About This Product

RUTLAND Furnace Cement is premixed and ready to use, making it one of the easiest cements to apply. Fix a crack, seal the collar to the top of a wood stove, or seal between firebricks and prefabricated fireplace. Use this cement anywhere a quality high-temperature adhesive is required for furnaces, firebrick repair, filling gaps, sealing joints, or gluing ceramic logs. Can this product be heat cured with a propane torch?
ByDec 17, 2023

Answer This Question

Hi Ted63, thanks for your interest in Rutland Black Furnace Cement. We do not recommend using a propane torch or heat gun to perform a heat-cure - it brings the area to temperature too quickly and can trap moisture inside of the application. You should start at a lower temperature, approximately 230-degrees F, and slowly bring it to 500-degrees F - once you hit 500-F then you need to keep it there for one full hour. I want to use this to repair some cracks around the damper in my chimney. (getting chimney smell downdraft into the house in the summer). Do I have to light a fire in the chimney to get it to cure? can I use it now and cure later in the winter?

You will need to slowly bring the product to 500 degrees F and maintain that temperature for a full hour to fully cure the cement. Here is a video that walks you through the heat-cure process: https://youtu.be/9kDHsm0YYHk

The back, of the inside, of the fireplace is crumbling around the bottom. Behind the mortar(concrete) is metal with a space in between and the sides are metal. Can i use this with maybe a mesh backing? Any suggestions?

              Answer This Question

Yes, as long as you are able to perform a heat-cure, you should be able use the Furnace Cement to seal between metal and masonry surfaces.

              By|Jan 26, 2021

As long as the Metal Mesh has a very high melt point (Dont use aluminum, steel would be best) Should work fine.

Had a large chip in my green egg cooker and it successfully repaired that defect.

Product was put on per instructions. After the first fire it started to Bubble. After a couple more fires unfortunately the bubble burst open. It was not a good experience and now I really don't know what to do with this situation. Product did not work as stated. I am now afraid to use my fireplace. A waste of money that I really didn't have to spend to fix a small problem which is now a huge problem.
