Questions & Answers

do I have to remove the sink?

Asked by: kgaia1
No, it's not necessary to remove the sink. Tape around it.

Before using Rust-Oleum® Countertop Transformations, how does the countertop have to be prepped?

Asked by: jz
Before starting, you do have to fill in any chips in the counter, or any gaps between the counter and backsplash, using an epoxy plumbers putty. Once it dries, you then sand all surfaces of the counter with the included diamond embedded sanding block, until the surfaces have fine scratches all over them. After vacuuming the surface and cleaning thoroughly, you are then ready to apply the adhesive and the color chips. It is actually very simple, but is messy.

Customer Reviews

70 oz. Desert Sand Large Countertop Kit is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 241.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Product! We started with the Rustoleum Countertop Transformation kit - pebbled ivory. It was amazing and after that my wife hated the cabinets even more! So I went out and bought the Cabinet Transformations Dark kit and had it tinted to chocolate. We used the decorative glaze, which I recommend, but like several reviews suggested I chose to do 3 coats of Minwax Polycrylic (rustoleum makes it). In retrospect I think I'd have tried the top coat that is included since I think it's Minwax top coat 3x (1 coat = 3 thinner coats) and would've saved me a lot of time. It takes a long time and requires a lot of patience but the results are great. I added trim pieces to the top of each door and hardware to erase any signs of that hardwood grip piece and then did the tiled backsplash right over the old tile. I also switched out the old white sink and replaced the faucet (added a garburator too!) and we got a new kitchen for about $1500 - actually a little less. I highly recommend both products!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product to update ugly laminate countertops Easy but messy. This products requires almost zero brain capacity to actually use. We bought 2 large Onyx packs to use on our countertops and it was more than enough. The sanding was easy enough. The base coat we did in sections around the kitchen working in a pair, one did trim paint, the other did the rolling, and that worked out really well for us. The decorative chips get EVERYWHERE. Highly recommend you make sure to put down drop cloths, we used basic plastic sheeting from Harbor Freight and that worked well for us. Be sure to cover all bottom cabinets, stoves, and dish washers, once the base coat is dry it is NOT coming off. Doing the decorative chip part was actually pretty fun. Moving as a pair it took less than 1 hour to paint and chip all of our counter space. Make sure when you put on the top coat, no kids or pets are in the area because hair and fingerprints will show in the top coat. Overall I would highly recommend this product. It was easy to use, and 1 month later we haven't had any chipping or bald spots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like brand new counter tops! This stuff is amazing. For those of us who can't afford to replace our counter tops, Rustoleum has brought a product that can make them practically brand new. We bought two kits and did our kitchen, both bathrooms, and a small counter in the hallway. Now all are matching and the old chipped mauve and yellow ones are like new. I have to say, this was pretty easy for what you get. It was messy. It was work. It was true DIY. But it wasn't hard at all. Anyone can do it. The hardest part for us was keeping the kids away for two days while it dried. Tip: make sure you really check everything after you've sanded the chips down. If there are spots that are bare or look pretty low, take the extra four hours and re-coat those spots. It's so worth it. I love the way our counter tops look and feel now. I'm proud to show off our home. P.S. The Desert Sand looks REALLY GOOD with white cabinets! So we painted those too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome job I was looking to update the small kitchen in an apartment I have for sale. Not being able to afford a countertop replacement, I looked for alternatives and Rustoleum's transformations kept popping up. I was a little hesitant but the price was a fraction of the cost of replacing....so with my bofriend's help I was able to get the project done in two days and it really made over the kitchen. I had white laminate countertops witha wood beveled edge and the product had no issue with either surface. Do be careful about oversanding the stones/chips down on the edges as it is a pain to fix and blend. We did use a sander with 80 grit paper to help sand teh countertops while the other person used the included equipment. We also used the sander with 120 grit and barely any pressure to the stones while the other person used the enclosed tools for the edges and hard to reach spots. We could have used the tools included but we thought the sander cut down on time. The results are great. I can't stop talking about the product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Eh, its ok. I managed to snag this kit for $50, so I figured why not! The sanding isnt too bad, the kit includes a nice sanding block and the diamond pad works very well too. The paint goes on nicely, hard to get it quite as thick as it really needs to be. it needs to be put on THICK. The "decorative chips" and the dispenser, BIGGEST FREAKING MESS EVER! No matter how much I taped off, I have chips in my cabinets, and then the dust from sanding the chips is really bad, but sanding really is key to getting the counter smooth and perfect. . It took longer to clean the mess up from the project than the project itself. The "clear coat" is really just a 2 part mix epoxy, so well see how well that really hold up. Overall the project looks alot better than my green countertops, but I dont think I would ever do this again, especially not for $240. For that cost and now knowing how big a pain the mess it. i would suggest it to someone for a quick cheap cover, but i wont do it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I requires effort but worth it! I have read the negative responses before I purchased this product and now understand why they had problems. First of all it requires elbow grease and attention to detail. It is important to follow the directions. I took more than 5 days to finish the kitchen. I sanded the countertop with 200 then 400 grit sandpaper first, then used the block sander included before the base coat was applied. I used painters tape and paper to cover the walls and cabinets. Don’t buy cheap brushes and rollers. They are expendable considering you are getting a new counter top at a fraction of the cost of granite. It’s important to scrape off as much of the chips as you can and thoroughly sand the surface before sealing. There was a spot that I didn’t scrap off a few chips and they came off after the base coat hardened but it was easy to correct. I left it a little rough and it has a slight texture, pretty cool. Turned out great!

LOVE THIS! we have had it for 8 years. the edges get beat a bit, but it is easy to touch up. All you need is your receipt. Then you contact rust-oleum with pictures of the damage and a copy of your receipt and they send you out a new kit. In our 8 years, we literally just had to do this once, and it was a month ago. Holds up well and takes a good beating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from looks great very messy My countertops were extremely outdated and I wanted a new look so I went out and priced new countertops and for the laminate ones that kinda looked like granite would have cost about $750 installed. I wasn't quite ready to spend that so when I came across this product I was a little skeptical paying $200 for this kit in case it didn't come out right. But I ended up taking the risk an it was well worth it. My countertops look great now and it really isn't that difficult or take much time to do. It is very messy keep in mind though, I made the mistake of not putting plastic down on the ground and the little decorative chips that you spread around get everywhere. I am very pleased with this product it saved me $550 doing it myself, although I do think it should be a little cheaper considering what you actually get in the box does not look like it should cost more than $100 so they make quite a profit on it.
