I used regular rust-oleum primer and spray paint on some plastic and fiber glass parts. Can I spray it with this now? I keep seeing answers where you say only on metal
Asked by: airplaneaddict67502
It could possibly have a chemical reaction. I would test a scrap peice 1st. Do 2 very light coats 1st kinda dust it. Then one medium coat to see how it acts. If no reaction your good to go. Dry paint throughout with a hair dryer or heat gun 1st, let cool. Wait an hour or so before applying clear just to be safe.

After painting a steering wheel with Rustoleum painters choice I used this to clear coat and it wrinkled the paint, I then called the company and asked if this was compatible and they assured me it was and that I had to wait to apply clear coat after 48 hours, ( I had waited 24hr's so my bad) I wet sanded cleaned the wheel and then waited 60 hr's and had the same wrinkling effect I re-sanded and painted the wheel and then waited five days just to make sure everything was dry and cured. I again clear coated the wheel with this clear enamel and it wrinkled most of the paint again. simply put if your clear coating another Rustoleum paint product this clear will ruin your job. And don't listen to anything their customer service has to say because they obviously don't know what they are talking about. This clear is not compatible with their other rattle can spray paints and the drying time is a bogus issue too (I live in CA so the weather was pretty warm)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Yellows over time I bought this product for my car hood, which i spent days stripping down to bare metal and re-painting thanks to clear coat failure that i let go way too long and ended up with some heavy rust i couldn't just paint over. So i stripped, primed, and painted, then clear coated with this product. I also used it to coat the rear bumper, which i didn't strip, but i did a lot of touch up spots there. The product went on well and looked nice. I did three coats, and did a high-grit wet sand between each coat to get a good shine. It's hard to get an even coat on such a large area from a spray can, but i didn't see any streaks... at first. After only 1 year, it's YELLOW. And when it yellowed, the streaks i knew were there (because the spray pattern is so small) showed up. Also, despite my sanding, the clear coat wasn't glossy enough to match the finish on the rest of my car from the beginning. I was willing to live with it because it was such an improvement over what it had been, but it nagged me. I bought this spray because it said Gloss and that it was for cars. Why would anyone want a clear coat that isn't glossy and turns yellow? I'm not exactly subjecting it to harsh conditions. I do keep the car outdoors, but i live in NJ. I noticed Rustoleum now has a an acrylic gloss paint that specifies it's non-yellowing. Why even produce a clear coat that isn't non-yellowing?
