Questions & Answers

Does the cabinet surface need to be stripped (e.g., glossy paint, etc.) before applying this product?

Asked by: beginner2
The deglosser that comes with the kit is probably sufficient in most cases. Our cabinets were painted 2-3 times (poorly as well), so we opted to sand them down to be thorough. If you're curious, you can see the process we went through and the finished product here: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHHmc9JHy88">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHHmc9JHy88</a>.

Do I have to get the dark bond kit tinted somewhere? Mine is almost a clear color?

Asked by: Hortonsizefun
When you purchase this product, you get it tinted at the paint counter to the color you want. The colors available are listed on the box. Note: The colors shown on the box are slightly lighter.

Approximately how many cabinets will one kit cover?

Asked by: beginner
There is a formula you can use to find out how much this kit will cover. I bought the small kit & it did both of my (SMALL) bathrooms. In total, it covered 2 small vanities & their doors (6 doors total) as well as my overhead small storage cabinets + their doors (2 doors total). Hope this helps!

Does this work on painted cabinets. All of the examples seem to be stained and you can still see the wood grain. Our cabinets are already painted.

Asked by: Clueless
Yes. Step one of the process is a deglazing agent applied with a green scouring pad.( included). This step prepairs the surface for step 2. The bonding coat .(the coulor) Just make sure the paint is sound and not flaking off. Step 3 the glazing finish allows you to add a grain effect to the cabinets. step 4 the finishing coat. Gives a nice satin finish to the cabinets. Watch some videos on you tube. I found them very helpful. Good luck.

We recently purchased a home and I hated the kitchen even though it was modern. The cabinets color was too dark and it made the kitchen look smaller. I considered changing the cabinets but didn't want to put in the money as I intend to expand the kitchen in a few years. And then I saw this and other products in the store. I read the reviews on this and the other products and opted out for this one even though it requires removing the doors and hardware. To be honest it was a lot more work than I bargained for. I expected it to be a one weekend job but it ended out been three weekends. I imagine it was longer because I did this by myself and I don't even know how to paint. Anyway, it was totally worth the time and effort. I have a fresher kitchen. Even though it is not the dream kitchen I no longer hate it. And all it took was this fresh paint. I totally recommend it. One thing to note is if you're going lighter from a darker color, it takes three coat to complete the job and there is not enough base bond to color that. So I did two coats in the inside doors and that was enough. Also it is recommended to use oil based paint first for older woods. I recommend you follow the instructions as I saw many reviews that mentioned that their cabinets turned blue, which is exactly what is stated on the box. Just don't make the same mistake I made and spill the paint on your car seat - it costs a lot to fix that :-).

We purchased the dark tint with espresso as the finish. The finished product is great. My advice: watch the video that comes with the product, watch several YouTube videos, properly clean and de-gloss (recommend wearing a mask with de-gloss product), DONT use the decorative glaze (we tried on one cabinet and HATED it. The glaze made the color darker and streaky), high traffic areas apply two coats of protectant (final step). We also purchased a small kit of "White Fog" with the intent of painting our island a lighter, contrasting color than the cabinets - this color looks more gray/blue than a warm cream color - we painted over with espresso. Cleaned and spray painted the hinges a dark brown color to blend with the cabinets. After another $60 on knobs and handles we have beautiful, professional looking re-faced cabinets. Does not look like painted cabinets. Couldn't be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Cabinets... I was told by multiple kitchen remolding contractors that you CANNOT paint these cabinets because it is made of Thermofoil, and it would cost me over $10k to replace it. I decided to remove two zeros from that amount ($10,000 :) $100) to buy Rust-oleum and I think I made 2nd best choice of my life (first was proposing my then GF and now wife) Either you can go spend thousands of $$ and replace all cabinets or simply pay less than $100 and paint it. I also had some questions and called customer support and they have one of the best customer support out there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Labor of Love When we purchased our home we did a lot of DIY to save money. This product was very helpful in achieving our look on a budget. However, a few key points: 1) Follow the directions!!!! 2) Make sure you have a large enough staging area 3) Make sure you label the cabinet doors and corresponding cabinets 4) Make sure you thoroughly scrub the cabinets with the product provided. Some brown is starting to show thru, I repainted it while it was hanging so I'm ok with it. Just make sure you scrub the cabinets really well. Over all, this product has saved me thousands of dollars from having to install brand new cabinets. It is a good product.

The bond coat was much too thin and after applying three coats the cabinets still looked terrible. I had to change tactics mid project. I knew this project would be a lot of work, but having to do a third coat and then do everything over with a different product has made it a nightmare.

We loved this kit and used it to completely change our orangey oak cabinets in one weekend! We used 3 coats and did not do the decorative glaze. The only other thing we would recommend is priming before the bond coat. We saw a little of the orange glaze show through in spots after we were done sealing.

