Q:Customers here have complained the paint is too thick. Is that what makes this paint a 'door' paint...so you don't have to take the door down to paint it? If you take the door down, would a basic enamel paint be better (horizontal surface)?

Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for reaching out Steve. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door Paint is formulated to dry quickly so you can mount and close your door in no time. If necessary, thin the material with xylene, thin no more than 5% by volume. Use a 6½” shed-resistant roller with a ⅜” nap or a high quality brush with flagged (split) ends. For best results, use the roller to paint the entire door or paint the recessed edges of raised panels and then use the roller for the remaining flat surfaces. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

            Great color!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like the color it's amazing! It dried on the door quickly. I haven't seen any peeling from the sun so far. I would recommend at least two coats of the paint you can do more if you want more of a semi darker color. Has a strong smell to it.

              Enhanced my Front Door
This was the first time I had attempted to change the color of my front door as it was a dark brown. I was looking to change it to cranberry red. I first applied painter's tape around the window and then sanded the door with a fine block and then I primed the door with a Kilz primer. After letting it dry, I used a Wooster roller brush set and a paintbrush to complete the painting. Be careful to at least place a towel to catch any drips!

                Follow-up to my May 27, 2020 review
Rustoleum reimbursed me for my purchase. It is now 18 months later and the paint is flaking off in big pieces. This door is fully covered by a porch roof and no wind-blown rain ever reaches it. I will use regular Rust-Oleum paint to repaint it.

We are glad to hear that you were able to get a refund from our support team for this issue. It is odd to see this type of wear and tear after such a short span of time. Our Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door Paint is designed to last for many years when adhered to a properly prepared substrate. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum
                  Stay away from this paint!!!
I used this paint on my front door and it is awful. It was horrible to work with (had the consistency of tar) and all tools used went straight to the trash along with the leftover paint. It ruined everything. Never ever will I use this paint again and will definitely look for alternatives before using another Rustoleum product. Finished product looks horrendous and now I need to spend hours to strip it down and try again with another product. So disgusted. What a waste!!

Let's talk about this! If needed, Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door Paint can be thinned with up to 5% of volume with xylene. This is particularly recommended for warmer temperatures.

Do NOT use this paint! Very disappointing!
After painting two steel doors, I would strongly recommend that you NOT use the Rust-Oleum Door Paint. Its ONLY advantage is that it dries quickly enough that you can paint your door in the morning and hang it before the sun goes down. Instead, I strongly recommend you use normal Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel paint and plan to have your door off the hinges for several days to allow it to dry. You will be much happier with the result. TL;DR - After reading all the reviews, I took special pains to prepare my two steel doors. For both doors I ground off all old paint and loose rust. For the first door I cleaned it thoroughly then applied a coat of Rust-Oleum Red Primer. After letting it dry for a full day I applied a second coat of primer and let it dry a full day again. On the first door I used a Whizz 6-in Cabinet and Door Mini Paint Roller with 3/8-in Mini Woven Synthetic Blend Paint Roller Covers and disposable 15"x9" roller tray liners. Before use I ran the roller covers over the sticky side of packing tape multiple times to remove any loose lint, but there were still a lot of particles/threads left on the door when I applied the primer. Before applying the Rust-Oleum Door Paint I ran the roller over packing tape a few extra times. I laid the door across two sawhorses outside, in the shade, with an air temp of 70 degrees with 45% humidity. I stirred the door paint for almost 10 minutes. It had a strong solvent smell and was the consistency of milk (be sure to have good ventilation, use Xylene for cleanup not paint thinner). While painting it dries very quickly. Work in small sections at a time, don't go over it very much once you've applied the paint, and be careful to not leave areas of thick paint. It works better to apply two (or three) light coats instead of one heavy coat. The roller left lots of particles in the paint and lots of tiny bubbles that solidified before they could deflate. Don't try to clean the paint tray and roller cover, just throw them away. For the next coat (24 hours later), I ran the roller over packing tape quite a few times, but I still got threads and bubbles in the paint when I rolled it on. Not only that, only minutes after applying the second coat the paint started to wrinkle. In a few minutes the entire surface of the door was covered with 'alligator skin' as well as more tiny bubbles. The label says it can be recoated in 24 hours, but apparently that wasn't long enough and the solvent in the second coat interacted with the first coat. Very disappointing! I decided to work harder on the second door. I bought different roller covers ('Linzer, Best, 6 x 3/8" Woven Mini Roller - 2 Pk', $5 at Walmart) and rolled them over packing tape. These roller covers had very few loose fibers, very different than the Whizz rollers. I applied the same Rust-Oleum Red Primer, waited two days, applied a second primer coat, and waited more than 48 hours. I cleaned the door scrupulously, let it dry completely, then used a dry tack cloth. I stirred the door paint for over 10 minutes before applying it. This time there were almost no fibers, but there were still many tiny bubbles. Because it dries so fast, the bubbles solidify before they can deflate. Also, only a few minutes after applying the paint there were quite a few places where the paint wrinkled up into alligator skin, which surprised me. I waited more than 48 hours to let the first coat fully cure, then I applied a second coat of paint which caused more wrinkling. Finally, I was so disgusted with the door paint that I decided to NOT use it on the inside of the second door. Instead I used the red primer and standard Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel paint and didn't have any problems - it's beautiful. So now I have two shiny doors (it's a semi-gloss finish even though it claims to be satin) with a rough/wrinkled finish and hundreds of tiny bubbles. I would NEVER recommend this paint to anybody! In my opinion, in should be pulled from Home Depot shelves because it doesn't meet the high quality we've come to expect from Rust-Oleum.

It sounds like you experienced a wrinkling reaction between the two coats of our Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door Paint. Our Door Paint may be recoated after 24 hours, however, factors such as thick coats, low temperatures, or high humidity may cause slower curing times, leaving the previous coat susceptible to wrinkling. Worst paint ever
We painted our front door and found this paint to be impossible to work with. It left streaks and would not lay flat. I’m left with the task of spending hours stripping down the entire door and finding a replacement paint.

Oh no, this is not what we like to hear Daniel! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door Paint is designed to
provide excellent color retention, chip resistance, and protection on exterior and interior door surfaces. Formulated to dry quickly so the door can be rehung shortly after painting. If thinning is needed, thin up to 5% by volume with xylene. For best results use a 6½” shed-resistant roller with a ⅜” nap or a high quality brush with flagged (split) ends.

Very Satisfied, had never used this product. My door looks like a brand new one. Product very friendly, didn't need to buff, put primer or anything. All I did was clean door and start painting. On inside part only had to give it one hand, Two in the outside because wood was very dry. Very recommendable.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This paint is so rich and vibrant in color! It’s the perfect color for any season of the year! This paint was very easy to use and apply. I love how this paint does not rust! Rusting has always been a problem with my paint and this paint lasts longer! The paint is high quality and perfect in two layers!
