Questions & Answers

Does the cabinet surface need to be stripped (e.g., glossy paint, etc.) before applying this product?

Asked by: beginner2
Either way you still do a lot of scrubbing with the deglosser. You have to get rid of the shine on the existing finish or the paint won't adhere as well. With the amount of elbow grease you might as well use an orbital sander and sand it down. Probably easier and provides a better base for the paint. You just need to scrub the tight crevices afterwards.

Do I have to get the dark bond kit tinted somewhere? Mine is almost a clear color?

Asked by: Hortonsizefun
When you purchase this product, you get it tinted at the paint counter to the color you want. The colors available are listed on the box. Note: The colors shown on the box are slightly lighter.

Approximately how many cabinets will one kit cover?

Asked by: beginner
There is a formula you can use to find out how much this kit will cover. I bought the small kit & it did both of my (SMALL) bathrooms. In total, it covered 2 small vanities & their doors (6 doors total) as well as my overhead small storage cabinets + their doors (2 doors total). Hope this helps!

Can I use a cloth to wipe on the clear coat instead of brushing it?
Asked by: Gem
I wouldn't recommend using a cloth to wipe on the top coat because of consistency of product and recommendation not to over-brush. It dries quickly and this is the final sheen that will seal in the paint and protect all of your hard work. Don't skimp on the cost of the brush (you don't want to pick out "brush hair" during the entire process). When in doubt, contact Rustoleum's customer service 1 (877) 385-8155.

Not quite as easy as advertised however, you will still need to do some sanding and if you don’t prime over dark cabinets you will need 3-4 coats of Bond Coat if you are using the White Kit.

If you cut corners and don't have the patience for drying times, skip it. But if you do exactly what the instructions say, it will turn out beautiful. 2. 1st coat of the bond coat looks terrible. This is normal. Keep those layers thin and keep going! 3. Don't fear the glaze! It really makes it sing. 4. Have some Qtips on hand to blot any excess top coat out of the corners. It will dry white on you if you let it pool.

I refinished my bathroom cabinets in two weekends and they went from ugly, old out-of-date white melamine builder's grade cabinets to a rich, warm espresso that look amazing. The kit is easy to use and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Just ensure you allow enough time to let each step dry thoroughly and give yourself enough space to be able to lay out all the cabinet doors. I used soup cans from the pantry to elevate the doors so that I could easily paint the edges. I also suggest checking the doors and frames periodically while each step is drying so you can wipe up any drips that slowly appear, otherwise the drips will show when fully dried. I added modern hardware and my cabinets look completely brand new. I saved thousands of dollars in my bathroom remodel by not having to buy new cabinets. By the way, I'm not a professional painter or tradesman - just the homeowner. Check out the "before" photo and the end result. Truly a transformation. Thanks, Rust-Oleum!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from USE A SPRAYER! For the best professional look, you will need to use a sprayer (unless you plan to glaze) for bond and top coat. The top coat is very difficult to get a clean look without using a sprayer. I tried multiple times with a brush and it looked horrible. If you don't have a sprayer, go buy one. Your results will be night and day. If using a sprayer, you will not need to dilute. The instructions says up to 30%for bond and 10% for top coat. When I did that I found it to be too thin and had some runs. When I sprayed without any dilutions, it came out very nice Overall, a good product but it's very difficult to get a clean look without a sprayer. Good luck!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Labor of Love When we purchased our home we did a lot of DIY to save money. This product was very helpful in achieving our look on a budget. However, a few key points: 1) Follow the directions!!!! 2) Make sure you have a large enough staging area 3) Make sure you label the cabinet doors and corresponding cabinets 4) Make sure you thoroughly scrub the cabinets with the product provided. Some brown is starting to show thru, I repainted it while it was hanging so I'm ok with it. Just make sure you scrub the cabinets really well. Over all, this product has saved me thousands of dollars from having to install brand new cabinets. It is a good product.

