Questions & Answers

Does the cabinet surface need to be stripped (e.g., glossy paint, etc.) before applying this product?

Asked by: beginner2
Either way you still do a lot of scrubbing with the deglosser. You have to get rid of the shine on the existing finish or the paint won't adhere as well. With the amount of elbow grease you might as well use an orbital sander and sand it down. Probably easier and provides a better base for the paint. You just need to scrub the tight crevices afterwards.

Can I use a cloth to wipe on the clear coat instead of brushing it?
Asked by: Gem
No. Because a cloth sucks up product, you will not get enough on what you are painting. A brush does the best job.

Do I have to get the dark bond kit tinted somewhere? Mine is almost a clear color?

Asked by: Hortonsizefun
When you purchase this product, you get it tinted at the paint counter to the color you want. The colors available are listed on the box. Note: The colors shown on the box are slightly lighter.

My husband and I did our whole kitchen in 2 days. He did most of it. The degreaser (I think that is what it's called) in this kit was amazing. Although I keep my house very clean and wash down my cabinets about once a month and dust them weekly, you wouldn't believe what get's on them. This degreaser took them down to clean. When we started painting we realized how good the paint covered. Also we did 2 coats front and back. We started out with those basic oak cabinets most newer houses have. We chose this in the LINEN color. A little off white. Not yellow, but not pure white, but a beautiful linen color. We bought 2 kits, but ended up with 1 left, so hubby brought it back unopened. So with 1 kit we did 22 doors and drawer faces, front and back, 2 coats. So 4 coats per door. 2 on the front and 2 on the back. I'll post pics if I can.

I will say it is A LOT of work and very time consuming. I'm nearing the end and am so tired of painting. Although the finished product looks really good. Take your time! We decided to use a small foam roller on the doors and large cabinet areas even though directions say 2 inch brush. We didn't use the glaze and could see some brush marks. The top coat is super runny so be sure to keep a look out for pooling & drips. I just brushed away lightly when they appeared. This is a great DIY product. Very happy with results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well worth the time and money After reading reviews and watching YouTube videos we decided to go ahead and give it a shot. We wanted to redo our ktchen without spending a ton of money. We redid our backsplash and painted before doing our cabinets. We went with the PURE WHITE. Everyone has their own style but what worked for me was the following: First I took a rag with soap and water and cleaned every cabinet. After drying with clean rag I used the de glosser that came with kit. Works very well on removing dirt and grease marks. Next I let sit for an hr. (Only negative about this kit is its very time consuming) next I used a 2" brush and painted along sides and corners making sure there was no build up. Some comments I saw left yellow tint so I made sure to do this part carefully. After I used brush I went with a small roller. Took roughly 3 coats. Final coat for protective coating I used a brush. Very pleased with results so far, however I did have to go back and purchase a second kit as you will run out of paint.

I refinished my bathroom cabinets in two weekends and they went from ugly, old out-of-date white melamine builder's grade cabinets to a rich, warm espresso that look amazing. The kit is easy to use and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Just ensure you allow enough time to let each step dry thoroughly and give yourself enough space to be able to lay out all the cabinet doors. I used soup cans from the pantry to elevate the doors so that I could easily paint the edges. I also suggest checking the doors and frames periodically while each step is drying so you can wipe up any drips that slowly appear, otherwise the drips will show when fully dried. I added modern hardware and my cabinets look completely brand new. I saved thousands of dollars in my bathroom remodel by not having to buy new cabinets. By the way, I'm not a professional painter or tradesman - just the homeowner. Check out the "before" photo and the end result. Truly a transformation. Thanks, Rust-Oleum!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product delivered exactly what it promised! I am very pleased with the outcome of my cabinet restoration. It was a lot of hard work, but if you follow the directions exactly and take your time, the results are fantastic! I did the white glazed effect on my 18 year old white cabinets and I cannot believe the difference. They are beautiful. My only "constructive" comment: It takes 2 people longer than a weekend for a standard sized kitchen. I have 29 cabinets and drawers (combined), and it took us 4 straight days of hard work to complete (and I am not counting taking everything out of the cabinets, putting doors back on and putting everything back into the cabinets). But again, the results are well worth it. Don't skimp on the "de-glossing" stage. We scrubbed every area for at least 2-3 minutes, and I think this makes the difference. Just take your time and don't rush. For the $69 (on sale) I spent on the kit and maybe another $100 in random supplies, I have new cabinets that look professionally done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Results! I repainted my light wood color kitchen cabinets with this product and I was so impressed and pleased with the results. The prep work - cleaning and deglossing - did take a while but I think it made the end result better. And a word of advice - you need lots of surface area to work and lay out the cabinets. I did about two coats on each side plus I did the decorative glaze. My 10x10 kitchen ended up taking me about 7 days to do since I allowed for 24 hours of drying between each coat. - it was a lot of work (did it on my own) but I felt like I had a brand new kitchen when I was done - and for UNDER $100. Unreal! A note about the glaze: this really enhanced the look of my cabinets. It did take a bit of trial and error to get the look and color right but it added some warmth and dimension. I also liked that it disguised a dirty spot or two. :) Oh and I recommend googling some cabinet painting tutorials - learned some good tips and tricks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy, Great Results, Takes Time To Do It Right I am not so sure that the type of paint would have actually made a difference, as I am pretty sure that the deglosser was the key to get the excellent results. I decided to go with the Rustoleum system because I trust the brand, they took the time to actually come up with a process, and the benefit vs. cost was extremely favorable. We had old oak laminate cabinets, doors and drawers. A total of 22 pieces plus the cabinet frames. I completed the job in about 2.5 days of steady work, but had saw horses and plywood boards in almost every room so I could cycle through the steps without a lot of down time. The deglossing is critical. I did use 3 coats of bonding paint on highly visible areas and also used 2 coats of the polyurthethane coating. The kit (small kit) gives you plenty of product. I have enough left over to do a couple of dressers. You will not be disappointed with this product. It is water-based so clean-up is a breeze.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A lot of work, but worth it in the end! My 1985 oak cabinets were looking pretty sad, and after updating my countertops with Rustoleum Transformations, I decided to go for glory and do the cabinets too. I had right at 100 sq ft of cabinetry. I was concerned I might be running out of product towards the end, but there was way more than enough. It was a ton of work. I estimated it would take maybe a week...it took two. Scrubbing with the deglosser to prep the wood for painting is not any easier than sanding. Then it's two coats of paint and one protective top coat. The protective top coat could definitely be improved. It is difficult to work with because it is white, not clear. Any buildup in the corners shows. Also, it dries very quickly and anytime you go over an area that has already started to dry, it shows. That being said, I love the final product. I chose Cabernet, and it is just beautiful. (The pictures do not do the color justice at all. It is much more cherry than it appears.) The finished product is definitely worth all the work that went into it.
