Questions & Answers

do I have to remove the sink?

Asked by: kgaia1
No, it's not necessary to remove the sink. Tape around it.

Before using Rust-Oleum® Countertop Transformations, how does the countertop have to be prepped?

Asked by: jz
Before starting, you do have to fill in any chips in the counter, or any gaps between the counter and backsplash, using an epoxy plumbers putty. Once it dries, you then sand all surfaces of the counter with the included diamond embedded sanding block, until the surfaces have fine scratches all over them. After vacuuming the surface and cleaning thoroughly, you are then ready to apply the adhesive and the color chips. It is actually very simple, but is messy.

Great question, David! You will want to make sure that the surface is clean, dry, and in good condition prior to using Rust-Oleum Countertop Transformations on your countertop! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

We had a fire and don't have much money for countertops. We were thinking of using this on top of counter's made of plywood. Will that work?

Asked by: becky
I think it would work, although I would make sure to sand the plywood thoroughly, fill in any dents with plumbers epoxy putty, and then seal with something like Kilz, before doing the sanding step. Sand just enough to score the Kilz layer. Keep in mind that the epoxy is definitely not a filler, so the edges of your counter will end up with a sharp 90 degree angle instead of a rounded edge like you would see on a counter top. I still think it would turn out OK as the finished product looks amazing.

LOVE THIS! we have had it for 8 years. the edges get beat a bit, but it is easy to touch up. All you need is your receipt. Then you contact rust-oleum with pictures of the damage and a copy of your receipt and they send you out a new kit. In our 8 years, we literally just had to do this once, and it was a month ago. Holds up well and takes a good beating.

PROS: Covered my dark red laminate counters CONS: Chips are very difficult to adhere to vertical surfaces and to get consistent look in corners. I had to use a beige caulk and touch-up quite a bit corners. Prepare to sand, then sand then sand again. It is a lot of sanding and the chip adhesion in very messy. I recommend removing your sink and then re-installing it. Getting adequate coverage around the sink was very hard. In hindsight, I wish I had just purchased new laminate, and went over the old laminate. The finished product does not look like real stone, it does look like it is an applied surface.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to apply. Some rough spots I think this is totally worth the money. It turned our green laminate counter-tops to a much more modern look for a great price. Granted I have only been using them for about three weeks and they have held up great. I hope they give me two years till we can get new ones! I recommend saving the extra top coat because there were some patches that thinned out a bit after it dried that I would have liked to reapply for more durability. I also I did a 32 Sq. Ft kitchen with a large kit ( supposed to cover 50) and used all of the base coat. So if you are on the fence with size I would buy an extra kit to make sure you have enough base coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great alternative to purchasing new countertops I bought this product to update my condo's kitchen countertops before selling. I did not want to spend a ton of money on new ones. I am so glad I did this instead. This was a really easy weekend project. If you are able to read directions, sand and paint-you can do this! The counters came out great. A tiny bit bumpy in spots (likely due to our not sanding enough before putting on the final stage, but it still looks great.) Please note-The final stage you paint on to seal the counter top is VERY stinky. Be sure to have kids and pets out of the house, and you will probably want to open some windows too.

You have to think this project completely, I am no rookie at home improvement but if you raise your sink, on plan on replacing it, DO it . Do not attempt to apply this product with out some overfill, especially behind the sink on the backsplash. Overall, we are very happy with the overall look. Do NOT come in contact with the surface for at least 4 days, we waited 3 days, and I could see a few scratch marks.

Very easy to use, a little messy when applying the paint chips, but the end result was fantastic. Plenty of chips and base coat left for additional counter tops. The only problem was that to order additional 2 part top coat, it is just as expensive as buying an additional entire kit. That needs to be addressed by Rust_Oleum. Definitely wort the money. Looks like stone.

Overall the countertops look better then the ones that are there, but we were a bit disappointed with the final product. The touch ups we did ended up making it look worse then if we were to leave the spots