I bought 2 of the "Pure White Cabinet Small kit" Because I wanted to paint my fake plastic wood laminate cabinets so they would be SMOOTH AND WHITE.... All this kit comes with is deglosser, 2 coats worth of primer, which you are told to BRUSH on, a BLACK GLOSS and water based polyurethane!!!! There is no way to ever get smooth WHITE cabinets if you brush on two coats of primer and put black antiquing gloss over it. You will get distressed/shabby chic streaked brown cabinets. COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY!!! If you want WHITE cabinets, buy deglosser, Zinzer Primer, White Satin Paint, and Water based Polyurethane and USE HIGH DENSITY FOAM ROLLERS, not a brush......

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Cabinets... I was told by multiple kitchen remolding contractors that you CANNOT paint these cabinets because it is made of Thermofoil, and it would cost me over $10k to replace it. I decided to remove two zeros from that amount ($10,000 :) $100) to buy Rust-oleum and I think I made 2nd best choice of my life (first was proposing my then GF and now wife) Either you can go spend thousands of $$ and replace all cabinets or simply pay less than $100 and paint it. I also had some questions and called customer support and they have one of the best customer support out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG!!!!! I LOVE THIS KIT!!! my awesomely fantastic mom and I did this in two weekends yes it was a lot more than what the video indicated but so worth every step. I did read the reviews before I started so I knew to add the water to step number 3 it really helped so that it wasn't so thick so it went on smoothly without any problems. I am so so so very pleased with the outcome that I have now started on all of the bathrooms in my house! I bought 3 kits, but really only needed one to do my entire kitchen and I have a lot of cabinets I took one bag and I'm keeping the other one to do the bathrooms. I keep going in there turning the light on off and saying "I did that!".

Deglossing does not really save much time over giving the surface a quick sanding. The base coat is difficult to apply; dries very quickly, not giving time to brush it on well before it starts to show brush strokes. Then the flat surface on a dark color shows fingerprints and where you brush of dust with a rag. Protective coat has the same issue with brush strokes. Needless to say it does not give a smooth look to the finished product. I switched to sanding and then using two coats of tinted polyurethane and they looked great and it seems to adhere just fine.

It's VERY time consuming but also very inexpensive in comparison to typical refinishing options. My minor complaints are, the proportions of each product seems a bit off, at least for our usage. And you can't order any part of the kit individually. We had to buy 5 kits (white, espresso, and gray) to do 3 bath rooms and a kitchen. This was mainly because we had to do multiple coats of the bond coat. We have SO much leftover of all the other products. 4.5 bottles of deglosser, 4 cans of glaze, 3.5 cans of top coat. Seems to be a bit of a waste not being able to order ONLY more bond coat when needed. Tips, take your time, make sure there are no runs onto the other side of which you are painting. For the top coat, don't go thick but be consistent. It dries fast, touch up is near impossible and if too thick when it dries it's a nice (or not) milky color and is quite the hassle.

The deglosser takes major elbow grease to work. It would have been easier to sand the cabinets. I was happy with my cabinets after the 3rd coat of paint provided (bond coat) in the kit, but the protective coat ruined the look of the cabinets. It didn't go on evenly and it was streaky. I had to go back to home depot and buy polyurethane to go over the cabinets. They look better now, but because it didn't look good it took my 3 times as long as it should have to finish this project. I regret purchasing. I wish I would have just bought paint and polyurethane and sanded the cabinets. It would have turned out nicer and it would have been half the price and way less time. I wouldn't buy this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love my "new" cabinets!!! This is a great product! It is very time consuming, but so worth it. My cabinets look better than I ever thought they would. The only problem I had was with the glaze. Since the glaze is "optional" I wanted to see the difference it would make. I put the glaze on one door and when I went to wipe it with the cheese cloth the base coat started to come off. The glaze did not make that much of a difference so I opted not to use the glaze and they look amazing! I bought one box and I did two full-size bathrooms and my laundry room and I still have a can of the base coat and about 3/4 of a can of the protective coat left so I will be doing my kitchen next - it does a lot.

