Hi, I have a wooden deck and I replaced about half of the boards with new treated wood (3 months ago). Can I use product all over? any specifics about new treated wood? My idea is to paint it not to stain it if it makes any difference. Thanks
Asked by: Angelo
I have a pressure treated deck that is 25 years old. I pressure washed it thoroughly and waited for a few days. I was surprised by how good the wood looked before using the primer. I didn't have the success that I expected using the primer and the stain. The wood for the decking was so hard the primer wouldn't penetrate. So in the end the primer and the paint peeled off. The manufacturer says not to prime or stain new pressure treated wood. I would have to agree unfortunately. I wasted a lot of time and money using this product only to have to try something else on the decking. The railings are fine no peel at all. The decking is a premium pressure treated wood. I don't think paint or stain will stay on without peeling. I guess I will have to find another product and pray.

HI I applied the primer to new wood, not weathered. Can I proceed with the top coat, or what other options are there?
Asked by: Stella
When I did it I weathered the deck for one year. Then I put the primer on. Then waited a couple of weeks and put the deck stain on. I have used this method for several coatings over 12 years. It looks good for about 3 years and starts to peel a little in the high wear areas in about 5 years.

Can this be used over old paint that has started chipping if the loose chips are scrapped?

Asked by: Trent
That is what the directions say. I put this on over raw wood and old, scraped paint but probably won't know how well it works til the spring. One thing I will say is that the primer seems to cover quite well and seems to be a little "elastic" which means it adheres well to what's under it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wood primer not what I expected I was surprise this primer looked like wallpaper paste and was thick like that but it spread real easy. I used it on some newer wood never painted and some older that had been painted it looked almost like a varnish on the new wood seemed to seal it really well. The older wood it looked like it had a blueish tint to it but it seemed to seal that really well also. I top coated it with 2x Restore that I had tinted Cashew and I put two coats of that down my old steps and landing look like new. Next doing the deck

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Purchase of ALL TIME! This primer is the all time deck restoring primer. It is nessesary product to use before applying the Rustoleum Deck & Concrete Restore 4x. There have been many reviews that the Rustoleum Deck & Concrete Restore 4x started to chip and that was only because they did not apply this primer. We applied this to our old deck that was not kept up by the previous owner and recieved the result we had hoped for. We highly recommend this product to anyone for old decks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use the Primer, then the Paint! Redid the deck last year and was concerned about the negative reviews. When I bought the deck paint, the HD paint woman said that you must use the primer too. So we did. After winter, no chips,no stains, no scratches from outside furniture; just great clean smooth surface. We did the front porch this spring and expect the same results. My tip: Use the primer, then the paint. duh!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes! It worked great. I was reluctant at first to use this product prior to the Deck Restore 10X due in part to a Lowe's Home Improvement employee telling me it wasn't necessary. However, I read some of the older reviews about the Deck Restore 10x not lasting and this product was introduced as a result. I'm very happy that I used the primer first. I have not had any issues with the layers of 10x on top of it, even after all the rain. The product applied as expected and I'm happy with the results.
