Questions & Answers

Is this product applied with paint rollers, or squeegees?

The spec sheet indicates that you pour 1/2 the pail out and then spread with squeegees, not paint rollers like the similar Rustoleum driveway sealer products in smaller containers. APPLICATION ....Pour out 1⁄2 of the container and work the product across the blacktop using an 18-24" floor or driveway squeegee. Wondering if you can use paint rollers for this too?
Asked by: dg1966
Use 18" purdy 1/2 nap rollers. Product applies like paint. I had best success pouring out of container for best coverage and then rolling for smooth finish

How much area does it really cover?

I found a few websites that say it covers 800sq ft. Home Depots says 350sq ft. I have about 500sq ft to do. How many buckets will I need.
Asked by: Doityourselfme
It does not cover as much as you think or they say. My driveway as approximately 500 sq. ft. Took 2 full containers plus 25% of a third to completely cover. Looks great, fills small cracks, but for larger cracks use USeal, it's excellent !

Can it be used on reclaimed asphalt?

I had reclaimed asphalt installed under my outdoor carport after being told that it would be solid enough to drive my power wheelchairs on , but it isnt, the material is still loose, will the material become harder and more solid after application?
Asked by: Rick
We appreciate your interest, Rick! While Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Blacktop Filler and Sealer is suitable for use on asphalt, we do not recommend it for use on loose aggregate. This product will not bond loose particles to the surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

How does this sealer hold up to the typical friction from winter plowing, and the chains on the plow truck tires? Does it last longer than regular sealers or will it be the same with the plow and tire marks come spring, and will that affect it effectiveness?
Asked by: DB
When removing snow from driveways coated with our EpoxyShield Blacktop Filler and Sealer, we recommend keeping the plow close to the surface without dragging the plow blade across the sealer. chains may degrade the sealer more quickly than normal, causing gouges and chips in the surface after repeated use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from THE VERY BEST ON THE MARKET MY ASPHALT DRIVEWAY, 20' X 75' , WAS LAID ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO AND AFTER 1 YEAR OF CURING, I SEALED IT WITH THIS RUSTOLEUM PRODUCT. IT HAS LASTED 5 YEARS THUS FAR WITH NO PROBLEMS. I LIKE IT! NEAR AS BLACK TODAY AS WHEN I PAINTED IT ON. IF MEMORY SERVES, I USED 20 GALLONS INITIALLY AND ABOUT 12 ROLLERS. THE COVERAGE IS NOT VERY ACCURATE BUT I DID APPLY 2 COATS. IT STILL LOOKS GOOD AFTER 5 YEARS BUT TO KEEP FROM USING AS MUCH TO COVER, I AM THINKING OF PAINTING IT AGAIN ALTHOUGH I PROBABLY COULD WAIT A FEW YEARS LONGER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND RUSTOLEUM ASPHALT DRIVE SEALER. IT IS THE BEST ON THE MARKET. OH, FYI, THE COMPANY THAT LAID MY DRIVE WANTS 600 BUCKS TO SEAL IT!!! THAT FORCED ME TO DO IT MYSELF AND I AM VERY HAPPY THAT I DID. TAKE CARE OF YOUR ASPHALT :) !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very durable even through hard winter. Easy to spread and clean up. Was more expensive. Our neighbor did their driveway the same day and ours looks great but theirs didn't weather the hard winter nearly as well. Would recommend this product to do it your selfers who don't like sealing their driveways every 5 years.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not so good I opened the container to find that it was only 3/4 full. Then I followed all the directions, stirring, pouring, etc. and put on my driveway, but it set up almost instantaneously so I could not spread it anywhere near the recommendations. I would not use this again. expensive and didn't work as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from After sealing the same asphalt driveway for 34 years this is the best. While this is not the cheapest sealer it is the best. Due to imperfections in the driveway from its age, there is damage and depressions that cause the coating to puddle. This is the first sealer I have ever used where the material does not crack during the drying process and significantly fills the damaged areas. Please note give puddled areas a couple extra days to dry and I believe you will obtain excellent results. Traction of the material is outstanding.

I've been holding off rating this product for awhile to see how things worked out. I went out of my way to go with this due to the reviews and I wish I felt the same. Pros: Easy to apply, with roller or squeegee Water cleanup is fantastic No asphalt smell You really can walk on it after just over an hour I let it dry over 8 before moving my car and all is well. Cons 2 to 3 times the expense Need to special order It is starting to peel off with white dust visible below. Keep in mind I followed the instructions to a t and even powerwashed the driveway 2 times. Not at all happy. As far as coverage is concerned, my driveway was in average shape and it covered exactly what Rustoleum said it would. All in all not anywhere worth the money and I am afraid I will be re sealing cone spring.

I was looking to seal my 2yr old 1800sqft driveway with an acrylic sealer. I have a layer of finish mix over 3/4 mix, so the top surface of the driveway is fairly smooth. Preparation - I thoroughly pressure washed the driveway with a asphalt cleaner and patched all small holes or cracks with crack filler. Coating - We started in the morning at 8am, it was 80F. We used a 4" brush to edge the pavement and a 24" squeegee to spread the sealer. We noticed that the sealer was drying up faster, so we had to keep moving fast. We noticed that the coverage was about 40-50% of what Rust-Oleum suggests. I had ordered 10 buckets of this sealer thinking that I would return the extra ones, but we ended up using all of them. We ran out of sealer before we could complete the driveway. I now have to order one more bucket to seal the remaining 100sqft. Curing - I left the sealer on the pavement for the recommended 4 hours. The temperate had soared to 94F by 1pm. The sealer was dry, but it was soft. I could scratch it with my finger nail. I left the sealer for 2 full days and didn't walk or drive over it. I can see lots of squeegee marks on my driveway. While a lot of it could be my bad technique, I think the hot weather dried up the sealer faster than it would have taken it to enter the pores and level itself. Recommendation - Apply it on a cool day, even if it means you have to start sealing at 6AM. If its more than 80F, the asphalt will be a lot warmer. Spray a mist of water on the asphalt to cool it. Plan to buy 2.5x the material if your driveway is very porous or never sealed. If you end up with unused buckets, they can be returned. It's better to have extra material than run our of it during sealcoating.

Will see what it looks like in the spring. It does fill in small cracks and smooth the surface. I am a little concerned that it will crack over time given it doesn't appear that flexible, but I don't know yet. Speaking of cracks...the best crack filler I have us called U Seal ! A bit difficult to handle because you have to heat and reheat it, but it is rubberized and flexible and does an excellent job !