I had older dark cabinets so took four coats of bond coating. Time consuming. Follow the instructions and the results will be very satisfying. Take your time. Took me three weeks. New hardware and kitchen looks like a $8000 job.. . Plenty of lint free towels, decorative gaze (which I didn't use), de-glosser and sealer. Only con's are not nearly enough green scouring pads, and not enough bond coat; (two 31.5 cans). Again, I had to use four coats while instructions called for two coats. Most other users needed more than two coats. Had to purchase a whole other case just for one more can of bond coat to which I used 2/3. Rustoleum should sell bond coat separately for case purchaser. Need extra let me know...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation I just bought this product after months of trying to find the right way to update my tired and worn out cabinets. The cabinets were originally an ugly pink color that after a year and a half had to go and now they are gorgeous! The cabinet transformation kit is perfect for the do it yourselfer who doesn't want to spend a lot of money or have a lot of time. It can be done in just a few days if you are like me who works full time and has a family to take care of. I just wish i would have had this product months ago. It would have saved me a lot of money and time. However i would recommend lightly sanding the surface with a 220 grit sandpaper before starting for a smoother finish.

We went with the lightest option available in the kit. Unfortunately, it really didn't get the look we were hoping to see for our cabinets. It ended up looking more like a wash and definitely not a finished product. We hadn't intended to use the glaze (and still didn't), but after 3 coats of the bond coat it still wasn't anywhere near what we were hoping for, so we ended up buying an ultra white latex paint to cover it. We'll see how that stands up since we are combining processes... I wouldn't tell people not to use the kit, but I'd definitely not recommend trying to go lighter on your cabinets. There was no way we could have put the top coat and been at all happy based on the way it looked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Results I had been waiting to paint my cabinets for awhile. I really wanted a white kitchen because mine is so small. I finally bought the Rustoleum Pure White Cabinet Kit after a lot of research. It took longer than I thought because there are a lot of coats that I needed to put on to cover the darker shade of brown I had for my cabinets. I'm not the greatest painter, so there are definitely some imperfections, but overall they turned out great. I would warn you that it will take longer than a weekend to do unless you have multiple people helping. Each step needs a few hours to dry and you have to do the inside and outside of the cabinets 2-4 times. I am very happy I bought this product and would recommend to anyone that wants to change the look of their cabinets.

We recently purchased a home and I hated the kitchen even though it was modern. The cabinets color was too dark and it made the kitchen look smaller. I considered changing the cabinets but didn't want to put in the money as I intend to expand the kitchen in a few years. And then I saw this and other products in the store. I read the reviews on this and the other products and opted out for this one even though it requires removing the doors and hardware. To be honest it was a lot more work than I bargained for. I expected it to be a one weekend job but it ended out been three weekends. I imagine it was longer because I did this by myself and I don't even know how to paint. Anyway, it was totally worth the time and effort. I have a fresher kitchen. Even though it is not the dream kitchen I no longer hate it. And all it took was this fresh paint. I totally recommend it. One thing to note is if you're going lighter from a darker color, it takes three coat to complete the job and there is not enough base bond to color that. So I did two coats in the inside doors and that was enough. Also it is recommended to use oil based paint first for older woods. I recommend you follow the instructions as I saw many reviews that mentioned that their cabinets turned blue, which is exactly what is stated on the box. Just don't make the same mistake I made and spill the paint on your car seat - it costs a lot to fix that :-).

I wanted to give my builders grade cabinets a facelift since purchasing new, for the kitchen and 3 bathrooms, would cost me some serious coin. I think the cabinets turned out very well with the linen color I went with. The only downside was the process was way too time consuming. This is not just a weekend project and the overall time it took me was about 2 straight weeks.

