Questions & Answers

What's the difference between this Ryobi Miter Saw Stand and the $99 Ryobi one also listed on the Home Depot website (Model # A18MS01G)?

Asked by: Potluck
1. $59.97 vs. $99.97 2. 300 lb holding capacity vs. 400 lb holding capacity 3. 7' extension vs. 9' extension 4. The cheaper one is NOT COMPATIBLE with any SLIDING miter saw that is greater than 10" whereas the expensive one at least works with Ryobi's 12" sliding miter saw. Per the manual for the $99.97 one, "...it should never be used on any miter saw with a blade diameter larger than 12 in. or with any slide miter saw with a blade diameter larger than 10 in. other than 12 in. Ryobi brands." The $59.97 one completely leaves out the "...other than 12 in. Ryobi brands" part in the manual.

Only saw needed?

I am a beginner. If I bought this saw, could I use it for all my DIY projects, or would I also need a table saw? (I already have a circular saw). Thanks!
Asked by: Laura
I am not a carpenter, but I love my ryobi tools. For me a table saw is a dangerous tool not to mention a nightmare to use. YouTube can show you how to use a skill saw instead of a table saw. Ever tried to cut a sheet of plywood with a table saw? Not fun.

What are the amps for this saw?

The product details specify both 15 and 13 amps, which one is correct?
Asked by: Cake
The sliding saw is 15 amps. The compound saw is 13 amps.

This is a great saw at a great price, but it does have one significant flaw. They’ve opted for a tension based work clamp. It didn’t seem like a big deal at first but it is. Example: I have 8 identical cuts to make. With a normal locked down clamp, I make the cut, loosen the clamp half a turn, move the board, half turn back down, cut again. However with a tension based clamp it’s just going to collapse and you’ve got to mess with it after every cut. Second problem, because of the design of the base, you can’t really use any other sort of clamp. There isn’t a flat surface on the top or bottom to solidly clamp down with. Third, it’s a bit dangerous to use a sliding miter saw without a clamp. With non-sliding, I’d just use my hand to hold the wood, but with sliding you really can’t do that, especially not safely. Overall this clamp design really holds back an otherwise excellent saw.

Just got it set up - surprised by reviews that said it didn't need any adjusting as I had to adjust the fence and square the blade to the table. It took me a long time to set up because this is my first miter saw and I was going slow making sure to read the instructions. I am a weekend DIYer/beginner woodworker and this seems like it will fit my needs perfectly. I swapped out the blade for a 60 tooth diablo. Cuts very nicely. I downgraded one star because it seems like all the screws/bolts strip easily. The first saw I had, one of the bolts to adjust the fence were stripped so I had to return it. Second one is fine, but I was a lot more careful (FYI I am a woman, not a big burly man). For a power tool it seemed like I needed to be way too careful with it. Overall for $129 (for just the saw) this was a great deal and I'm looking forward to making a bunch of projects now! Stand is also very solid. Glad I got it because the saw is deep since it's a sliding miter and I don't have a big workbench.

Therefore, it is good enough, and the price I paid was stupid-low (on sale for $129). If I had paid $500 for it, I would have returned it. The problem is that the fence is not square to the blade. You can loosen 4 bolts that hold the fence to adjust it, but it will not adjust far enough to be square as it is still a degree or so out of square. Plus, the 4 bolts are hex-head and are already stripping with one loosen-tighten cycle. The 45 detent is also off by a degree, too. It has a way to fine tune it, but it requires time, patience, and a bunch of test cuts. It isn't a set-it-and-forget-it saw. I'm only going to use it for crown molding once, so I can live with it. Others say they didn't like the laser, but it was dead-on for me. It is a great chop saw at a great price. But as a precision miter saw, meh.

As with almost all factory saws, I upgraded the blade right away. The good: cuts straight, sets up easy. The bad: the plastic parts have broken over time and normal use, due to flying pieces of wood from cuts, or normal use. I suspect that ones from the big yellow or orange lines would hold up better. Great for a hobbiest, I'd invest in a more robust solution were I a professional

This is my second purchase of this product, the first one was badly damaged when it was rammed by an out of control automobile in my garage. The saw took the brunt of the impact since it was hard mounted to my work bench. Believe it or not, the workbench survived virtually unharmed while my saw took it on the chin, right at the end of the saw slide. I think that saw would still be usable except for the fact that the mounting frame broke and is bent badly along with the locking mechanism on the end of the slide. So, I'm keeping that one for spare parts. I was very happy with the first one, just need to learn how to back my car into the garage more carefully...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value I debated a lot over this saw. I’m a semi professional wood worker and we’ll know the quality of my work is directly related to the tools I use. Unless you need the capacity to justify a 12 inch size you can buy this without hesitation. The laser guide isn’t especially accurate but if you need one then best take up another profession. I own a lot of Ryobi tools, they are all excellent and always priced very fairly. Unless you are a carpenter and will be making thousands of cuts a week don’t waste your money just for a better known brand name. 5 stars plus.
