Can this be used as a primer for kitchen cabinets

Asked by DepoHomer October 31, 2020

Answer

Glad to help out. Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Surfacer is part of a 3-step system (primer, base coat, and top coat) designed for use on automotive surfaces only. For that reason, we don't recommend using this product on kitchen cabinets. Instead, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Zinsser CoverStain Primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Cover-Stain-1-qt-White-Oil-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-3504/100398403 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Can this be applied before spraying an acrylic urethane base coat or will there be compatibility issues?

Asked by KJ August 24, 2020
1
Answer

Good question KJ. Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Surfacer is an alkyd modified acrylic primer that is compatible with all Rust-Oleum Automotive paints. Since we do not test our products with non Rust-Oleum paints for compatibility, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of the acrylic urethane base coat to see if their coating can be applied to an acrylic primer. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Thanks for reaching out. For best results, the surface does need to be sanded prior to applying Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Surfacer. Sanding scarifies the surface, creating a profile for better adhesion of the primer. If possible, a light sanding will create a provide for the primer. When top coating, the primer does not need to be sanded. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

I need a 1 pack not a 2 pack. How do I get that?

Asked by MV July 14, 2020

Answer

We appreciate your interest! Due to shipping purposes, Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer may only be sold as a case online. If looking for individual cans, we recommend reaching out to your local store to see if they have the item in stock. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

If im painting a car from bare metal after the body work is done would I need to spray an epoxy primer before this or is this an epoxy primer?

Asked by Nick July 14, 2020

Answer

Thanks for reaching out Nick! Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Surfacer is an alkyd modified acrylic primer, it is not an epoxy. This is a smooth sanding filler primer that can be applied to bare metal or previously coated surfaces. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

We appreciate your interest! Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Surfacer is part of a system of a primer. base coat, and topcoat that must be applied together. For this reason, we don't recommend using this primer. Instead, we suggest using Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Rusty Metal Primer. Keep in mind that we do not recommend leaving any primers exposed without a top coat. Primers are very porous and if not top coated can eventually lead to peeling, chipping or chalking. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-1-qt-Flat-Rusty-Metal-Primer-7769502/100112883 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

It’s not as good as a 2k primer but it is definitely worth using. It does tend to settle at the bottom of the can. A paint mixer (drill attachment) takes care of this with ease. Sprays and builds great.

You can only use their thinner which is fast for cooler climates. They need to offer a slower thinner for here the temp. is around 100° and the paint is dry as it comes out the gun.

Uh no! Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Surfacer is ideal for improving adhesion of the final topcoat and enhancing paint’s color. To achieve these results our carbon black pigment require specific solvents, those solvents are included in Rust-OIeum Specialty Reducer which must be used for thinning to keep the characteristics of the coating. Applying spray paint when temperatures are above 90° F will result in the airborne paint drying before hitting the surface, which is why following all listed application temperatures on the label is essential. We appreciate your feedback about the products we offer and will be sure to pass it along to the proper teams for review.

Quick to build finish, very thick, settles in can quickly. You will need reducer to use this product. You have to stir can with electric drill before use in a new can because of high solids content settled. Picked up on 11-16-2018 and used on MDF as a sealer/ primer. Sands very well, dries very fast.

I could barely get the primer mixed up. It was all hard on the bottom of the can. I tried...but then took it to H.D. and had them put it in the shaker for 10 minutes. Helped some but I still had to pull hard solids off the bottom. Sprayed ok....but would not buy again.