Make no bones about it, this is the easiest, least costly, and most effective refinishing product for cabinets ever. I had about 130 sq ft to do, so I bought two kits (200 sq ft) but I never had to open the second kit. They provide plenty of product with the kits. I still have over a half of a quart of the base coat, and over half a quart of the finish topcoat left over from the first kit. Plus half the roll of gauze they provide. Application is easy enough, if you can use a paintbrush, you can do this. But be warned this is a very time consuming project. You must go by the instructions...to the letter. They have reasons for this. Some tips: Scrub hard! Get all the grime off. DO NOT shake the cans, use the sticks, you will get air bubbles in the base and the topcoat, but especially the topcoat. Use a foam brush for the glaze, the glaze goes a very long way. Only apply light coats of the base. (2) The coverage is amazing. Lastly, adhere to the dry times strictly. This is what makes the project so time costly, but it is very important. If you stick to their instructions and dry times, you will be very pleased with the end results. I am very happy I chose this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG!!!!! I LOVE THIS KIT!!! my awesomely fantastic mom and I did this in two weekends yes it was a lot more than what the video indicated but so worth every step. I did read the reviews before I started so I knew to add the water to step number 3 it really helped so that it wasn't so thick so it went on smoothly without any problems. I am so so so very pleased with the outcome that I have now started on all of the bathrooms in my house! I bought 3 kits, but really only needed one to do my entire kitchen and I have a lot of cabinets I took one bag and I'm keeping the other one to do the bathrooms. I keep going in there turning the light on off and saying "I did that!".

For one, the color is not accurate to what you are shown on the box. Secondly, brush strokes do not level out. They tell you to use a bristle type brush, but I was left with brush marks. They're satisfaction guarantee is a hassle to get your money back. I have been emailing after an initial phone call for over 2 weeks without a response. Will have to call then again after the weekend. Do yourself a favor, buy a paint designed for wood and trim. I used Sherwin Williams Cashmere. Watch a few youtube videos using the brush and roller technique and you'll get the job done for a little over half the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oak to white cabinets I had oak cabinets in my kitchen and it was too 1990s for my taste. So I bought this kit and I'm VERY happy with how they look now. This was a huge project and took about 6 days to complete. So be prepared to eat a lot of takeout. My kitchen has 22 cabinets and 12 drawers so I ordered two kits. I do have about half a can of bond coat left over which is good for touch-ups in the future. Also, my cabinets required 3 coats as opposed to the 2 that are recommended by the manufacturers. I did not use the top coat as some online forums have said that the top coat can give the white cabinets a little yellow tinge if you painted over oak.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Results I had been waiting to paint my cabinets for awhile. I really wanted a white kitchen because mine is so small. I finally bought the Rustoleum Pure White Cabinet Kit after a lot of research. It took longer than I thought because there are a lot of coats that I needed to put on to cover the darker shade of brown I had for my cabinets. I'm not the greatest painter, so there are definitely some imperfections, but overall they turned out great. I would warn you that it will take longer than a weekend to do unless you have multiple people helping. Each step needs a few hours to dry and you have to do the inside and outside of the cabinets 2-4 times. I am very happy I bought this product and would recommend to anyone that wants to change the look of their cabinets.

This white/light version was nothing like the dark version. This kit the base coat was more like a thick old latex paint, not thin like a stain as in the dark tinted kit. The base coat went on too thick, dried too fast, left terrible brush strokes, was not able to see wood grain through it. i would have saved myself alot of time and money had i just slapped on latex house paint rather than use this kit and i would have gotten the same poor results. But as i said, the same kit in the dark tint came out beautifully. Would not recommend this light tint kit at all.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for golden oak cabinettes!!! I read all the directions, did all the kitchen cabinets, put everything up and as I was breaking down the boxes there is a note on one side that there is a separate process for light (golden oak) cabinets. This should have been in the directions! After about 9 months the light oak stain came through. I think it looks ok as a 'patina' but my wife disagrees so I am starting all over again.

