YOU MUST WAIT 48 HOURS FOR BASE COAT TO DRY!!
You must let base coat of chalk paint dry for 48 hrs or this clear matte spray will bubble, crack, and strip the base coat off. I found out the hard way and now have to start over. Very disappointed.

Rust-Oleum Chalked Clear Coating be recoated within 1 hour of the previous coat or after 48 hours has passed. If you recoat before the first application of paint has skinned over and begun to dry to the touch, the two coats will dry correctly. However, if recoated at the wrong time, it may wrinkle blister or crack, which sounds like what you are experiencing. Simply put, to apply a second coat, the first coat must be very dry or very wet - never in between. To fix this, try sanding the surface, wait 48 hours and apply again.

Do NOT use
Ended up needing 5 spray cans for a medium size dresser. Cost way more then wax. Was NOT EASIER to use. Made my smooth finish rough & bumpy. Worst part, you need 3-4 layers otherwise you have discoloration & the stores are out of stock so it’s not done

Thank you for sharing your experience, Tori. Each can of Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat Spray covers about 12 square feet and a minimum of 2 coats is recommended. It sounds like you're experiencing dry spray. This is when the product dries before it hits the surface of your project. This occurs most often when users hold the can too far from the surface when spraying - our recommendation is 10-16" from the surface. Effects of dry spray can also happen when temperatures are too high or too low. You can try using a lint-free rag slightly damp, and gently wipe the surface to remove the dusting. If it's still rough after doing that, you'll want to sand the surface with 180 or 220 grit sandpaper and make sure it's clean and dry before recoating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

This is the second project I've used this matte finish spray paint. It's a perfect contrast to paint the base of older wood furniture while leaving the Walnut top natural. Great update!

Great for nightstand makeover!
I'm terrible at spray painting, but managed to make my old night stand look decent! I didn't get any of the drips or patches of odd textures I've had with other paints. Two coats used about 80% of one can - definitely cheaper than buying new nightstands!

This paint was so easy to use it totally changed...
This paint was so easy to use it totally changed my view on painting furniture. I used the clear chalk paint to add protection to the top but it totally messed up the texture. I followed the directions. May have been better if I waited longer. Planning to sand and paint the top again but skip the clear coat. Also, this looked gray at first but once it was inside it looked like a soft, pale black.

you have better control with a fire hose
Don’t use on large surfaces like a car; you’ll be spending 16 hours sanding it all off. Complete trash and a waste of days of work. I was doing a youtube video on my ratrod. I normally use a booth and a paint gun, but I figured I would demonstrate a budget paint job on a car. The ghost flames and blood spatter came out great, and the clearcoat wrinkled because you can’t have any freaking control with the fire hose nozzle after following the instructions on dry times and coating. I am very unhappy and now I have to strip the whole car.

Thank you for reaching out! When applying Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Clear Spray, it is essential that the recoat times for the previous coating are followed. We also do not recommend sanding between newer coats, as this can likely cause wrinkling as well. Please keep in mind, this is not an automotive coating and will not apply the same way.

Little sanding , little cleaning , wam bam , new...
Little sanding , little cleaning , wam bam , new fan again . Great paint , drys quickly , sprays even and nice , forgot to spray it upside down to clear but still sprayed well an hour later . Came out better then new !
