If you choose to, you'll want to apply the clear within one hour of the color coat, or wait about 48–72 hrs to ensure wrinkling doesn't occur. Q:I'm using the "satin" finish and painted a metal wall register and the paint came out like it was textured. Now the surface has a sandy like finish. What is the best way to fix this to make it smooth again? (I shook the can vigorously for one minute)

A: Happy to help! It sounds like you're experiencing dry spray with Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint. This is when the product dries before it hits the surface of your project. This occurs most often when users hold the can too far from the surface when spraying - our recommendation is 10-16" from the surface. Effects of dry spray can also happen when temperatures are too high or too low. You can try using a lint free rag, slightly damp, and gently wipe the surface to remove the dusting. If it's still rough after doing that, you'll want to sand the surface with a 180 or 220 grit sandpaper and make sure it's clean and dry before recoating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

2X coverage is a joke

I use spray paint pretty regularly so I know how far a can should go. I got through less than 2 coats on 6 short 1x2s. That’s like a quarter of the coverage I would expect, not 2X!

Had some problems

I bought the "satin" version of this paint. Even though I vigorously shook the can for one minute before spraying the paint came out like it was textured. What the heck? Plus the sheen looks more flat than satin. Having the sandy texture doesn't help that though. Really disappointed with this paint. Pretty much ruined the vent cover, aesthetically. I saw other one star reviews describing this same problem.

Second coat problems

I thought this was a great paint at first. Used it in a night stand with good results. Painted outside with multiple coats, mostly within an hour or so of each coat. Did a matching dresser and did a second coat the next day and had the dreaded crackle reaction. Sanded the problem areas and tried another coat with the same results. I am an experienced painter/ floor finisher. I’ve never seen a product peel from itself so easily. It happened right away. It seems you must do all coats at once.
