Does Rustoleum professional aluminum primer bond well with Rustoleum protective enamel topcoat? ...

Answer

Thank you for reaching out! Keep in mind that these coatings will not reach full hardness and adhesion for 7-10 days, so further curing time may be needed prior to testing for scratch resistance. Our Rust-Oleum Professional Aluminum Primer is compatible with our Stops Rust Protective Enamel Sprays. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Thank you for reaching out, Eric! Rust-Oleum Professional Aluminum Primer Spray contains acrylic polymer resins. Since this is an aerosol product, it does contain solvents. We recommend applying in a test area first to ensure favorable results. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

In response to Rustoleum support team: Thank you for the clarification and link to a specific product I can use. However, in the Details in Specifications (see attached image), it says surface use type galvanized metal. So when you say I shouldn't use this product (for the galvanized steel mailbox) is it because the base material is oil based and the one you suggested Zinsser (Model # 2004) is water based? Thanks.

What is the best primer to use for stainless steel. The Self etching Primer or the Aluminum Primer?

Asked by Steve September 23, 2020

Answer

Good question, Steve. The Rust-Oleum Professional Aluminum Primer Spray will perform best over aluminum surfaces, but will be able to adhere to stainless steel as well. We would recommend using the Rust-Oleum Automotive Self Etching Primer instead for the best results. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

I would be set it as the second primer as it makes a very nice flat surface and covers very uniformly for the final coat. But as always. Test an area first as you never know how it will react in your situation. Good luck.

Answer

Glad to help out, Mike. Rust-Oleum Professional Aluminum Primer can be applied as long as any loose or peeling paint is sanded away and the surface is cleaned with soap and water. Keep in mind that prolonged exposure to water and high moisture levels can cause the paint to wear more quickly. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

This was only purchased due to clearance pricing. It definitely makes the Professional (Aluminum) extremely vibrant. I would suggest this if you'd like to add a realistic look to a metallic faux finish.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportApr 23, 2021
It sounds like the nozzle was clogged. Inside each can of Rust-Oleum Professional Primer Spray is a dip tube that pulls the paint from the bottom of the can to the tip. If the pigment in the paint is too big or if there's not enough pressure behind it, it can get stuck in the tube or tip and the paint won't spray. Try turning the can upside down and spraying for a few seconds. If the clog is in the tip, soaking it in mineral spirits should clear it out.