Very simple and logical process, just follow the instructions. The included dvd might have been helpful but I don’t have a DVD player anymore. I would suggest that Rustoleum provide a video clip or a u tube video. All in all, it was a 4 day project, allowing each coat of finish to dry adequately, plus it’s better to only complete 1 step at a time, each day. Best not to rush. Each coat/step is quite involved. Simple process but does require lots of patience and lots of arm work. Extremely pleased with the process and completion of my project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this product!! I was hesitant about changing the color of my oak cabinets, but this product is WONDERFUL!! Since my cabinets were older I did do some light sanding & sprayed them with Kilz primer prior to putting the bond coat on. I also put 2 coats of Top Coat on! The finish is AWESOME!! They look just like the finish on new cabinets! Cabinet clean up is so easy because of the hard finish this creates. I definitely recommend this product! I loved the kitchen so much I even did my bathroom cabinets!! I just wish Rust-Oleum would sell individual cans of the Bond Coat & the Top Coat! LOVE THIS PRODUCT!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great! After reading other people's reviews and suggestions. I agree with getting a good quality brush. I got the short handle trim paint brush from home depot. Loved it. Get about 4-6 2" foam brushes for touch ups and to help smooth out where the paint puddles. The instructional DVD was very helpful. Allow each coat to thoroughly dry. That's very important. It sets better inside or make sure your garage is heated. We had to wait longer for the drying process since it's winter and very cold in our garage. Overall, it looks amazing. We went from the boring honey oak color to the espresso color. Just very time consuming. More than a weekend project.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from WOW!!! This is the product that FINALLY made our kitchen Pop! Our 1990's kitchen seemed outdated several years ago. We added Granite Countertops. Still looked dated. Then we added a ceramic tile backslash. Still seemed old. Then we dropped $5,500 on stainless steel appliances. We still Did Not have the kitchen we wanted. We had toyed with the idea of having the cabinets replaced or even refaced. Way too much money - thousands of dollars quoted. Then we saw this product online. We drove to our local Home Depot and purchased a kit for $74.00. The project took an entire weekend and then a couple days you wrap up the finishing touches. My wife and I did the entire project ourselves. The directions were very straight forward and easy to follow. We had 19 doors, 9 drawers and the cabinets they went to, to paint. We ended up buying a total of three kits because we could NOT purchase the bonding agent (Paint) separately. We ran low and had to buy full kit to get another 1/2 can of paint. They call the paint a bonding agent rather than paint. We spent an additional $133 for door and drawer pulls and $125 for painting supplies, brushes, pans, rags, tape and 40 painting points to place the doors on while painting them. The results were AWESOME!! It made every penny we spent prior to painting the cabinets finally pay off!! You can see the results in the pictures. I have included a BEFORE of the ORIGINAL kitchen - then a BEFORE after Granite and stainless appliances were added - and then an AFTER Picture showing the FINISHED Project with the newly painted cabinets. I highly recommend this for anyone that can paint, and has good serviceable but dated cabinets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well and easy to use My fifty year old cabinets look brand new. The clear coat was flaking off so I had to sand all the surfaces and then I wiped them down with acetone. Never used the deglosser. I used a foam roller for the first coat of Cocoa colored bond coat and feathered it out with the brush, goes on faster that way, when it dried I did the same with the second coat. I tried the glaze on a small section and did not see where it made much difference on the dark color so I did not use it. I brushed on the clear top coat without any problems, I did not thin it with water. put it on thin and keep that brush moving. After doing the small kitchen pictured, I still had almost a full quart of bond coat left.

One thing lacking is a warning that you MUST get the product tinted at your local HD for it to work properly, we assumed that White meant White, but it still requires tinting. We ended up purchasing two kits as the bond coat without tinting didn't cover with two coats and required a third coat. I contacted Rust-Oleum and they were very helpful. At the end of the project we were thrilled with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from few more tips I used the light kit tinted Linen but did not use the included light glaze but instead used the Java glaze that comes with the dark kit. The light kit glaze has an orangish hue that I did not like. I applied glaze all over then wiped with a damp rag to remove most except in grooves and corners then wiped with a dry rag until I got the antiquied look I wanted but with very little glaze left on flat surfaces. Just enough to give a sheer tint in those areas without leaving streaks. Then I went back with a fine brush in the grooves to add more glaze where needed and then feathered it in those areas to look natural. If you dont like the results, immediately wipe down with a wet rag before it dries and try again. After allowing glaze to dry for 24 hours, i went back with the side of a sponge brush and outlined the cabinet doors and drawers to really make them pop. On the island I used the dark kit tinted chocolate with the included glaze. You can buy quart cans of the Java glaze at HD also if you need more. I wound up needing two light kits and one dark kit for my project since I did 3 coats of bonding coat.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Follow the instructions Even with a 3 star rating, I would recommend this product. All of the instructions need to be followed! Take your time prepping the area. The instructions state that you don't need to prime the surface and only 2 coats of the base coat are needed. I ended up priming everything and did 3-4 base coats. My cabinets were a medium shade of oak and in some areas, the oak shows through leaving a yellowish tint. I didn't do the glazing step, and was able to use a cabinet paint roller (look at the FAQ in the manual). Bottom line, we ended up spending $140 instead of paying $8,000 for new, white cabinets. After we get the counter tops and back splash installed, I'll update the pictures.

