Will this yellow white chalk paint?
Asked by: Karen
In my experience, yes, that is exactly what it did. According to Rustoleum, if you are working w/ prestained or painted wood you need to put a topcoat of stainblocker on as primer before painting to prevent this.

Can this be used to seal chalk painted chairs?

These will be heavily used dining chairs. I have painted them with Rust-Oleum chalk paint. Will this protect the chairs pretty well from spills and wear and tear? It doesn't change with heat once cured, right? Like if someone sat in a chair and got hot it wouldn't start to come off on their clothes? Just making sure...Thank you
Asked by: silkybee
Absolutely. On heavily used items maybe several Coates would be in order. Follow the instructions for multiple coats on the can. Then make sure you let thoroughly dry before seating on.

What is the maximum amount of time you can wait after applying chalked paint to apply your top coat in cooler temps?

Asked by: Moises
Since you said cooler temperatures I’m assuming you meant outside you need to let your chalk paint dry / cure for at least 1 to 2 hours before applying the topcoat ... I let my top coat dry/cure for at least 3 hrs but that’s just me ... The can says that you need to have your temperature between 50° and 90° Anguish humidity has to be below 85% to ensure proper.drying… Also says for drying as 30 minutes to an hour and may be Re-coated after two hours... hope this helps

Customer Reviews

30 oz. Chalked Clear Matte Interior Protective Topcoat is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 166.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was wrong I recently wrote a bad review about this product. I had painted my table with white chalk paint and sealed with this. The table turned horrible colors of yellow and orange! I was horrified and so angry. Well after lots of googling because I could not figure out how I had off results and others had great results, I figured out what I and probably most of the others with yellow results are doing wrong. The chalk paint is extremely porous and when you apply a sealer it soaks through and pulls the tannins out of wood. So that’s why I had yellow and orange streaks because my wood was a reddish orange color in its natural state. So after more googling if your painting something that is in natural unsealed wood with a chalk paint, you need to apply a primer first so this discoloration doesn’t happen. I re applied white chalk paint over this sealer after it dried. Then I re applied the sealant on top of the freshly dried chalk paint (so now I have wood, chalk paint, sealer that turned orange, chalk paint, new layer of sealer) and finally the results were great! The product did not turn yellow or orange this time and the table remained a beautiful white. I learned a great lesson about paint products this week LOL and gained a great headache along with it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked fine for me! I was worried about this product after reading reviews, but I had no problems. I waited the recommended eight hours before applying it to my dresser and nightstands, that I painted Linen White. I used a damp brush and thin coats. I waited the recommended two hours between coats and applied a second coat. I got no yellowing. While applying it, I did get minor bubbling, but I just waited a second and went back over it with my brush and the bubbles went away. I would like to note that I was painting furniture that had previously been painted black/dark brown. It was not stained. I think they yellowing many are reporting might be the result of the stain underneath bleeding through. I only cleaned my furniture ahead of time. I did not additional prep to the surface.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed The first time I purchased this product I painted a wood dresser in the rustoleum chalk gray and applied this top coat as instructed and the piece turned out beautifully. I even applied the top coat to a faux wood (printed wood on furniture) after applying the linen white chalk paint and the piece turned out beautifully and has lasted over a year. Satified with my first experience, I decided to give it another try. I applied 3 coats of the linen wood to another faux wood furniture piece and it cam out beautiful.....until I applied this horrible top coat. The whole project was ruined as soon as it turned yellow and brown stain started to appear. I even touched up the furniture with the white paint and the brown stain was still there. Such a disappointment. Now i have to sand the paint off, purchase more paint, and restart this whole project. This topcoat is NOT recommended after using linem white chalk paint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to apply, sand, recoat and the finish is smooth.... Easy to apply, sand, recoat and the finish is smooth. The only drawback is it slightly darkens the final coat color and can make some light colors look dirty when it cures. It still is better than all the oil poly finishes I have tried. Their color shift was much more noticeable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy! Wish I would have read all the negative reviews before buying. This product is terrible. I painted my kitchen cabinets white, which I spent days doing, after applying the clear coat, it left horrible yellow streaks all over.Home Depot, pull this garbage off your shelves!
