Questions & Answers

Rustoleum Matte Sealer - does it yellow?

Have you tried the Rustoleum matte sealer that goes with the Rustoleum Chalked? I've read that it yellows the linen white. Also, how white is the linen white, is it more of an off-white? I normally use the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and mix the Pure White and Old White 50/50 and seal with the clear wax. I would like to save money if it's worth switching to the Chalked Rustoleum paint. Thank you!

I used the linen white over an old nightstand. it took 2 coats and probably could have used a 3rd. I noticed as applying the second coat that the was a subtle "crackling" affect going on. It wasn't horrible, but very unexpected and thought I should stop there. I applied the matte sealer. Nowhere on the can does it tell you exactly what it is. As I worked with it, it reminded me (consistancy, color and smell) of floor wax used years ago. I just went down to check how it dried and if it needed a second coat and am sad to say it not only yellowed, it made even larger "crackles" and looks horrible. I'm not sure what I'm going to need to do now to fix it.

Can I use this paint on top of a oil based wood stain. I stained the wood with oiled based stain, can I apply this?

Asked by: Stan
This can be used on oil stained wood that is dry. The area will need to be sanded before application.

Will this work on dark stained kitchen cabinets or do I need to use a primer?

Asked by: LD
Definitely a primer. On untreated plywood I used 3 coats.

Is it supposed to wipe off after it dries?

I applied a light coat on my buffet but I spilled some other paint on it so I decided to quickly wipe it with a wet towel to get the paint off and the WHOLE chalked paint came off as well. So I tried itvin other areas where I had chalk painted and let it dry for about 24 hours and it wiped right off. Is it his supposed to happen?!
Asked by: Hourik
Yes, it can. However, if you seal it properly with either a wax or polyacrylic, it will be a solid surface. When using a wax, it will cure for about 30 days and then it will be a hard finish. You can still use your piece during that take, simply be more cautious. Hope this helps!

I had an old bookcase I found on the side of the road, and always thought it was so ugly (but functional, so whatever). I finally decided to paint it so it would match my room, so I coated it with Rust-oleum Chalked Linen White. LOVE IT now & have received many compliments on it - this really pulled my apartment together & gave it a fresh look. One coat looked a bit more rustic than I was going for, so I went for two - it's so easy to apply though that it didn't even bother me. I am excited for my next project, and am considering applying the Chalked Smoked Glaze over it this weekend.

I bought an oak wardrobe at auction, wanted to distress and antique it. A knowledgeable employee at Home Depot Biddeford ME (Karin) told me how to do it easily with this paint. You almost CAN'T foul it up! Paint the piece with a brush, go back and distress it with sandpaper once dry and apply a protective wax. I can't believe how well it came out and how easy it was. Washing out the brush, it cleaned up easily and completely - my brush looks brand new; no residue. I have found a new hobby - chalk painting antique pieces that are in rough condition and can be picked up cheaply. This product is fabulous.

Annie Sloan) or even a DIY version, you'll find this quite different to work with. Read the label, people. It's NOT chalk paint. It's just a very very matte finish latex paint. Should you buy this if you want a true matte finish and don't really care if you're using chalk paint? Maybe. But you could use any latex paint and do a DIY chalk paint (using Plaster of Paris or calcium carbonate) and get a very matte finish and spend far less. Just sayin'.........

This product goes a long way. I have done a large table base and legs, 4 dining chairs and bench, a large desk with chair and a two drawer file cabinet and have only used about half of one can. I'm looking forward to my next project . This product proves that getting a beautiful chalk paint finish doesn't have to cost a fortune.

I couldn't decide between this and paying double for the highly reputable Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, but I just couldn't bring myself to fork over $35 for a quart of paint, so I thought I'd give this a try. I'm SO glad I did! I bought it to refinish my dining room table from a dull all over golden stain to a more colorful statement piece. I was worried the paint wouldn't hold up with the thick coat of poly I had originally on my table, but this worked really well. I didn't need to sand or prime at all. I did three coats with a basic $5 milk paint brush, letting it dry for about 30 minutes in between coats. Then I sanded to give a distressed look and finished with a finishing wax (I did not wipe the wax off, I let it dry and it works much better than wiping). I think it turned out great!

I've applied two coats over an old wood set of dressers. The final product looked SO GOOD but the first water glass placed on the side table left an awful permanent mark. Then the dresser had makeup put on it, and it also wouldn't come off. It's not wipe-able and seems to stain with anything placed on it.
