do you need to use a primer on bare wood before using this paint

I want to paint wicker and there is bare wood and want to know if I need to use primer first

I've never heard of someone wanting to spray paint natural wicker but if it's painted wicker, stiff brush any peeling or flaking areas, brush and wipe the residue clean, match the color, spray it and let it dry more than the minimum time if any bare or porous areas.

Used this to prime some bare/sanded wood in my laundry room cabinet after a plastic bottle sprung a leak and made a mess. Scraping and sanding resulted in some bare wood, so before painting it was necessary to spot prime. Since I was going to use Rustoleum Painter's Touch gloss white paint, I decided to use the same brand primer. It went on OK though it took 2 coats to satisfactorily cover the bare wood. (No surprise since multiple thin coats are better than one heavy coat.) Rattle cans like this ALWAYS have some overspray, but I noticed that this was FAR worse than with most other canned primers and paints - it spread out and left a powdery dry layer of what looked like talcum powder on every surface within 3 feet of where I was spraying - glad I'd spread a dropcloth first! It ultimately seemed to work OK, but I had to wipe the rest of the cabinet down with a damp cloth before painting.

I needed about 4 cans to get adequate coverage on each chair (8 cans total). The paint is cracking and peeling after a year (see photos). I have similar plastic lawn chairs that I painted with Krylon- required much less paint for full coverage, and no signs of cracking or peeling after 4 years. This stuff is crap. Bring back Krylon! I'll go elsewhere to buy Krylon to do the job right.

(French Lilac) - This is a great color, I used it to paint a desk frame and chair for my daughter. She loves the color! The satin finish is also perfect for furniture, just a very light shine to it. I painted 2 coats and touch-ups, in the high 80s with somewhat high humidity outside. It was hottest for the first coat and I had some blistering/roughness of the paint so I used a fine sand pad to smooth it out before the second coat. I gave each coat 24 hours to dry. The majority of the odor was gone 48 hours after the second coat. I have used Rust-Oleum spray paint a lot over the years. The spray tip on these cans always works great for me and I get great results. Of note, have a lint-free rag on you when spraying; if you get a drip you can immediately wipe it with good results.

I have used literally 100s of cans of Rusto 2x over the years and I have never been disappointed. A huge selection of gorgeous colors gives you endless possibilities. I have used it on many different surfaces and as long as you follow the directions on the can, you will not be disappointed! Properly prep, recoat WITHIN one hr., and give it plenty of time to dry. (humidity and number/thickness of coats will take longer to dry and harden so be patient!)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from stay away from these Had a project to restore a cabinet, used this specific brand they are horrible, the nozzle does not spray consistently and it’s sucks, as you have to apply many coats before everything is covered. If you try to overlap each pass the paint runs and if you do not overlap you have to respray the in between spots that were not covered. If you get this spray can buy different nozzles. And all of this is staying away from the panel at least 13’’

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Applies to most materials Used this product a number of times in a number of colors. This review covers GLASS BLACK. Preparation is key for best results. Clean, sand & prepare the surface. Primer is recommended followed by another sanding; re-prime as necessary. Clean all sanding dust & oils from the surface. Shake well. Spray in a well-ventilated area with little to no breeze. Apply at a distance of about 12-18 inches with smooth, overlapping strokes. Apply a "tack coat" (light coat) and allow it to dry for about 5-10 minutes followed by a slightly heavier coat. Don't try to apply your coverage in 1 or even 2 coats; you run a risk of having runs in the paint. Plan on applying 3 or more coats with a light sanding between coats as needed. You can achieve a shiny, reflective black surface if done correctly. Allow paint to cure thoroughly before handling. Product has good coverage.

This is a dark purple; sprays on well and has the tough coat I have come to expect from Rust-Oleum. Dries in 20 minutes under ideal conditions. If its colder, the smell can stick around for awhile. Covers 12 sq ft but always get extra cans!