We purchased the dark tint with espresso as the finish. The finished product is great. My advice: watch the video that comes with the product, watch several YouTube videos, properly clean and de-gloss (recommend wearing a mask with de-gloss product), DONT use the decorative glaze (we tried on one cabinet and HATED it. The glaze made the color darker and streaky), high traffic areas apply two coats of protectant (final step). We also purchased a small kit of "White Fog" with the intent of painting our island a lighter, contrasting color than the cabinets - this color looks more gray/blue than a warm cream color - we painted over with espresso. Cleaned and spray painted the hinges a dark brown color to blend with the cabinets. After another $60 on knobs and handles we have beautiful, professional looking re-faced cabinets. Does not look like painted cabinets. Couldn't be happier.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Follow the instructions Even with a 3 star rating, I would recommend this product. All of the instructions need to be followed! Take your time prepping the area. The instructions state that you don't need to prime the surface and only 2 coats of the base coat are needed. I ended up priming everything and did 3-4 base coats. My cabinets were a medium shade of oak and in some areas, the oak shows through leaving a yellowish tint. I didn't do the glazing step, and was able to use a cabinet paint roller (look at the FAQ in the manual). Bottom line, we ended up spending $140 instead of paying $8,000 for new, white cabinets. After we get the counter tops and back splash installed, I'll update the pictures.

Refinished used kitchen cabinets for use in new construction pantry and laundry room. Chose because of no sanding. End result was excellent. Our contractor could not believe the finished cabinets were the originals. Used a wooden block with the scrub pad for even pressure for the deglossing step. Bonding and finish coats are self leveling. Glazed using the dab method to remove most of the glaze and a dry brush to remove extra glaze from the crevasses and to soften the overall surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this product!! I was hesitant about changing the color of my oak cabinets, but this product is WONDERFUL!! Since my cabinets were older I did do some light sanding & sprayed them with Kilz primer prior to putting the bond coat on. I also put 2 coats of Top Coat on! The finish is AWESOME!! They look just like the finish on new cabinets! Cabinet clean up is so easy because of the hard finish this creates. I definitely recommend this product! I loved the kitchen so much I even did my bathroom cabinets!! I just wish Rust-Oleum would sell individual cans of the Bond Coat & the Top Coat! LOVE THIS PRODUCT!

They were a light oak. I painted the top a cream and the bottom a coffee color. The finishes have lasted. Yes, it was a lot of work to degloss the cabinets. One customer wrote that the deglosser is like liquid sandpaper. She is right. The key is to use a lot of green scrubbies to degloss. I bought an extra pack of six, cut them in half and used all twelve. If you take off all the shine, the top coat does stay put. I have five sons - teenagers to twenties. They are rough on everything. My cabinets have dents in them, but the paint stays on. For $150 we got what looks like a brand new kitchen. I still get compliments on it. This is a very good product, you just have to be willing to put in the elbow work - and it takes a lot of elbow work!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for golden oak cabinettes!!! I read all the directions, did all the kitchen cabinets, put everything up and as I was breaking down the boxes there is a note on one side that there is a separate process for light (golden oak) cabinets. This should have been in the directions! After about 9 months the light oak stain came through. I think it looks ok as a 'patina' but my wife disagrees so I am starting all over again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money and time! After reading a blog on Home Depot about repainting cabinets, I was sold on this product (blog article was sponsored by Rust Oleum) and I wanted to go this route to turn my honey oak kitchen cabinets into white. The white has taken 4 coats in order to cover the cabinet color, when the instructions call for only 2! I have had to purchase 3 additional kits just so I can use the stage 2 base coat to appropriately cover my cabinets. By the way, there is no paint that is sold separately, I have to buy the entire kit just to get the base coat again! That’s about $35/30 oz can. That blog article is misleading and I bet that RustOleum used 5-6 base coats to get their white to look that good. If I could give any word of advice, just buy a sander, your own quality thick paint, and finish. This is such a waste of money that I wish I had just done my cabinets the old fashioned way.

I had paid a man to paint first time, second I had to do myself. Major tips!!! Keep Box and cans full or empty until at least a year, this way Incase you have an issue like mine you can call the company and they will send you paint to redo if you tell them how displeased you are. They will want the numbers on the cans to prove you have pitched a kit, in my case I purchased to. They were very helpful and sent me all the paint I needed. This is BIG TIP you need to use Bulls Eye 123 first rust oleum told me it said to do this in the instructions? So I redid all of mine and so far look so much better. What a nightmare. The product is very good but if I had had done the bulls eye I would not had to redo. Good luck to all!
