Can I use it to remove stain from a wooden fence?

Asked by: TjLuis
Nope. Can't remove stain unless you remove like an 1/8" of wood.

Can I use it to sand drywall and if so do the pads work that come with it or do I need to buy other ones?

Asked by: Steve
Sanding drywall is what killed mine, dust got into the bottom bearing and it seized. The motor would spin up but it stalled as soon as the paper touched the wall. I would hook a shop vac to the back end if sanding drywall to keep the dust out of the sander.

What does 'random' mean in 'random orbital sander'?

What does 'random' mean in 'random orbital sander'?
Asked by: steelhead
Random orbit simultaneously spins the sanding disk and moves it in small ellipses. As long as you keep the sander moving, even a little, it will prevent swirl marks in the wood. you also do not have to pay attention to the direction of the grain.

2.6 Amp Corded 5 in. Random Orbital Sander is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 410.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Value! Reliable, Low Vibe. I bought this sander to replace my failing Craftsman orbital. At first glance, they were both similar in shape and size. They both come from the same manufacturer. Since Ryobi offers a better warranty, its easier to find Home Depot stores, and the price was better, I went with the Ryobi 5in. orbital sander with the hook and loop system. It is low vibration, and extremely quiet in comparison. Owning a vibe sander and a belt sander as well, this is my jack of all trades sander and I use it for wood, metal, paint, walls, etc. Don't expect the dust catch to work miracles, but expect a reliable sander that's comfortable to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed This was the first time I have ever used a random orbit sander, and I will say on first impression, I am very impressed! it is easy to use and I purchased it yesterday for a project that involved prepping cedar boards for staining, and this thing made quick work of the project. I will find other uses for this tool in the future, and i feel that it was a good purchase at it sale price of $30. Only negative, which is likely true of all sanders, is that I wish the dust collector had caught more of the dust, but it seemed to catch the majority of it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bought it today and I am impressed, although it is the first orbital sander I have ever used. We... Bought it today and I am impressed, although it is the first orbital sander I have ever used. We stripped all the finish off of a solid pine coffee table using the 80 grit paper. Then used the 120 grit paper I bought, and finally 150 grit. It did a wonderful job and the table is ready for the staining process. What I also like are the pads are held by an integrated valcro system which surprisingly works well. I hope it lasts a long time since a few reviewers stated their's were malfunctioning after a period of time. For the price, I think its a good buy at 40 bucks. Also, it comes with one 80 grit, one 120 grit and one 220 grit sand paper to attach.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money First time buying a Ryobi product. I was in the need of a new sander for a kitchen table project, the sander was a good price so I thought I'd give it a try. Worked good first time I used it, only sanded for about 30 mins. The next time I used the sander it began to vibrate violently and was hard to control, this happened after just 10 mins of sanding. I believe it lost a bearing. I wish I would have just spent the extra $30 and went with a better sander, now I have this piece of junk and have to go buy another sander. My advice is spend the extra money and go with something better. I don't plan on buying Ryobi products again in the future either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Priced Sander Not a top of the line but in my opinion best bang for the buck. I purchased this about a month ago to help with a kitchen remodel. I used the sander to sand maple cabinet doors I had made to glass smooth before painting and also used it to sand a 10' Beech butcher-block countertop. I had it continuously running except for pad changes for a good hour+ with no problem and was very happy with the results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not purchase On May 19 tried to return to tilly mill store. Lots of vibration suddenly started after 2 months of light use. Reviews show that you must take pad off and tighter one screw. After doing this I decided that I did not want this sander. The Ryobi rep refused to take return while recognizing that my complaint was valid. I have Ryobi planer, 2 drills, 3 bit sets, 2 disc sanders, 1 belt sander, router bit set and table saw(died recently). No more. You have a problem with a product and will do nothing about it and you must read customer reviews to discover it. I gave the product to Home Depot.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 sanders in three years. maybe a better home owner tool I bought one of these three years ago to use as work, my job had me using it not every day but maybe every week. on the first sander the bottom plate became loose a little at a time so that by the time I noticed and took it apart the screw was stripped out and couldn't be re screwed. (this also happened to a co-worker of mine) Home depot replaced it. the second sander the motor burnt out. the third sander is a DeWalt. this one functioned alright for the beginning of it's life, and might work fine for a homeowner but any one reading this should probably spend the extra $20 and buy the Dewalt. (more power and a better dust bag).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent for light use I bought this sander about six months ago. I've used it on quite a few jobs already (prepping a few rooms for paint, removing some grout, sanding part my deck). It's easy to operate and does a good job. I gave this sander only three stars because I've only owned it for 6 months and already had to replace it. Durability is questionable but maybe I was asking too much out of a $40 sander? Very possible. Anyway, I bought the variable speed DeWalt. I'm hoping for more longevity. Again, I think the to Ryobi does a good job overall for the money but probably more suited for light use and low demand.
