I have a new home and the concrete floor in the basement is almost a year old. It is just bare concrete. Does the basement floor need to be etched?
Asked by: NewHomeInCO
Happy to clear things up! When applying the Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Basement Floor Coating Kit in a basement, we do not recommend etching the floor. Instead, we recommend removing any oil spots, grease, or spills and wash the floor with a suitable detergent or degreasing solution and rinse. Then wash the floor using Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Heavy-Duty Degreaser and allow the surface to completely dry before coating. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-EpoxyShield-1-qt-Cleaner-Heavy-Duty-Degreaser-Case-of-6-214382/203423889 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Do I need to add a clear coat over the basement kit

Asked by: Kim
Great question, Kim! A clear coat is not needed with Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Basement Floor Coating. Please keep in mind that this kit offers a satin finish and the EpoxyShield clear coats offer a high-gloss finish.

The description says case of 2. It also says it is one gallon. So, is it a case of two 1 gallon jugs or two 1/2 gal jugs

Does this apply to all rustoleum epoxy products
Asked by: Sweede
Yes, two - one gallon cans and two bags of specks

Does this "case of 2" cover a total of 500 square feet?

Asked by: Donna
Yes, mine was 400 and it covered it well and I put it down thick. I used 2 cases so I could do a 2nd coat

The instructions indicate coverage of 250 sf but I needed 1.75 bags to complete 200 sf. Had to roll extremely lightly to maximize coat thickness & was still inconsistent. Followed directions including scrubbing floor, etched with included chemical & rinsed multiple times. Let dry for 4 days before driving golf cart on it & immediately left tracks that can not be wiped off. Lastly, the box states the etch will not stain driveway which is completely false despite hosing 4+ times. Maybe this product would work on brand new concrete?

I used 2 cases, 4 kits. I put down a fairly thick 1st coat and allowed to dry for 8 hours. Then I put down an even heavier 2nd coat and sprinkled the specks on. For prep I rented Home Depot’s drum sander and filled as many cracks as I could then vacuumed with a shop vac really well. 24 hrs later it looks nice and no bubbles or lifting. Sure hope it last!

Moving the contents of the basement was the hardest part! Be sure to coat liberally and ventilation with fans was adequate for my particular basement, though may not be for all.
