call away for all my questions and they were super helpful eveytime.

Used in our basement and peeled all over the place!
Save yourself some money! I purchased this product to use with the basement Specific Tan EpoxyShield. We sanded, etched, mopped, and wire brushed the previously coated basement floor in order to ensure a good application. By 10:00 AM on Saturday (a dry, warm day) we applied the Recoat Primer and left it to dry until Sunday morning. When we return Sunday morning to begin applying the EpoxyShield we found that the primer was peeling up under our shoes in some spots. We then took painters tape in order to test the adhesion elsewhere—you can see the results in the attached photo. Now we are out the cost of the two cans of primer but also at a loss as to how to remedy the problem. Rustoleum really left us high and dry here. I've never left a bad review in my life but feel inclined to warn prospective buyers. We followed their steps to the letter and are still left with poor adhesion...

                    Response from Rust-OleumSupportMar 30, 2021
Let's talk about this! The Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer is designed to replace the need for sanding on previously coated surfaces before applying a new coat of our garage floor coatings. We also do not recommend etching previously painted surfaces, as etching is intended for bare concrete, and it can weaken the coating on the surface. For smaller bare concrete areas, we recommend sanding with 60/80 grit sandpaper or spot etching larger patches, but this is not needed for the coated areas. While sanding is not needed with this primer, the surface does need to be clean and dry prior to priming. Moisture or residue on the surface can prevent the primer from properly adhering.

great product, especially before Rock Solid application
i had a floor that had alot of paint still on it and some peeling in high use areas. I wanted to apply Rustoleum Rock Solid floor product so i needed the perfect primer base underneath it and Recoat Primer was the choice. I figured for $41.00 for a gallon on my 2 car garage floor it was totally worth it to ensure my finished product was going on top of a dependable primer coat. This product really get's sucked into the concrete as i think that's the whole idea. I barely squeeked out my 2 car garage with one gallon. It dried over night and i was good to go the next day with the Rock Solid. I highly recommend this product
