Questions & Answers

how can I get "Glow in the Dark"paint to glow better?

I am painting a space mural in a little boy's room, the walls and ceiling are a medium blue/gray. I used three coats of flat ceiling white to paint the stars so they would be completely white. After stirring the paint thoroughly, getting all of the sediment off of the bottom.... I put two coats of the "Glow in the Dark" paint on the stars & they only glow a little bit. The room is rather dark, does not get a lot of sunlight and the lights in the room are not bright. Is there a certain bulb that will make the paint glow better?
Asked by: artsea
Phosphorescence (glow) materials only charge from ultra violet (UV) light. A regular incandescent light bulb emits a large spectrum of light, only a small percent of that is UV. Florescent light bulbs most always have a phosphor coating to filter UV, so an even smaller percent if any at all. They'll charge glow paint, but very ineffectively. Easy answer: Blacklight bulbs and UV LEDs are what really charge up glow-in-the-dark material.

Does the paint dry clear or does it show a coloration of the surface on which it is painted?

I want to use this to make a starry sky for my son's room, over a blue surface, and I hope that the glow material will not be visible during the day, only at night while it is glowing.
Asked by: Dragontech64
I have only noticed a small film that darkens the original color slightly.

I will be using this paint under a black light. Will it still need to be "charged"?

Asked by: Theatermom
To ensure the best results with Rust-Oleum Specialty Glow in the Dark Paint, the surface does need to change under a light source to glow. Instead, Rust-Oleum Specialty Fluorescent Spray Paint may be a better choice for your application under a black light. https://www.homedepot.com/b/Rust-Oleum-Specialty/N-5yc1vZ8l5/Ntk-tagger/Ntt-fluorescent%2Bspray?NCNI-5&storeSelection=1938,6981,1926,1927,1952 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Rated 5 out of 5 by from got me glowing My project was to produce signs for parking at a local business with not much lighting at night, so we devised a plan to use glow in the dark paint. Rustoleum has always done the job I needed and it worked again! Although my first attempt was not so successful due to all the glowing agent was settled in bottom and I should have stirred more intently; my second and third cans were a total success. The paint really does glow! It also benefits to "charge" in the sunlight. I recommend this product if you want to get glowing too. :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time and money I bought a can of this because I'm in the middle of building a beer pong table, and thought it would be sharp looking for the lines on the table in low light. The box shows pictures of purple walls and furniture with this paint glowing on them. The back says "IMPORTANT: USE OVER A WHITE OR LIGHT COLORED SURFACE." Which one is it? Anyway, no problem there, at least for me, as I was going to paint the lines white and then put a few coats of this over the top of them. Not exactly trusting the conflicting information on the box and can of this stuff, I decided to test it out first. Good thing I did. First, I did the recommended two coats on a piece of scrap wood painted with white latex paint. Then, I left it in a brightly lit garage all day, and checked it that night. The inside of the garage was black as pitch with all doors closed, and no glow at all. I then added two more coats the next morning (TWICE as much as Rust-oleum recommends). After it dried, I placed it out in direct sunlight almost all day long. An hour or so before sunset, I tested it again same way as the night before. Very, very faint glow, if you could call it that at all. Bottom line is, this product does not work as advertised. Don't waste your valuable time and money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Worth It I bought this to paint the outside of a round flower pot. It goes on like glue. I paint 3 coats and it leaves a dull finish. I put the pot in the direct sunlight, 3 days in a row. Nothing, not even slightly a simmer of illumination. Maybe I got an old can, but it didn't work at all for me.
