Questions & Answers

Does the cabinet surface need to be stripped (e.g., glossy paint, etc.) before applying this product?

Asked by: beginner2
Either way you still do a lot of scrubbing with the deglosser. You have to get rid of the shine on the existing finish or the paint won't adhere as well. With the amount of elbow grease you might as well use an orbital sander and sand it down. Probably easier and provides a better base for the paint. You just need to scrub the tight crevices afterwards.

Can I use a cloth to wipe on the clear coat instead of brushing it?

Can I use a cloth to wipe on the clear coat instead of brushing it?
Asked by: Gem
No. Because a cloth sucks up product, you will not get enough on what you are painting. A brush does the best job.

Do I have to get the dark bond kit tinted somewhere? Mine is almost a clear color?

Asked by: Hortonsizefun
When you purchase this product, you get it tinted at the paint counter to the color you want. The colors available are listed on the box. Note: The colors shown on the box are slightly lighter.

I went in with the idea that this was a good product and regardless of how time consuming it was that my cabinets would look good. Big time wrong. Even with going along with the directions my cabinets are a loss. I got as far as painting them and all was good until I added the protective top coat that the manufacture specifically says will not yellow. Guess what? It yellowed. I would say that after all the hard work and time that by the last part of it I would be home free, you would think it would turn out good. Nope. Guess what I have all the time in the world and patience to start all over again, good one. I'm at a loss here. Bought two kits. Now I have 32 cabinet doors that look like a small dog (Rust-Oleum)came in and urinated on them. At this point all I can do is put them up and be reminded every single day what a complete waste of my time this product was. Thanks Rust-Oleum you changed the look and style of my cabinets. They look like the way your product really is.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well worth the time and money After reading reviews and watching YouTube videos we decided to go ahead and give it a shot. We wanted to redo our ktchen without spending a ton of money. We redid our backsplash and painted before doing our cabinets. We went with the PURE WHITE. Everyone has their own style but what worked for me was the following: First I took a rag with soap and water and cleaned every cabinet. After drying with clean rag I used the de glosser that came with kit. Works very well on removing dirt and grease marks. Next I let sit for an hr. (Only negative about this kit is its very time consuming) next I used a 2" brush and painted along sides and corners making sure there was no build up. Some comments I saw left yellow tint so I made sure to do this part carefully. After I used brush I went with a small roller. Took roughly 3 coats. Final coat for protective coating I used a brush. Very pleased with results so far, however I did have to go back and purchase a second kit as you will run out of paint.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Could have been good, but wasn't. Was very excited about this product after hearing good things from a friend. I read the manual and watched the video before getting started. I was impressed that no primer or sanding was meant to be needed. After scrubbing my cabinets with steel wool and Dawn. I used the deglossing solution with the scrubbing sponges as directed. The first coat of white went on and had me slightly worried. The paint seemed thin. I did the second coat a few hours later. Long story short, 4 coats later you can still faintly see the dark cabinets through. The only place that mentioned needing primer was tiny text on the outside of the box and even then it said in rare cases dark oak cabinets might need primer. Personally, I think that should be included in the manual and video. The other issue I have is the top coat looks yellow an hour after application. Hopefully, it goes away or doesn't get worse. I was careful not to make it thick and there are no drips it's just a horrible yellow hue.

I refinished my bathroom cabinets in two weekends and they went from ugly, old out-of-date white melamine builder's grade cabinets to a rich, warm espresso that look amazing. The kit is easy to use and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Just ensure you allow enough time to let each step dry thoroughly and give yourself enough space to be able to lay out all the cabinet doors. I used soup cans from the pantry to elevate the doors so that I could easily paint the edges. I also suggest checking the doors and frames periodically while each step is drying so you can wipe up any drips that slowly appear, otherwise the drips will show when fully dried. I added modern hardware and my cabinets look completely brand new. I saved thousands of dollars in my bathroom remodel by not having to buy new cabinets. By the way, I'm not a professional painter or tradesman - just the homeowner. Check out the "before" photo and the end result. Truly a transformation. Thanks, Rust-Oleum!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kitchen Cabinet Magic I was so skeptical, and a bit afraid too when I started the cabinet transformations process using this product. Going from darker brown cabinets to white was doubtful. Well, I did it! This product works just as directed when you follow instructions. In my pictures, one can see how beautiful the kitchen cabinets are now. There are a few recommendations: in my opinion, do not use the top coat. It has a hazey tint that takes away from the white. I used it and they still look good, yet if I could do them again I’d try a different top coat. Also, if you’re painting the inside cabinets, use something different. I used a linen white for my uppers and simply restained my inside bottoms. I deglossed and sanded the insides before painting them. I wanted the paint to really take hold. I used the kit for my outside cabinets and doors. By the way, it’s worth mentioning I removed the old doors and ordered new ones, cut to fit. I wanted a new look. My original wood cabinets were structurally perfect so, why replace them? Didn’t make sense to me. Overall, this system is a five even if the top coat isn’t used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked well for me! Bought the kit to update our very tired ranch kitchen in our rental. Bottom cabinets were original from the '50's and very old and worn. Upper cabinets had been replaced but didn't match bottoms and the doors were so smudged the varnish was worn to the wood. I chose biscotti to try to get close to the woodwork on the windows and door and somewhat match the floor. It took a couple hours a day over a week to get it done. I deglossed (sanded some rough pieces) and painted. WIthout the glaze it had a bit of a modern european look and I worried that as some reported - that the glaze just made it look dirty. Tried it on one drawer and liked it so stuck with the plan and did it all. You honestly have to look closely to see that it is NOT wood grain. It looks much better in person than in the photos. With a new coat of paint on the walls - it was a total makeover for about $90. LOVE IT. The kitchen is small but I have a LOT of all the materials left. Don't know how it will wear but can touch up when I need to.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A lot of work, but worth it in the end! My 1985 oak cabinets were looking pretty sad, and after updating my countertops with Rustoleum Transformations, I decided to go for glory and do the cabinets too. I had right at 100 sq ft of cabinetry. I was concerned I might be running out of product towards the end, but there was way more than enough. It was a ton of work. I estimated it would take maybe a week...it took two. Scrubbing with the deglosser to prep the wood for painting is not any easier than sanding. Then it's two coats of paint and one protective top coat. The protective top coat could definitely be improved. It is difficult to work with because it is white, not clear. Any buildup in the corners shows. Also, it dries very quickly and anytime you go over an area that has already started to dry, it shows. That being said, I love the final product. I chose Cabernet, and it is just beautiful. (The pictures do not do the color justice at all. It is much more cherry than it appears.) The finished product is definitely worth all the work that went into it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product delivered exactly what it promised! I am very pleased with the outcome of my cabinet restoration. It was a lot of hard work, but if you follow the directions exactly and take your time, the results are fantastic! I did the white glazed effect on my 18 year old white cabinets and I cannot believe the difference. They are beautiful. My only "constructive" comment: It takes 2 people longer than a weekend for a standard sized kitchen. I have 29 cabinets and drawers (combined), and it took us 4 straight days of hard work to complete (and I am not counting taking everything out of the cabinets, putting doors back on and putting everything back into the cabinets). But again, the results are well worth it. Don't skimp on the "de-glossing" stage. We scrubbed every area for at least 2-3 minutes, and I think this makes the difference. Just take your time and don't rush. For the $69 (on sale) I spent on the kit and maybe another $100 in random supplies, I have new cabinets that look professionally done.
