Questions & Answers

What is the difference between this form and the automotive form of rust remover?

The automotive form appears identical but costs a few cents more. #248658
Asked by: ReviewerInMD
This is a primer, not a rust remover. This product should be used on metal before it rusts. If there is heavy rust, you should sand it or use a rust remover to get rid of the rust, and then coat it with Rust-oleum primer. Again, it is not a rust remover. btw, if the rust is too bad to removed, then use a product called Rust Mort. It coats the rust and seals it. Then you can paint over it. That said, it's best to remove the rust, if possible, with wire brushes, sandpaper, and a lot of elbow grease, and then coat it with Rust-oleum primer. You can paint over a little bit of rust with the product, but the bad, extensive rust should be removed before spraying it with this primer.

If you're new to Rust -oleum products, my unbiased view from my numerous experiences with this product is that it's excellent. I'm in my mid-sixties. My father taught me to use this on all metals when I was 13. We coated a lawnmower deck in 1964. That lawn mower died but the deck set around for 20 yrs in the rain. NO RUST. I've used this on an above ground swimming pool liner tracks in 1997. I disassembled it in 2015 and there was NO RUST. There are are probably 50 - 75 more times I've used this product over the years after my father first introduced it to me. My latest use is today, July 15, 2017. I'm painting steel ramps that I bought for $50 from Rural King. They look great, but will rust over time. I wrote a review on Rural King telling people to use Rust-oleum primer and touch up scrapes when they occur. Those ramps will outlast my life expectancy because I painted them with Rust-oleum primer.

I have a two wheel trailer that had been sitting neglected for about 5 years. I took the wheels off used a wire brush on the worst spots and sprayed them down with the rust reformer. Last week I used the trailer to bring home a 6x6 fence section I had ordered.

Was contemplating what to do about the dull, rusty wrought iron porch railings at the home I purchased 14 months ago: should I replace them with new black aluminum or new composite style rails at great expense? The old railings were pretty sturdy and only needed a couple masonry screws to secure a couple of connections. I decided to spray paint the railing GLOSS BLACK as a stop-gap measure until I made a final decision. I lightly sanded the rusty posts and wiped the entire railing with a damp cloth to remove dust and cobwebs. At Home Depot I bought Rust-oleum Rust Reformer to spray the posts and followed up with Rust-oleum Professional (industrial strength) spray enamel in GLOSS BLACK. I used a drop cloth under the railings, a long piece of cardboard, painter's tape and newspaper to protect the house bricks from overspray. It only took about 2 and one half hours and it dried super fast! The front porch wrought iron railings LOOK SO GOOD now that I will certainly keep them for as long as I can!

Time will tell, but even the heavily rusted areas that I prepped look as good as the areas that were not rusted. Easy to apply. Sprayed evenly at all angles except upside down, which is understandable. I will use it on all future projects with restoring rusted items.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works well I used Rust Oleum Stops Rust to prime an old shed. It covered well and acted as good primer. My only complaint is that the spray pattern could be a little more broad.
