In the year 2017, it is insulting that ryobi chose to use lead acid batteries instead of long lasting, safe, lithium phosphates(lifepo4).( 3 year life vs 10+ years.) I would have paid $800 more for lithium. Heck i even used lithium on my last ebike, why cant $ryobi$?
Asked by: Justin
This mower is intended for homeowners who may use it 20-40 times per year. If properly maintained (kept charged) the SLAs should last at least 5 years, possibly 8+. SLA are typically given ~300 cycles before no good. This lifespan fits really well for the mower. The lithium would have added a lot more to the price for essentially no benefit to the homeowner consumer. I run an all electric mowing business, and have been working with all types of batteries for years. I wish Ryobi would come out with a ~32" walk behind battery mower. That is the gap that needs filling now. I will have my eye out for a used one of these 38" tractors, perhaps with a neglected battery. With a good lithium battery it could have potential for me. Even just the mower deck I'd love to have. But at $2500, sure beats the $9-12,000 MeanGreens.

With nothing to synchronize the blades (separate motors) how do they overlap without hitting? Do they not overlap? If so, how does it not leave a seem of uncut grass down the middle of each pass?
Asked by: John
no mower has synchronized blades, gas mower's blades are ran from a v-belt, not a timing belt

Yes they do. I broke a wheel when I bumped into a cement block. Cement beat plastic. If you ever need parts, this is the email I received. Hi, I bought my RM480e two weeks ago, used it twice and love it. However, the parking brake on my unit does not work. The brake itself works fine but not the parking handle. It probably needs an adjustment. Where are the instructions for adjusting the parking brake?
Asked by: Lloyd
You really have to fully depress the brake pedal then lift the parking lever. Its on a cable that goes to the rear brakes. There is a nut adjustment, but id be careful as tightening that too much will cause the brakes to rub and wear out.

The uncrating was about 60 mins and assembly 30 mins, It climbs hills with ease. It does pick up speed fast downhill. The overall cost per year is less than Gas including replacing the 4 deep cycle lead acid batteries after 5 to 7 years.( lithium batteries would be too expensive and the lead batteries add necessary weight to the machine).. There is a small design flaw. The Plastic grass deflector sticks out way to far. I broke mine backing up by a tree. The good news is Ryobi is sending me a free replacement. This says alot about a company supporting a new product !

It takes a bit of learning: cruise control is definitely the "gear" to use, as it will hold speed for you on the level or uphill. However, if you head downhill, and it starts coasting faster, it will keep speeding up unless you put your foot on the brake. That unsets the cruise, and you must use the accelerator pedal to resume speed. I have found I like to turn on the mower blades during backup as well. One problem I have had keeps me from giving it five stars: the lever to set mowing height is super-easy to knock out of its detent, and falls to a very short mowing height. I ended up making a small tapered wood block to keep it in the setting I want to use for mowing. The fact that it wants to be left plugged to the charger is good. I just mounted the charger to the wall of my barn where I park the mower. The mower uses lead-acid batteries, which keep the price competitive with the nicer gasoline mowers. I mow half an acre, and never see the charge meter go lower than three-fourths.

No Exhaust. Tight Turns. Comfy Seat. Easy maintenance. Cleans up easy with my leaf blower. Battery has yet to drop even one bar on the 100Ah version, even after mowing for 1+ hours. Blades are easy to raise and lower. Daughter likes to mow because it looks like a go cart. Cruise Control. Cons: No Suspension, very heavy. Because all of the weight is on the rear tires, every bump is amplified. Not a deal breaker, but this mower can mow much faster than the bumps allow me to. Delayed start / Gas pedal takes some getting used to.

Product was easily to assemble and guidelines about safety and operation were excellent. The mower runs good, cuts good, and batteries lasted on our 1 acre lot with room to spare. The only problem we had was on the 2nd time using the mower the front tire got a puncture from a dried out weed. We were able to fix the tire with a tire patching kit. It would be nice if the tires were a little more durable. Also, mower steering wheel has started to squeak on turning the 2nd time we used it. Overall we would recommend this mower for its durability, strength and ease of operation.

Quiet, plenty of power, decent cut quality. It is a rough ride though and you feel every bump in the lawn, due to narrow tires and stiff suspension. Really wish this had a zero turn option or at least a tighter radius, and a wider deck. The deck is no wider than the wheelbase so it's tough to get up next to or over top of landscape edging without actually driving over it, which makes for a lot of extra weed trimming. There is definitely some lag in the accelerator. Switching between forward and reverse takes some getting used to. Must be completely stopped before trying to accelerate again. Backup (and seat) alarm is loud and annoying. For example, you can't leave the mower on to use the lights, even with parking brake engaged, without the seat alarm beeping. The brakes are just ok, really have to ride them hard down steep hills; no auto-brake or "engine-assist". Overall great new product and I'm sure there will be more electric rider options in the near future but for now I don't think this mower is worth this price tag compared to other gas riders in this class. Oh and can't they just integrate the large charger on board so all you have to do is plug a cord in?

Just got the Ryobi Electric Riding mower and tested it on my yard...as well as the yard of my neighbors who are out of town. On the positive side, it is quiet, although it's not silent especially while the blades are in operation. I still wear ear plugs as has long been my practice, but I could possibly get by without them. On the negative side, the cruise control works fine on level ground or uphill, but on downhill sections there is no speed control and it will coast as fast as the slope will take you. Not an insurmountable problem, but when you apply the brake the cruise control disengages and you have to reset it. Not an insurmountable issue, but it is an issue where an improvement could be made. Also, this thing is heavy because of the lead-acid battery. This saves a lot of money over a lithium battery, and it isn't an issue at this time of year, but I am concerned about creating ruts in the yard if the ground was moist. Again, not an insurmountable problem, but an area for future improvement. A good to know point is that the battery charger gets pretty warm when in use. Best to keep it away from anything that is heat sensitive, and I wouldn't hide it away in a cabinet. Otherwise, my initial impression is pretty positive. It seems to cut as well as any other an other rider and is pretty maneuverable. It doesn't offer the same control or anti-scalp capability as a push mower, but then again you are sitting comfortably so that is a definite plus.

And I had someone mowing it every week and charging me $65/week. I was not ready to deal with gas mowers and the added maintenance that usually comes with a gas mower. So when I saw this 100% electric mower with a 24 month 0% APR offer for new credit card costumers, it was a no-brainer. It works as advertised. It looks good, works great and the battery lasts even if I decide to mow the entire lawn in one go. However, I have seen that if I push the deck adjustment lever to higher than mid point, at some point it had dropped down to the mid point. I am not sure there is something wrong. And applying the parking brake was interesting, but I get it now. All in all, I like my new toy.

My property is on a slope and not exactly level and you feel the bumps. The run-time is amazing, I have almost 1 acre and when finished it's still above 90%.
