We used the spray version of this paint on a large piece of sheet metal used in front of our outdoor fireplace. The spray can was very difficult to use. It was impossible to get an even coat and we only got the hammered effect in a few places even after using 2 cans. Would like to use the canned version applied with a roller instead. Just wondering if it would adhere.
Asked by: PaintProblem
Thank you for reaching out! Yes, Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Paint is suitable for use on metal surfaces and can be applied with a roller. If the surface is galvanized, you will first want to prime the surface with a water-based primer to ensure full adhesion. We recommend Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer! https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-5-gal-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2000/100398392 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

We did not try a door. The paint did not drip for us. However, we did apply two thin coats instead of trying to cover everything with one thick coat.

1 qt. Gray Hammered Rust Preventive Paint (2-Pack) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 234.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Paint Gun application Bought a large old safe, I needed something that would hide the old ugly epoxy paint that looked like alligator skin. The safe has ~ 160 sq feet in area. 2 quarts were barely enough but the safe now looks great and 99% of the old defects are hidden. I used a HVLP paint gun with a 1.5 tip. Thinning the paint 20% with xylene allowed me to actually get the paint out of the gun, even then the paint comes out spitting and sputtering (but looked correct on the surfaces). I had a couple of runs but I plan on waiting a week then sanding those areas and respraying them. One warning, after thinning the paint became a lighter shade of black that the aerosol paint does not match. Xylene seems the best product for clean up and thinning, lacquer thinner and other paint thinners had little effect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks like real copper, long lasting I painted a mailbox and a section of gutters and downspout with this material and they look like they're made of copper, but without the patina or tarnish. After two years both the mailbox, which is in the sun, and the gutters/downspouts, which are in the shade, show no sign of wearing off or changing color. The one down side could be that the product is not water-based, so brush cleaning could be a hassle. I solve that by using inexpensive brushes and daily when I'm finished I put the brush into a plastic sandwich bag and put it in the freezer. Then the next time I use that color I retrieve the brush from the freezer, thaw it out, and continue.

I used this paint to refinish an older single person jet ski and an aluminum boat. It really requires at least 2 coats. Although you can fairly easily see that I painted with a brush attributable to over-brushing larger surfaces. it still looks pretty good. I have used the spray versions of this paint before, but the hammered metal look is much less pronounced than it is when applied with a brush. After I covered everything with two coats of this paint, I applied a top coat of semi-gloss spar varathane, so the finish will be better protected from the weather. The finished product looks great, but neither item I painted has been used in the lake yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish I could upload a photo of my storm... I wish I could upload a photo of my storm door - it was butt ugly! Plain white, flat UGLY. I mitered some trim to add detail at the bottom of the door, then painted the entire door with the hammered copper....it is beautiful! This paint is a little different then regular paint, it is engineered to run, that gives it the hammered look. You should back check your work for real runs. It will definitely need 2 coats, and it smells pretty bad so make sure you are working in a ventilated space. 1 quart goes a long way, I painted the storm door, inside and out, a mail box, 4 outdoor light fixtures and a flower pot and drainage tray. All got 2 coats and I still have about a quarter of a can left. I liked it so much that I decided that I am going to paint my ceiling fan instead of replacing it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible paint ! Not designed to be rolled or brushed on. Worse finish I have ever seen from paint. Starts to dry immediately, way too fast. I tried to touch it up with can of spray paint the EXACT same color. Made it worse. I didn't think that was possible. Maybe if you thinned it out and used a professional spray gun it might come out better, but I wouldn't put money on it. Never been let down by a Rustoleum product before, but this one sure did.

I used a paint brush so I could get a nice textured look. I turned the brush side to side as I painted after the first two coats. It took three coats on our fiberglass door. In my opinion, it was a little too sticky but overall a great product. I only used 3/4 of a can for the door.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick Turnaround This paint color was not in the store. Actually most colors are not in the store. You had to place a special order and the minimum was 6 quarts. I was glad to find it online where I could buy only 2. Because the second coat was not done within 4 hours I have to wait 7 days to apply the second coat. Hard to tell what the final coverage will look like but I think it will be OK.

The co.or is actually a charcoal gray even though it says hammered black. The co.or is fantastic. If you want truly black hammered, you would have to use the spray cans. Those are actually black. I much prefer the charcoal color of the 1qt cans.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the color discribed or listed. There are two colors in the brown family on the rust oleum color pallet. I painted steel railings with the "brown" hammered finish. After installing them I decided I wanted a darker brown so I ordered the "dark bronze" paint and painted two additional sections. The colors are indistinguishable from each other. The dark bronz is just brown. And yes, I checked the cans. The only paint can used for the second set was labeled "dark bronze". Yes, it was mixed properly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Convenient order and purchase I always use Rustoleum hammered paint for my projects. I often have to purchase the spray cans because the hammered paint is hard to find in liquid form. I like to apply it with a sprayer, so finding it through Home Depot made it convenient for me to purchase and use. Rustoleum paint is an excellent product and I found it available in the colors I needed. I will continue to order and purchase my supply of Rustoleum paint through Home Depot.com.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product The best paint have ever used for outdoor metal furniture. The hammered black finish provides a classy finish and the rust retardant feature of the paint lasts for years even uncovered in our Northern climate. I used this paint on my furniture five years ago and just finished a redo a couple of weeks ago. Most of the pieces are almost 40 years of age and you would never know it. Be sure to use the hammered black for best appearance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I used this in my spray gun and the finish... I used this in my spray gun and the finish came out much better than I anticipated. I didn't really need to thin it but I did put just enough xylol in it to scare it and the finish layed down just beautifully. I highly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Painted shower metal enclosure Absolutely love this paint. After a month of daily use it still looks fabulous. Do the prep: clean the metal real good first let dry and then sand the metal litely with a very fine sandpaper. Give it 2 coats and let dry 24 hours before using the shower. It looks like a brand new shower. I am now thinking about painting my sink top. I also used the same paint on the showerhead and it looks fabulous!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Stuff This paint is a good tough coating if applied properly. I never tried spraying but I'm sure if you get that technique down it would be a excellent looking and a durable finish. I brushed a 16ft flatbed trailer and it turned out pretty good. It blends in good when touching up. This is a Xylol based product so cleanup is not easy. I would recommend to someone who is experienced with oil based paints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Use of hammered paint on walls. This is the second time I have used hammered paint on my walls. The first time on our kitchen walls with the spray can and then I found this in the can and used it in lieu of an expensive backsplash. Looks great with the stainless steel appliances. I highly recommend trying this product. If you purchase the forged/hammered paint, it is darker than just the hammered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I just wish they made this hammered paint in gallon... I just wish they made this hammered paint in gallon size. This is by far the best durable paint I have ever used! I use it on mainly on trailers, truck beds, and tools! I have never use paint that can take a beating like it can

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I needed! Used this product in the battery compartment of a diesel pusher motorhome. I took the batteries out and pulled the tray and cleaned everything up and then painted everything. The hammered effect was nice since we bought this unit used and it needed the clean up. Effect was not so severe that it looked cheesy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This paint looks amazing on everything! I used this paint on Banister rails and to paint flooring and it looks amazing. I also used it on a table and chairs to change the leg color and it goes on easy and stays with no prep work at all. I have even more projects planned for this type of paint and will be purchasing other colors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Professional Finish but Unlike some reviews I found this paint to be good. The mailbox and lamppost I painted matched a wrought iron handrail I had installed to a tee. The paint goes on better in drier conditions, dries quickly and doesn't have the same sq. ft. coverage as a regular color of Rustoleum.
