Questions & Answers

Does this need a primer?
ByMay 16, 2025

Answer This Question

Paul, we are here to help! No, it is not recommended to apply a primer. It is best for Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint to be applied directly on the metal surface. Ensure the surface is cleaned and sanded as directed per the label on the can. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

can you use this on a stainless steel vent hood over a range? is it able to be cleaned without the paint coming off?
    ByMay 3, 2025
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Jenna, great question! Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint is intended for use on metal surfaces that will be exposed to high indirect heat, like the exterior of a grill or fire pit. Instead, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint. This paint can resist heat up to 200°F. Like with other spray paints, it must be applied in a space with proper air ventilation and circulation, such as outdoors or in an open garage. Once fully cured, you are able to clean the surface with a non-abrasive cleaner, as this will not remove paint from the surface. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Custom-Spray-5-in-1-Flat-Black-Spray-Paint-376855/323255175 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Can you use this spray paint on metal that is minorly rusted?
      ByApr 20, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Absolutely! Before painting with Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint, remove any loose paint or rust with a wire brush or sandpaper. Once the surface has been sanded and is thoroughly clean and dry, apply 2 or more light coats a few minutes apart. Heat curing is required for temperature use over 500°F. To improve performance and durability, heat cure at 450°F for one hour. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Plan to use on my smoker but I"m concerned about the 'curing at 400 degree' thing. Not sure I can get it up to that temp?

                Answer This Question

We're happy to clear things up, Mike. If your surface will not be exposed to temperatures that surpass 500°F, Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint does not need to be heat cured and will instead fully cure after 72 hours. Please also note that we still recommend running your smoker once or twice to make sure the coating has fully cured before exposing it to regular use. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

                  Gray vs Black
While the coverage was pretty good, The color is not. It's in the black family but, not true black. Its more like dark gray

                    Worked perfectly for Weber
Living in the southern US and sometimes forgetting to put the cover back, both sides of our Weber grill were showing serious weathering. Before and after pics attached. I probably could have sanded or scraped the sides before spraying but still looks way better. Color is very matte, no shine at all, which I really like

Bought this to revitalize our fire pit ring. It was looking sad. Once my round grate comes, it will be like new again!

I use it for Black-out on Corvette exhaust systems. On my restoration projects. It lasts very long and a lot less expensive then auto exhaust paint. I’ve been using it for years

                      Won't cure unless @ 230C for 1 hr
Will not cure properly unless it’s heated to 230C for 1hr. If you don't, the finish dries powdery/ chalky and smudges when touched. I painted my electric fireplace because the part with a heater built in can get a little hot. Many others have said the same in reviews, Rustoleum says “oops buy a different product.” I can’t heat my electric fireplace to 230C. If it requires this treatment it should say so on the BOTTLE. No mention whatsoever anywhere, and you only find out after reading reviews. Why can’t they just put it on the bottle?
