Rustoleum Matte Sealer - does it yellow?

Have you tried the Rustoleum matte sealer that goes with the Rustoleum Chalked? I've read that it yellows the linen white. Also, how white is the linen white, is it more of an off-white? I normally use the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and mix the Pure White and Old White 50/50 and seal with the clear wax. I would like to save money if it's worth switching to the Chalked Rustoleum paint. Thank you!

Does this have blue or green undertones? The aged gray has a lot of blue and while it’s pretty, I want more of a Greige

Asked by: Lou
I have used this on chairs - it doesn't have blue or gray undertones but I also wouldn't consider it to lean towards beige. It is just a nice neutral light gray. The chairs in this photo - the table is the Charcoal Chalk Paint. Sorry it is blurry but you should be able to tell it is not blue or gray toned in my experience. Hope that helps!

I plan on using this on the base of my dining room table. Should I seal it? If so, should I use a wax or polyurethane and what brands do you recommend?
Asked by: Reva
I seal the base too for protection against foot and chair marks. My favorite is General Finishes flat poly. Also, if you ever want to refinish you need to get the wax off first.

I've refinished kitchen cabinets, bookcases, wardrobes before using the much more expensive (& only available in specialty shops) Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (available in chalk, pre-mixed or powdered form) & feel in love with the ease (No sanding or priming needed) of completely making over furniture & cabinetry in a very short period of time. Have half a day? Redo your kitchen or select furniture for a whole new look. I had read reviews of Rustoleum's fairly recent advance into chalk paint & decided to give it a try. I'm VERY glad I did!! Same basic usage as Annie Sloan, same to very close overall finished coverage. Can dilute as necessary for different "aged" appearance as you can with Annie Sloan. Overall, Rustoleum is now my go to brand for chalk paint & I look forward to the addition of more colors & local availability without having to wait for order to arrive on more diverse colors than beige or gray. Definitely recommend for anyone else timid about leaving the dependable & expensive Annie Sloan line!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Yellowed! Horrible! First off yes the bad reviews are true! Be prepared for your finished product to yellow! It doesnt matter whether your wood piece is in a natural state or stained...it will pull the wood coloring through. Chalk paint is supposed to be the easy peasy paint...no priming...no sanding...just slap on effortlessy and voila! However...if you do plan on using this finish you better prime your piece first or be prepared. What i thought was going to be a relatively easy project now is a nightmare! Yes i get it...chalk paint is porous but paired with wax it doesnt have these issues. Ive painted many pieces. Its hard to imagine that this product would do that as it looke like glue going on and is very white. There needs to be a warning or caution on the label about this. I too used a brownish/grey. I did some sanding with a fine grit sandpaper...it smoothed out the streaks and blended in for more of a weathered look but for once it wasnt the look i wanted. Im just sick over it. Better planning next time! Also if you use paint markers (i use them to make signs) once this is applied it will pull the paint marker and streak too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rustoleum Chalked Paint Aged Gray First of all, I am not loyal to any particular brand of paint, so there will be no comparisons. I judge each paint that I use based on its own merit. I generally make my own chalky style paint, which I love to work with, but I really wanted to try this brand and color. Aged Gray is a beautiful, soft, slightly cool gray. For best results, it's recommended to use a good quality brush with this and I appreciate why. I bought a new chalk paint brush that I wanted to try, but I've used Wooster brushes and I can see why a Wooster or Purdy-type paint brush is recommended. My table still came out very nice, even though I used a chalk paint brush; but next time, I'll use a regular brush. I think this is wonderful paint. It goes on very smoothly and it's not really thick. It feels glossy to work with, but dries to a lovely chalky finish. Don't let your first coat scare you: it will go on streaky, but the second coat will fix that and it will level out nicely. I really love this paint and I want to try the other colors, as well.

Although the price seems so good at half of 'designer' chalk paints, you end up short on quality. I have many years of experience painting furniture, chalk and otherwise, and this is my least favorite of all I've tried. It is inherently unworkable, you get once chance to stroke the paint on. It will snag and drag if you try to work the paint at all. It also leaves deeper brush strokes than others-fine if that's the look you're going for but not fine if buttery-smooth is your desired end product. Plan to sand between coats even if you've never felt the need to before, this has no leveling properties-as is the case with most chalk paints. I also used twice as much product as usual on a similar-sized project. If Rustoleum can work out some kinks this has the potential to be a nice alternative to ASCP. This time, though, it struck out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was wrong I recently wrote a bad review about this product. I had painted my table with white chalk paint and sealed with this. The table turned horrible colors of yellow and orange! I was horrified and so angry. Well after lots of googling because I could not figure out how I had off results and others had great results, I figured out what I and probably most of the others with yellow results are doing wrong. The chalk paint is extremely porous and when you apply a sealer it soaks through and pulls the tannins out of wood. So that’s why I had yellow and orange streaks because my wood was a reddish orange color in its natural state. So after more googling if your painting something that is in natural unsealed wood with a chalk paint, you need to apply a primer first so this discoloration doesn’t happen. I re applied white chalk paint over this sealer after it dried. Then I re applied the sealant on top of the freshly dried chalk paint (so now I have wood, chalk paint, sealer that turned orange, chalk paint, new layer of sealer) and finally the results were great! The product did not turn yellow or orange this time and the table remained a beautiful white. I learned a great lesson about paint products this week LOL and gained a great headache along with it!

I couldn't decide between this and paying double for the highly reputable Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, but I just couldn't bring myself to fork over $35 for a quart of paint, so I thought I'd give this a try. I'm SO glad I did! I bought it to refinish my dining room table from a dull all over golden stain to a more colorful statement piece. I was worried the paint wouldn't hold up with the thick coat of poly I had originally on my table, but this worked really well. I didn't need to sand or prime at all. I did three coats with a basic $5 milk paint brush, letting it dry for about 30 minutes in between coats. Then I sanded to give a distressed look and finished with a finishing wax (I did not wipe the wax off, I let it dry and it works much better than wiping). I think it turned out great!

I have used it for two projects to far – our bedroom furniture and kitchen table and chairs. It's held up well and was easy to use. I did our kitchen table and chairs over a year ago and have been so pleased with it. The bedroom furniture has been my most recent project. Little prep work and good coverage. Easy to get that rustic worn out look as well. I've used two coats on these projects and also used the Rust-Oleum Clear Matte coat for added protection. I will always use and recommend this product for any chalk paint projects!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Yellow! I used Rust-Oleum chalk paint on my new old antique dining chairs, and that product was pretty good and did good coverage, it was in linen white and I really loved that stark white look! Luckily though I only used this "clear matte" protective protective top coat on one section of one chair, as it dried it had patches of a nasty shade of yellow! I do not recommend this product. It stated that it is clear, so it should have dried to reveal the beautiful bright white underneath, not patchy yellow reminiscent of urine! Gross!