When others said it was time consuming this is no joke. Rustoleum did a great job with packaging and instructions. I had received a pro painter quote of $3,000, however think that could be beat. I'm writing this review while waiting on doors to dry. The time consumption is mainly drying time. Unless you have a large convenient room to set up your paint tables, etc. you will only be able to work with 3-4 doors at a time. 4 days later I have finished 3 doors and corresponding frames plus deglossing 2 more doors and painted one coat of one side of 3 doors. It's all good. Today is 9-11-17, should be finished in 2-3 weeks,HOPEFULLY! What else does a 69 yr. old retiree have to do?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love my "new" cabinets!!! This is a great product! It is very time consuming, but so worth it. My cabinets look better than I ever thought they would. The only problem I had was with the glaze. Since the glaze is "optional" I wanted to see the difference it would make. I put the glaze on one door and when I went to wipe it with the cheese cloth the base coat started to come off. The glaze did not make that much of a difference so I opted not to use the glaze and they look amazing! I bought one box and I did two full-size bathrooms and my laundry room and I still have a can of the base coat and about 3/4 of a can of the protective coat left so I will be doing my kitchen next - it does a lot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard Work, Time Consuming but Very Pleased with Results We are moving and selling our home so we decided to freshen up the kitchen cabinets. They are originally the builder grade Honey Oak color and we chose Linen. I did a lot of research and here are a few tips from my experience. The only regrets I have are that I didn't do this sooner, and in cooler weather! 1. Practice first - I had a few extra cabinet pieces that I practiced on. I highly recommend trying it on scrap wood first, to figure out how the paint goes on, brushstrokes, etc. 2. The deglosser works, but after deglossing 4 cabinet doors, my right shoulder and elbow are permanently sore. I went back to HD and bought an orbital sander-does the same thing with less work. 3. Unless you're looking for a rustic, country-style finish, do not use the color glaze. I tried it on a practice piece and the glaze made it look dirty. The Linen color by itself is fresh and clean. I skipped the glaze and went directly to the top coat. 4. I read that many had issues with the top coat included in the kit, so again, I used it on a practice piece. As long as you don't glop it on or let it build up in the corners, you will not have any issues.

Although I didn't get the CD for this, I was able to watch the steps on youtube. I also was able to watch others transformations on you tube as well. My kids and I transformed the cabinets on a long weekend. We are pleased with the outcome of the product and although it was a little labor intensive it was well worth it. I have suggested this product to several people and would help them if asked. As you can see by the photo I still have lots to do to the kitchen BUT the cabinets look great! My advise is to watch several videos, follow the instructions and enjoy your beautiful cabinets once completed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation I just bought this product after months of trying to find the right way to update my tired and worn out cabinets. The cabinets were originally an ugly pink color that after a year and a half had to go and now they are gorgeous! The cabinet transformation kit is perfect for the do it yourselfer who doesn't want to spend a lot of money or have a lot of time. It can be done in just a few days if you are like me who works full time and has a family to take care of. I just wish i would have had this product months ago. It would have saved me a lot of money and time. However i would recommend lightly sanding the surface with a 220 grit sandpaper before starting for a smoother finish.

My kitchen needed an upgrade but I didn't have the money to rip everything out so I looked into ways to give it new look without breaking the bank. One of the clerks in the paint department suggested this product so I thought what the heck. I was never very fond of the painted cabinet look so I was a little skeptical going into the project but I'm glad I did because for few hundred bucks, elbow grease and a bit of imagination and my kitchen looks awesome. We used this product to prep and paint the cabinets in white. I got the idea to use wainscoat/beadboard to use as inserts for the doors to give them a whole new bungalow style look. I then used an old set of utensils to create new door and drawer pulls. The kit was easy to use and for the money, you just can't beat it.

There were two problems. First, I had to buy two kits--I have about 70 sq ft of cabinets and the paint came nowhere close to covering them with two coats. Second, the protective gloss turns white cabinets yellowish and is extremely difficult to paint uniformly. I was careful and put a ton of time into it and the gloss ruined the whole thing. Now I'm sanding them down and just painting them with premium paint and hoping for the best.

They advertise "no sanding" cabinet restore system. Unfortunately, the deglosser does not just take the old finish off like butter the way their tutorial video demonstrates. I left it on for 2 hours and used a scrapper because the old finish doesn't just wipe off like they advertise. I even ended up using a power sander on some of the cabinets to take the old finish off. Base coat: The base coat is about as thin as water. It will require 3-4 coats of this product to get any kind of coverage. TIP: The instructions say to brush it on. Do NOT brush it on. Just spray it on. You'll get a more even coat. Overall, extremely disappointing, got my hopes up, and made me do more back breaking work than I was originally intending on.
