I'm looking to use this product to re-paint an old set of Hex metal dumbbells. They aren't rusty since they've been stored indoors. However, they're over 20 years old so there are a fair amount of flaky chips and thus the reason I'd like to re-paint. Some say clean them off with water, dry them and paint them with this product. Others say more work is needed such as cleaning with water, using a wire brush and lightly sanding with 400 grit sandpaper, washing again, drying and then using this spray paint. I'd like my effort to last but the easier way is awfully appealing by comparison. :) What process would Rustoleum recommend for this metal surface in this condition?

I just washed down all my items only to get surface dust and nicotine off, but didn't do anything special, except taping off the motor of the fan.

Hi Buck, thank you for reaching out! Yes, our Rust-Oleum Universal Hammered Paint and Primer in One Spray may be applied directly to plastic surfaces, and cures to a very hard, durable finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

I bought 4 cans to do a 2 can job only because of past experience with rustl-oleum and only being to get about HALF the paint out of can. Followed all directions exactly and it did not disappoint it did exactly as I thought. When going back to give second coat with better than half the can left it WOULD NOT spray. Only that they were the only ones I knew that made this hammered paint to match something I would have bought another brand. I have since found out that someone else does make this type of paint. The numbers on the cans are as follows, 049622, 043223. 081161. 27481 color antique pewter. purchased in home depot in feb. Maybe you need two agitator balls as I thought my arm was going to fall of from shaking with only one ball. Will be returning what is left to home depot see how you stand behind you satisfaction guarantee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought the Rust-Oleum Dark Bronze Spray paint in attempt... I bought the Rust-Oleum Dark Bronze Spray paint in attempt to repaint my outdated and weathered Brass-like front door push plates, outside light fixtures, door knobs for a small closet and door security chain. We purchased the Kwikset Powerbolt Venetian Bronze Electric Deadbolt and Handle so I was trying to match that color. The Dark Bronze wasn't dark enough, so I went to the local Home Depot and purchased the Burnished Amber. I sanded down all surfaces (to include decorative nuts) and first applied a flat black for a primer and then finished with the Burnished Amber. This process took many applications and drying time, but I am extremely pleased with the results. To keep from having several clumps of paint spray on a piece when first pressing the spray trigger, I would start spraying before it came in contact with anything and then slowly fan the spray back and forth over the pieces I had secured to cardboard. I wish I could add more than one picture to show the results. I choose to show the picture with the door handle and lock since the push plate is what I painted to match the lock and handle. (The push plate was originally the Brass look. The outside plate was extremely rough looking due to the weather.)

It was old and had layers of rust. I brushed on a good coat of Kilz High Adhesion, let it dry for a couple of days and then sprayed on Rust-Oleum Universal Forged Hammered Antique Pewter Spray Paint. It went on so easy. The trigger button was easy to press and it had a nice wide spray. I can probably get the project done in one coat, but will apply 2, for good measure. The antique pewter is better than expected. It is more of a metallic charcoal color. I really didn't want anything too bright. The hammered texture helps minimize the surface imperfections. I love the way my kitchen step stool came out.

I went with this clear as HD did not have the color I wanted in the hammered finish. I sprayed my base color coat and followed all directions. The result is a blotchy hit-and-miss effect. The places where the clear coat laid down properly, is far from the desired "hammered" effect. It's like a cross between satin and orange peel if that makes any sense. Will have to sand smooth and try something else. I gave it two stars because it did dry quickly and the fumes were not terrible. Will not buy again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from First let me say that Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X is great spray paint. I use it all the time. ... First let me say that Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X is great spray paint. I use it all the time. That said Rust-Oleum Universal with the trigger spray nozzle is unreliable. The cans have a red trigger guard which they have added to prevent accidental spray during shipment. There is no cap. The small plastic trigger guard piece fits tight. You are suppose to slide it around the front of the trigger allowing the nozzle to function. Beware. It will stick and if you pull the whole trigger and nozzle assembly from the head unit you will never get it back on. I recommend throwing it away or returning the can for refund. If you attempt to just push it back onto the can it will open the valve in the can long before it mates again with the tube at the top of the valve. The paint is immediately runs down the side of the can into your hand. In the worst case, the nozzle assembly will get stuck with the valve open and your wife will not like the color of your face and hair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I’ve been using this paint on 3/4” Black Malleable Iron... I’ve been using this paint on 3/4” Black Malleable Iron Pipe and it’s perfect for this. If its really greasy, I wipe it with TSP first and if the pipe is in good shape, the this paint goes right onto it and looks great. If its badly dinged up pipe, then a quick shot of primer 1st makes this perfect

Keep the can and surface being painted each at consistent temperatures and stay the same distance away for a consistent texture. In other words, sun makes a difference on can and surface.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from NOT a good color This is not a good dark bronze color, it’s almost silver. Don’t buy it if you expect it to match anything else with an “antique bronze” finish. I ended up just buying brown, that’s a much better match. Hammered texture is also too subtle, don’t expect your results to look like the cap shows.
